Gynecomastia is a graded condition characterized by enlargement of the male breast that affects a significant proportion of the male population. A plethora of varying surgical approaches currently exists in the literature; thus this comprehensive review sought to analyze surgical practice patterns and trends as they pertain to gynecomastia grade and severity. The current literature was queried utilizing the PubMed and MEDLINE databases-based on predefined parameters and individual review, 17 studies were ultimately included. Key data points included gynecomastia grade, surgical intervention, r…

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional surface imaging (3DSI) has shown promise for plastic surgeons to objectively assess changes in body contour and breast volume.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the surgical outcome after bilateral subcutaneous mastectomy (BSM) and water jet-assisted liposuction (WAL) as treatment for idiopathic gynecomastia, using 3DSI to document changes regarding nipple-areolar complex (NAC) and breast volume.
METHODS: Thirty male patients (Simon II A to B) receiving BSM and WAL were enrolled. Eight subjects received additional mastopexy and NAC reduction. Use of a Vectra 3D Imaging Syst…

INTRODUCTION: Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly prescribed for many gastrointestinal diseases. A number of case reports have linked PPIs to gynecomastia in men, but large epidemiologic studies are lacking.
OBJECTIVE: To quantify the risk of gynecomastia with PPIs in male patients.
METHODS: Using the PharMetrics Plus™ health claims database from the United States, a retrospective cohort study of new PPI users and new amoxicillin users from 2006 to 2016 was conducted. Diagnosis of gynecomastia was identified by the International Classification for Diseases, 9th edition (ICD-9) and 10t…

OBJECTIVE: Gynecomastia is defined as a benign proliferation of male breast glandular tissue. Its prevalence during puberty varies between 50-60% and is also common in neonatal and elderly males. It develops mainly due to the disequilibrium between estrogen and androgen activity in breast tissue, where estradiol (E2) binds to estrogen receptors and stimulates ductal and glandular cells. The aim of this work was to investigate the relationship between sex hormone alterations and the natural history of gynecomastia.
METHODS: Participants in this study were young males referred to an outpatient …

BACKGROUND: Gynecomastia (GM) is a benign enlargement of male breast due to glandular tissue proliferation. GM is a symptom of systemic or local hormonal disturbances, which could be associated with functional changes or pathological conditions. However, the long-lasting steroid imbalance in men with GM might exert negative influence on their metabolic health.
METHODS: A total of 110 adult men with symptomatic GM were included in the present retrospective cross-sectional study. Anthropometric, metabolic, and hormonal data of the patients were collected.
RESULTS: In almost 64% of GM patients,…

Coexistence of the Poland syndrome and gynecomastia is a rare condition. Poland syndrome requires soft tissue augmentation of the affected side, whereas gynecomastia necessitates reduction of the breast tissue. To provide symmetry, breast reduction and fat grafting techniques should be combined. We report a 29-year-old male patient with left gynecomastia and right sided Poland syndrome. In order to correct his asymmetry on the anterior chest wall, left breast tissue resection and fat grafting to the right breast were performed. Having these two opposite conditions at the same time and on the s…

Background: Morbidity of traditional open surgery for the treatment of gynecomastia includes asymmetry, retraction of the nipple, and poor scarring. Other approaches were described to improve the results. Endoscopic subcutaneous mastectomy (ESCM) was reported in adult series, including a few adolescents. This technique was considered as safe with good aesthetic results. The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of ESCM in an adolescent series. Patient and Methods: We treated 19 adolescents with Simon's grade IIB and III gynecomastia between June 2014 and July 2018. They could choose op…

Gynecomastia is defined as an enlargement of the male breast. Although it is commonly seen during puberty, it is often overlooked by many physicians. As adolescent medicine specialists, we believe there is a gap in the literature concerning both the etiology and maybe more importantly the care of these adolescents. Thus, we have been dedicated to conducting research on this topic. The aim of this review article was to evaluate the studies concerning pubertal gynecomastia that took place at the Division of Adolescent Medicine, Hacettepe University, published between the years 2003 and 2016. The…

BACKGROUND: Gynecomastia is a very common entity in men, and several authors estimate that approximately 50% to 70% of the male population has palpable breast tissue. Much has been published with regard to the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of gynecomastia. However, the anatomy of the gynecomastia tissue remains elusive to most surgeons.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this article was to define the shape and consistency of the glandular tissue based on the vast experience of the senior author (MB).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between the years 1980 and 2014, a total of 5124 patients have been treated…

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the histopathology results of surgically excised breast specimens with the diagnosis of gynecomastia (GM).
SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Gynecomastia is a term used to describe benign hypertrophy of the breast in men; it is a common, mostly transient, phenomenon in adolescents, but may also be seen in older men. Breast enlargement can lead to psychological problems; if it persists it can be surgically corrected. The obtained breast tissue specimens are routinely submitted for pathological examination. We performed this study to assess the prevalence of pathol…

INTRODUCTION: Gynecomastia is the benign proliferation of the glandular tissue in the male breast. This condition is thought to be caused by the imbalance between estrogen action relative to androgen action at the breast tissue level. Bilateral gynecomastia is frequently found in the neonatal period, early in puberty, and with increasing age. Prepubertal unilateral gynecomastia in the absence of endocrine abnormalities is extremely rare, with only a few cases in literature.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We present an otherwise healthy boy of 12 years old with unilateral breast masses. No abnormalitie…

Pubertal gynecomastia is the glandular proliferation of male breast tissue. It is regarded as a physiological phenomenon, arising due to a presumed transient imbalance in the ratio of free androgen to free estrogen. Treatment with tamoxifen, a selective estrogen receptor blocker, has been shown to effectively reduce the disc size and is generally considered for treatment when the disc diameter is > 3-4 cm. For severe or persistent cases, surgery is considered the mainstay of treatment. We present three cases who reported dissatisfaction with the results of tamoxifen treatment and were therefor…

AIM: Male gynecomastia (MG), the most frequent mammary anomaly in human males, is a clinical disease occurring mainly in adolescence and old age. The aim of this study was therefore to analyze 126 consecutive cases of mixed gynecomastia, in order to assess the incidence of early and late postoperative complications and to evaluate the aesthetic results and the quality of life after surgery.
METHODS: From January 1st, 2000, to December 31st, 2006 a total of 126 cases of MG were performed by the Plastic Surgery Units of Siena and Pisa. Patients' average age was 28 years, 111 patients (88%) pres…

Risperidone is associated with hyperprolactinemia and its consequent symptoms such as gynnecomastia, galactorrhea and sexual dysfunction in adults, and less so in adolescents. Rarely, serotonin reuptake inhibitors are also associated with such adverse effects. We report a case of gynecomastia and galactorrhea in an adolescent male while on a combination of risperidone and fluvoxamine, although the serum prolactin was within normal range.

Gynecomastia involves enlargement of the male breast secondary to the proliferation of mammary ductules. It is seen in a number of conditions such as cirrhosis, chronic renal failure, Klinefelter syndrome, and leprosy. Recognition of the cutaneous manifestations of these conditions can help in identifying the correct etiology of the gynecomastia.
