AIM: To explore community service workers' experiences of grief to identify ways of providing more tailored, meaningful, and equitable supports. DESIGN: A community-based participatory action research methodology, informed by equity perspectives, was employed. SETTING/PARTICIP…

Traumatic loss: Mental health consequences and implications for treatment and prevention.

Traumatic loss involves the loss of loved ones in the context of potentially traumatizing circumstances and is a commonly reported traumatic event. It may give rise to disturbed grief, called prolonged grief disorder (PGD) in ICD-11 and persistent complex bereavement disorder (PCBD) in DSM-5, combined with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. The recent inclusion of grief disorders in both DSM-5 and ICD-11 have spurred research on grief-related psychopathology. This special issue on traumatic loss includes 10 articles and two letters. Topics addressed include diagnostic criteri…

Effect of a structured follow-up visit to a midwife on women with early miscarriage: a randomized study.

BACKGROUND: Women's grief after miscarriage is substantial and important. Women who experience early miscarriage do not constitute a homogenous group. The aim of this study is to measure whether a structured follow-up visit to a midwife (group 1) at 21-28 days after early miscarriage could reduce the women's grief, measured using the perinatal grief scale Swedish short version (PGS) after a further 3 months (i.e. 4 months after the miscarriage), compared to a regular follow-up visit to a midwife (group 2). METHODS: We performed an open randomized study of women who experienced early miscarria…

Perceptions of Crime Severity and Stigma Toward Family Members Grieving the Loss of a Person to Incarceration.

Family members of incarcerated persons may experience grief related to the incarceration. We examined laypeople's perceptions of family members grieving the loss of an individual to incarceration. Participants (N = 1,095) were randomized to read vignettes that varied by grief trajectory (prolonged vs. resilient), race (Black vs. White vs. Latine), and crime type (violent vs. non-violent). Participants answered questions assessing grief response appropriateness, comfort providing support to the grieving person, beliefs that the grieving person should seek therapy, and how severe they believed t…

The impact of anencephaly on parents: A mixed-methods study.

This study used a convergent parallel mixed-method design to explore the impact of an anencephalic pregnancy on parents. Twenty women and four men between 18-59 years old participated. Interview transcripts were analyzed using interpretive phenomenology and synthesized with Perinatal Grief Intensity Scale scores using a Pearson's correlation. Overall, 75% of parents scored intense grief. Qualitative patterns included overwhelming trauma, patient-centeredness as critical, stigmatizing perinatal loss, embracing personhood, and reframing reality. Control over care was associated with decreased gr…

Why Do Bereaved Partners Experience Interfering Rumination?: Evidence for Deficits in Cognitive Inhibition.

Recurring rumination is strongly associated with grief reactions severity. The authors investigated whether deficits in cognitive inhibition were related to such a dysfunctional process. Inhibition was examined among 61 low- or high-ruminating bereaved partners in a negative affective priming task with grief-related negative and positive words. Results revealed impaired inhibition for grief-related information in comparison with negative and positive information in bereaved individuals with elevated rumination. When accounting for differences in grief reactions, the present findings did not ho…

Outcomes from the Resources for Enhancing Alzheimer's Caregiver Health (REACH) program for bereaved caregivers.

Although preventive efforts for bereaved individuals have not been shown to be particularly effective in past studies, it has been suggested that intervention effects might be underestimated due to methodological issues such as short follow-up assessments. Thus, the present study aimed to assess the efficacy (as whole intervention packages and as component parts) of the Resources for Enhancing Alzheimer's Caregiver Health (REACH) interventions in preventing complicated grief, normal grief, and depressive symptoms at a longer term follow-up assessment among bereaved caregivers (N = 224). On ave…

Parenting the Forgotten Mourners. Caring for Siblings Amidst a Family Life Marked by Child Loss to Cancer.

The aim of the paper was to examine the experiences of bereaved parents when parenting a bereaved sibling following the loss of a child to cancer in Switzerland. For this secondary analysis, we interviewed 19 bereaved parents who together had 25 surviving siblings. Reflexive thematic analysis revealed that many parents recognized that their grief could have a negative impact on their surviving children. They expressed uncertainty and sometimes regret about their changed approach to parenting. They sought support from healthcare professionals and schools, but encountered barriers, particularly …

Competitive neurocognitive processes following bereavement.

Bereavement is a common human experience that often involves significant impacts on psychological, emotional and even cognitive functioning. Though various psychological theories have been proposed to conceptualize the grief process, our current understanding of the underlying neurocognitive mechanisms of grief is limited. The present paper proposes a neurocognitive model to understand phenomena in typical grief, which links loss-related reactions to underlying learning and executive processes. We posit that the competitive relationship between the basal ganglia (BG) and circuitry involving th…

Grieving after early pregnancy loss--a common reality.

A miscarriage can be very traumatic for a couple and their immediate family. The aim of this study was to assess, using the Perinatal Grief Scale (PGS), whether the type of early pregnancy loss influences the severity of grief and whether the presence of living children influences the severity of grief. Over a period of 6 months in 2008, seventy five patients were recruited for the study, of which 7 (9.3%) had molar pregnancies, 20 (26.7%) had ectopic pregnancies, 43 (573%) had a miscarriage and 5 (6.7%) had recurrent miscarriages. In this study there was no significant difference in severity …

Sleep disturbances in bereavement: A systematic review.

Severe, persistent and disabling grief occurs among a sizable minority experiencing bereavement, with diagnostic manuals newly including complicated grief (CG) disorders. Sleep disturbances/disorders have been established as worsening affective and stress-related conditions. However, the role of sleep difficulties in bereavement and CG has not received similar scientific attention. We therefore conducted a systematic review with narrative syntheses on this topic to clarify the role of sleep in bereavement (PROSPERO: CRD42018093145). We searched PubMed, Web of Science and PsychInfo for peer-rev…

An international perspective on bereavement related concepts.

This paper reports on part of a study which was aimed at assessing the views of leading researchers, theorists or clinicians working in the field of bereavement on key issues including, as reported here, concepts of different forms of grief as well as favoured theoretical orientations. Of a range of conceptual models the most favoured, by a large margin, were attachment theory and the psychodynamic model. The views of the "experts" were canvassed with respect to the use of seven selected terms used to denote some variant of the grieving process. There was, on the part of the respondents, reaso…
