Using epidemiological data to explore the impact of mental health and substance use disorder treatment facilities and family planning clinic availability on pre-exposure prophylaxis use for women in the U.S.

Ending the HIV epidemic by 2030 is partly dependent on preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP), but usage has been markedly low among women. This study sought to determine if access to mental health and substance use disorder treatment, and family planning clinics have an impact on women's PrEP uptake. Using epidemiological data from publicly available data sources, we employed a difference-in-differences design to quantify the effect of the availability of these facilities on PrEP rate and PrEP-to-need ratio across all 50 states. We found that mental health and substance use disorder treatment had a s

Effect of Picture-based health education and counselling on knowledge and adherence to preconception Iron-folic acid supplementation among women planning to be pregnant in Eastern Ethiopia: a randomized controlled trial.

The present study examined the effect of picture-based nutrition education on knowledge and adherence to pre-conception iron-folic acid supplement (IFAS) in Ethiopia, a country where there is a high burden of neural tube defects (NTDs) and anaemia. In eastern Ethiopia, a parallel randomised controlled trial design was employed among women planning to get pregnant. The interventional arm (n 122) received a preconception picture-based nutrition education and counselling along with an IFAS and the control arm (n 122) received only a preconception IFAS. The effects of the intervention between-grou

Uptake of long acting reversible contraception following integrated couples HIV and fertility goal-based family planning counselling in Catholic and non-Catholic, urban and rural government health centers in Kigali, Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: When integrated with couples' voluntary HIV counselling and testing (CVCT), family planning including long acting reversible contraceptives (LARC) addresses prongs one and two of prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT). METHODS: In this observational study, we enrolled equal numbers of HIV concordant and discordant couples in four rural and four urban clinics, with two Catholic and two non-Catholic clinics in each area. Eligible couples were fertile, not already using a LARC method, and wished to limit or delay fertility for at least 2 years. We provided CVCT and fertil

The influence of diagnosed mental health conditions and symptoms of depression and/or anxiety on suicide ideation, plan, and attempt among college students: Findings from the Healthy Minds Study, 2018-2019.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 11% of 18-25 year-olds report thoughts of suicide. Additionally, suicide is the second leading cause of death in college student populations. We sought to evaluate the relationship between diagnosed mental health conditions and current symptoms of depression and/or anxiety and suicidality in the past year. METHODS: Healthy Minds Study (HMS) 2018-2019 data from 38,757 college students were analyzed. The PHQ-9, GAD-7, and prior mental health condition diagnoses were used to create a suicidality severity index and we determined how these associations varied by race/ethn

Predictors of long term weight loss maintenance in patients at high risk of type 2 diabetes participating in a lifestyle intervention program in primary health care: The DE-PLAN study.

Lifestyle interventions in type 2 diabetes (DM2) prevention implementation studies can be effective and lasting. Long-term weight loss maintenance enhances the intervention effect through a significant decrease in diabetes incidence over time. Our objective was to identify factors predicting long-term successful weight reduction maintenance achieved during a DM2 prevention program in patients with high DM2 risk in primary health care. Study participants (n = 263), middle-aged, slightly obese with baseline increased DM2 risk (Finnish Diabetes Risk Score (FINDRISC)>14), but no diabetes were invi

BACKGROUND: The fourth most common cancer in women worldwide is cervical cancer. Over 87% of deaths from cervical cancer occur in developing nations. One of the risks of developing cervical cancer is the use of oral contraceptives. However, there is limited evidence on the knowledge, attitude, and practice of cervical cancer screening among family planning service users in Ethiopia. OBJECTIVE: To assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice toward cervical cancer screening and its associated factors among family planning service users. METHODS: A facility-based cross-sectional study was cond

Improving private tuberculosis patient notifications in Akot Tuberculosis Unit of Vidarbha region of India: A Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) based approach for enhanced public health reporting.

India bears the world's largest tuberculosis (TB) burden, and under-reporting from private-sector providers continues to hinder elimination goals. In the Akot Tuberculosis Unit (TU) of Maharashtra, private notifications remained disproportionately low despite extensive private healthcare presence. This study implemented a structured quality-improvement (QI) model using Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles to enhance TB case notifications from private providers.A mixed-method quality-improvement study was conducted from August to December 2023. Four iterative PDSA cycles were implemented targeting p

The Forearm Fracture Recovery in Children Evaluation (FORCE) trial: statistical and health economic analysis plan for an equivalence randomized controlled trial of treatment for torus fractures of the distal radius in children.

AIMS: Torus fractures of the distal radius are the most common fractures in children. The NICE non-complex fracture guidelines recently concluded that bandaging was probably the optimal treatment for these injuries. However, across the UK current treatment varies widely due to a lack of evidence underpinning the guidelines. The Forearm Fracture Recovery in Children Evaluation (FORCE) trial evaluates the effect of a soft bandage and immediate discharge compared with rigid immobilization. METHODS: FORCE is a multicentre, parallel group randomized controlled equivalence trial. The primary outcom

The role of costing in the introduction and scale-up of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis: evidence from integrating PrEP into routine maternal and child health and family planning clinics in western Kenya.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding the cost of strategies to reach and deliver pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to priority populations is essential to assess the cost-effectiveness and budget impact of HIV prevention programmes. Providing PrEP through maternal and child health and family planning clinics offers a promising strategy to reach women in high HIV burden settings. We estimated incremental costs and explored the cost drivers of integrating PrEP delivery into routine maternal and child health and family planning services in Kenya. METHODS: We conducted a costing study from the provider pers

The impact of a cancer Survivorship Care Plan on gynecological cancer patient and health care provider reported outcomes (ROGY Care): study protocol for a pragmatic cluster randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: There is a need for improvement of information provision and post-treatment care for cancer survivors. A Survivorship Care Plan (SCP) is recommended by the American Institute of Medicine and the Dutch Health Council, which is a summary of patients' course of treatment as a formal document, and includes recommendations for subsequent cancer surveillance, management of late effects, and strategies for health promotion. Until now, evidence on the effects of implementing the SCP in clinical practice is lacking. The rationale and study design of a pragmatic cluster randomized trial, aim

Implementation of clinical practice guidelines using the Plan-Do-Study-Act framework: The methodology and experiences of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Health Informatics Infrastructure Registry Study on gestational diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) use clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) to inform evidence-based practice. Despite the availability of CPGs, guidelines are not always translated into practice. This challenge is central to implementation science (IS), which seeks to understand how evidence can be adopted and sustained. METHODS: The Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) Registry Study was a multiphase, multisite hybrid implementation study that explored guideline implementation using quality improvement (QI) methods grounded in the Model of Improvement and guided by Plan-Do-

The feasibility and acceptability of implementing simplified cognitive behavioral therapy approaches to support postpartum mental health and address associated social and behavioral barriers to postpartum family planning in Amhara, Ethiopia: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Poor mental health can negatively impact health outcomes across diverse health areas, including in the first year postpartum. Yet, the intersection of postpartum mental health and postpartum family planning (FP) is understudied. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based practice that has proven helpful for improving mental health and supporting positive behavior change across health areas, including in low-resource settings. Drawing on existing CBT tools, we created and piloted an intervention called Mothers Time, designed to be delivered in three sessions by a commun
