[Driving mechanisms and research challenges of phytoplankton community structure shifts in the coastal China seas.].

The coastal China seas are a representative marine region jointly influenced by global climate change and human activities. As primary producers in marine ecosystems, phytoplankton community structure strongly influences ecosystem stability. Here, we summarized the spatiotemporal patterns, driving mechanisms, and modeling approaches of phytoplankton community structure shifts in the coastal China seas. Phytoplankton communities exhi-bit pronounced regional heterogeneity. In nearshore waters, eutrophication and changing nutrient regimes have generally weakened diatom dominance and increased the

Helminth infection dynamics in rehabilitating Javan slow lorises are driven by time since deworming rather than host traits.

Wildlife rehabilitation plays a central role in the conservation of threatened primates, yet parasite dynamics during captivity are rarely reported, particularly in relation to release readiness. We investigated gastrointestinal helminth infection patterns in rehabilitating Javan slow lorises (Nycticebus javanicus), a Critically Endangered species heavily impacted by the illegal wildlife trade. Using repeated fecal sampling (147 samples from 19 adults) and Bayesian mixed-effects models, we examined parasite richness, Shannon diversity, infection probability, and egg-shedding intensity in relat

Unveiling the dynamic effects of major depressive disorder and its rTMS interventions through energy landscape analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Brain dynamics offer a more direct insight into brain function than network structure, providing a profound understanding of dysregulation and control mechanisms within intricate brain systems. This study investigates the dynamics of functional brain networks in major depressive disorder (MDD) patients to decipher the mechanisms underlying brain dysfunction during depression and assess the impact of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) intervention. METHODS: We employed energy landscape analysis of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data to examine the d

Effects of selective strengthening of tibialis posterior and stretching of iliopsoas on navicular drop, dynamic balance, and lower limb muscle activity in pronated feet: A randomized clinical trial.

Objectives: Flexibility and strength are compromised in pronated feet, which could in turn lead to alteration of the dynamic balance and muscle activity in the lower extremities. This study aimed to analyze the effects of selective tibialis posterior strengthening and iliopsoas stretching on navicular drop, dynamic balance, and lower limb muscle activity in young adults with pronated feet. Methods: Twenty-eight participants with pronated feet were randomly assigned to either the stretching and strengthening group (n = 14) or the conventional exercise group (n = 14). The stretching and strength

A preliminary study on the measurement of static and dynamic motion at the glenohumeral joint.

Measurement of glenohumeral joint motion has, for the most part, been performed with the simple goniometer. The purpose of this paper is to describe a method for measuring and recording static and dynamic external rotation of the glenohumeral joint using the Cybex II Isokinetic Dynamometer and an MFE model 815 X-Y plotter. Static range of motion was assessed at 60 deg/sec using a slow arm action externally from a 90 degree abduction position. Dynamic motion was recorded at 300 deg/sec using a rapid rotational whipping action from a 90 degree abducted position. Measurements were recorded on thr

Fixed and dynamic equinus in cerebral palsy: evaluation of ankle function after multilevel surgery.

Multilevel surgery for gait improvement was performed on 29 ambulatory children with diplegic cerebral palsy. Patients were divided into two groups based on the presence of dynamic equinus (12 cases) and fixed equinus deformity (17 cases). Dynamic equinus deformities were not corrected surgically, and fixed deformities were corrected by intramuscular gastrosoleus lengthening. Ankle function was evaluated by clinical examination and gait analysis before surgery and a minimum of 3 years after surgery. Positive changes in ankle function were observed in both the groups. Conservative management of

Altered temporal dynamics of prefrontal ERP responses reflecting neural adaptation in patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment.

BACKGROUND: With increasing life expectancy, age-related cognitive disorders including mild cognitive impairment (MCI) represent major public health challenges, and amnestic MCI (aMCI) has the greatest risk of progression to dementia due to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Event-related potentials (ERPs), particularly the P200 component, have been studied as potential biomarkers, but conventional grand-averaged approaches often yield inconsistent results. This study examined the temporal dynamics of prefrontal ERPs in a large cohort of older adults to assess neural adaptation processes associated wit

Immediate Effect of Balance Taping Using Kinesiology Tape on Dynamic and Static Balance after Ankle Muscle Fatigue.

The objective of this study was to investigate whether ankle balance taping (ABT) applied after muscle fatigue-inducing exercise can cause immediate improvements in dynamic and static balance. A total of 31 adults (16 males and 15 females) met the inclusion criteria. The experiment was designed using a single-blinded, randomized controlled trial. Changes in static and dynamic balance were measured before and after inducing muscle fatigue in the ankles and after ABT or ankle placebo taping (APT). After ankle muscle fatigue-inducing exercise, both the ABT and APT groups showed significant increa

Temporal dynamics of direct reciprocal and indirect effects in a host-parasite network.

1. Temporal variation in the direct and indirect influence that hosts and parasites exert on each other is still poorly understood. However, variation in species' influence due to species and interactions turnover can have important consequences for host community dynamics and/or for parasite transmission dynamics, and eventually for the risk of zoonotic diseases. 2. We used data on a network of small mammals and their ectoparasites surveyed over 6 years to test hypotheses exploring (i) the temporal variability in direct and indirect influences species exert on each other in a community, and (

Critical mass theory: An integrative conceptual review.

While the axiom that diversity is a competitive advantage has become commonplace, research has not provided a definitive answer regarding how much diversity is needed to attain this advantage. Critical mass theory proposes that a qualitative shift in group dynamics occurs when minority group representation reaches a threshold, strengthening members' influence on work processes and outcomes. We conducted an integrative conceptual review of 277 studies to evaluate and advance critical mass theory. Nearly a third of quantitative studies do not meet the methodological requirements for testing crit…

Muscarinic and nicotinic receptors stimulation by vagus nerve stimulation ameliorates trastuzumab-induced cardiotoxicity via reducing programmed cell death in rats.

Despite its efficacy in human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 positive cancer treatment, trastuzumab-induced cardiotoxicity (TIC) has become a growing concern. Due to the lack of cardiomyocyte regeneration and proliferation in adult heart, cell death significantly contributes to cardiovascular diseases. Cardiac autonomic modulation by vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) has shown cardioprotective effects in several heart disease models, while the effects of VNS and its underlying mechanisms against TIC have not been found. Forty adult male Wistar rats were divided into 5 groups: (i) control witho

Motion Analysis of the Extensor Carpi Ulnaris in Triangular Fibrocartilage Complex Injury Using Ultrasonography Images.

The subsheath of the extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU) tendon, a component of the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC), is particularly important as it dynamically stabilizes the distal radioulnar joint. However, the relationship between TFCC injury and ECU dynamics remains unclear. This study aimed to analyze ECU movement and morphology using ultrasonography (US) images. Twenty wrists of patients with TFCC injury, who underwent TFCC repair, were included in the injury group, and 20 wrists of healthy volunteers were in the control group. For static image analysis, curvature and linearity ratios
