An assessment of the occupational and environmental health needs in seven Southeastern European and West-Central Asian countries.

Eastern European and Central Asian countries are undergoing rapid socioeconomic and political reforms. Many old industrial facilities are either abandoned, or use outdated technologies that severely impact the environment. Emerging industries have less regulation than in developed countries and environmental and occupational problems seem to be increasing. Under a US National Institutes of Health pilot grant, we developed an interdisciplinary One Health research network in Southeastern Europe and West-Central Asia to identify environmental and occupational problems. From 2012 to 2014, this Geo

The relationship between lifestyle, occupational health, and work-related factors with presenteeism amongst general practitioners.

There is evidence that general practitioners (GPs) are more likely to exhibit sickness presenteeism than other health professional groups or other high-income earners and less likely to take sick leave. This study aims to examine the relationship between lifestyle, occupational health, and work-related factors with presenteeism amongst GPs. A cross-sectional study was conducted amongst GPs in 2011. Logistic regression was used to determine crude and adjusted odds ratios between lifestyle, occupational health, and work-related factors with presenteeism. Whilst adjusting for age and gender, exer

Opportunistic insights into occupational health hazards associated with waterpipe tobacco smoking premises in the United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND: Smokefree laws aim to protect employees and the public from the dangers of secondhand smoke. Waterpipe premises have significantly increased in number in the last decade, with anecdotal reports of poor compliance with the smokefree law. The literature is bereft of information pertaining to waterpipe premise employees. This study aimed to opportunistically gather knowledge about the occupational health hazards associated with working in waterpipe premises in London, England. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Employees from seven convenience-sampled, smokefree-compliant waterpipe premises in L

High pressure air jet in the endoscopic preparation room: risk of noise exposure on occupational health.

After high-level disinfection of gastrointestinal endoscopes, they are hung to dry in order to prevent residual water droplets impact on patient health. To allow for quick drying and clinical reuse, some endoscopic units use a high pressure air jet (HPAJ) to remove the water droplets on the endoscopes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the excessive noise exposure with the use of HPAJ in endoscopic preparation room and to investigate the risk to occupational health. Noise assessment was taken during 7 automatic endoscopic reprocessors (AERs) and combined with/without HPAJ use over an 8

Toxicological aspects of cadmium and occupational health activities to prevent workplace exposure in Japan: A narrative review.

Chemicals are an essential part of modern manufacture processes. Their use must be managed with great attention in occupational settings to avoid serious detrimental effects to the health of employees. For example, cadmium compounds are indispensable for the production of nickel-cadmium rechargeable batteries or as chemical stabilizer in plastics. It is an exceptionally toxic heavy metal and personnel exposed to cadmium in the workplace meet with potential health risks that can lead to the development of kidney, skeletal and respiratory disorders. In consequence, proactive and systematical dev

Irritant vocal cord dysfunction and occupational bronchial asthma: differential diagnosis in a health care worker.

OBJECTIVES: Vocal cord dysfunction (VCD) is an uncommon respiratory disease characterized by the paradoxical adduction of vocal cords during inspiration, that may mimic bronchial asthma. The pathogenesis of VCD has not been clearly defined but it is possible to recognize non-psychologic and psychologic causes. The majority of patients are female but, interestingly, a high incidence of VCD has been documented in health care workers. A misdiagnosis with asthma leads to hospitalisation, unnecessary use of systemic steroids with related adverse effects, and sometimes tracheostomy and intubation. I

Results from a community-based occupational health survey of Vietnamese-American nail salon workers.

A community-university collaborative partnership assessed self-reported work-related health effects and environmental factors in Boston's Vietnamese immigrant community via an interviewer-assisted survey. Seventy-one nail technicians responded. Musculoskeletal disorders, skin problems, respiratory irritation and headaches were commonly reported as work-related, as were poor air quality, dusts and offensive odors. The reporting of a work-related respiratory symptom was significantly associated with the reporting of exposure factors such as poorer air quality. Absence of skin disorders was assoc

[Secondary nephropathies in occupational health practice. II. Kidney disorders induced by drug and contrast media].

Nowadays, drug induced kidney disorders have become a frequent health problem. Iatrogenic nephropathies are manifested by a wide variety of clinical symptoms, including acute renal failure (about 20%), one of the major negative prognostic factors in internal diseases. Occupational kidney disorders induced by exposure to chemical toxins at a work place may coincide with those caused by drugs. This comorbidity can increase the risk of their progression to further deterioration of renal function, leading finally to long lasting work disability among employees. In this paper, we analyzed the mecha

Corneal foreign bodies--first aid, treatment, and outcomes. Skills review for an occupational health setting.

Eye injuries from foreign body incidents remain prevalent in the workplace setting. Often the professional nurse provides the first line of treatment. The informal class presented at the authors' facility offered a comprehensive, organized presentation of a common injury encountered in the practice of occupational health nursing. Strenghts of the presentation included handouts demonstrating eye eversion technique and a flip chart summarizing the content to be placed in each medical station as quick reference. One challenge involved presenting the information to all nurses. The site encompasses

Tobacco abuse and its treatment. Turning old and new issues into opportunities for the occupational health nurse.

1. Tobacco use is linked to excessive rates of cardiovascular disease, lung disease, and many fatal neoplasms. In the United States it is the number one cause of illness and premature death. Cigarettes and other combusted forms of tobacco generate environmental tobacco smoke, a major contributor to asthma attacks, heart attacks, and lung cancer among nonsmokers. 2. Cigarettes are the most prevalent and abused form of tobacco, but other forms, such as cigars and smokeless tobacco, also contain nicotine and may cause dependency in high risk groups that consume these products. 3. The addictivenes

Infection control in physicians' offices. Academy of Pediatrics. The American Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Infection control is an integral part of pediatric practice in outpatient settings as well as in hospitals. All employees should be educated regarding the routes of transmission and techniques used to prevent transmission of infectious agents. Policies for infection control and prevention should be written, readily available, updated annually, and enforced. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention standard precautions for hospitalized patients with modifications from the American Academy of Pediatrics are appropriate for most patient encounters. As employers, pediatricians are required b

Occupational allergy to latex--life threatening reactions in health care workers. Report of three cases.

During the last decade natural rubber latex (NRL) allergy has been acknowledged as a major problem among rubber glove-wearing medical personnel. Epidemiological studies carried out in the European Union member states as well as in the United States reveal that 2% to 15% of health care workers are allergic to latex. Latex allergy symptoms range from mild contact urticaria to severe systemic reactions. Serious, generalised reactions occur in 6-8% of patients allergic to latex. The risk factors for latex-induced anaphylaxis have not as yet been identified. NRL allergy symptoms may occur in the wo

Prevalence of occupational asthma and immunologic sensitization to psyllium among health personnel in chronic care hospitals.

Psyllium is a high molecular weight laxative that can cause occupational asthma among health care workers who prepare this product for chronically ill patients. The prevalence of immunologic sensitization and occupational asthma to psyllium is unknown. We investigated the personnel of four chronic care hospitals, including two where four cases of occupational asthma had been confirmed the year preceding the trial. A questionnaire and skin prick tests with psyllium and various inhalants were administered to 193 of 248 (78%) of the workers who agreed to participate. Seventy-five subjects (39%) h

Improper office disposal of needles and other sharps: an occupational hazard outside of health care institutions.

An employee of a private disposal company suffered a finger needlestick injury while collecting waste at curbside from a building containing medical offices. Subsequent inspection of the contents of the garbage bags revealed the presence of used syringes and unsheathed needles. The Ministry of the Environment has developed a regulation and guidelines for the handling and disposal of biomedical waste including needles and other sharps. These specify that approved carriers and receivers are required for disposal; properly decontaminated waste is considered non-hazardous solid waste and can go to
