Elderly people often show degraded hearing performance and have difficulties in understanding speech, particularly in noisy environments. Although loss in peripheral hearing sensitivity is an important factor in explaining these low performances, central alterations also have an impact but their exact contributions remained unclear. In this study, we focus on the functional effects of aging on auditory cortex responses. Neuronal discharges and local field potentials were recorded in the auditory cortex of aged guinea pigs (> 3 years), and several parameters characterizing the processing of aud

BACKGROUND: A sudden unilateral hearing loss in childhood is commonly regarded as an unusual event.
CASE-REPORT: In this paper, we report of a 10 year old girl suffering from a unilateral right-sided sudden hearing loss following an acute infection with Mycoplasma pneumoniae, which is also rarely observed. Maximum hearing loss was estimated around 30 dB (0.25-6 kHz), which resolved after infusions using plasma expanders. Both transitory and distortion product otoacoustic emissions remained absent, while latencies of acoustically evoked potentials were normal.
DISCUSSION: This suggests a dama

Lichen planus (LP) is a chronic, autoimmune, inflammatory disease. We believe that tympanic membrane and outer ear canal can be affected by the disease and since it is an autoimmune disease inner ear involvement may be seen. The aim of this study was to evaluate hearing functions in patients with LP. Thirty patients with LP and 28 healthy controls were involved in the study. Pure tone audiometry, tympanogram and Transient Evoked Otoacoustic Emissions tests were applied to the patients. When the airway hearing thresholds of the patient and control groups in the 125-8000 Hz frequency range were

Blast injury typically consists of a mixed conductive and sensorineural hearing loss. The sensorineural component includes temporary as well as permanent threshold elevations. Auditory brainstem evoked potentials (ABEP) are sensitive to functional changes in various levels along the auditory pathway. ABEP were recorded from 37 survivors of blasts and latency measures were correlated with clinical findings. Prolongation of peak latencies was correlated with the conductive component of blast-induced hearing loss, as well as with the TTS component of the sensorineural impairment. No central effec

Over 1.1 billion individuals are at risk for noise induced hearing loss yet there is no accepted therapy. A long history of research has demonstrated that excessive noise exposure will kill outer hair cells (OHCs). Such observations have fueled the notion that dead OHCs underlie hearing loss. Therefore, previous and current therapeutic approaches are based on preventing the loss of OHCs. However, the relationship between OHC loss and hearing loss is at best a modest correlation. This suggests that in addition to the death of OHCs, other mechanisms may regulate the type and degree of hearing lo

Perrault syndrome is an autosomal recessive condition characterized by hearing loss and ovarian failure. Hearing loss in Perrault syndrome has been reported as sensorineural; however, only two cases in a single report have comprehensively investigated hearing in Perrault syndrome with TWNK variant, and the association between this variant and auditory neuropathy has not been established. The proband presented with hearing difficulties and primary amenorrhea. Hearing tests revealed mild hearing loss. Maximum speech intelligibility score was 95 % with normal otoacoustic emission. However, no aud

BACKGROUND: Balance is a complex process involving the coordinated activities of multiple sensory, motor and biomechanical components. Balance function may be disturbed in subjects suffering from hearing loss but the impairment has been attributed to the pathology underlying the hearing loss.
AIM: The purpose of the study was to investigate the possible interference of simulated conductive hearing loss with the ability to maintain postural balance.
METHODS: Twenty normal-hearing subjects, 20-30 years old, underwent the computerised dynamic posturography test battery before and after plugging

The wide range in susceptibility to noise-induced hearing loss has intrigued researchers and hearing conservationists alike. Some of these differences in variability have been attributed to various intrinsic factors such as eye color, gender, age, etc. However, a review of controlled research shows that the influence of these intrinsic variables is relatively small and cannot explain the wide range of hearing loss observed in demographic studies. Furthermore, uncontrolled variables or unrecognized drug and noise interaction may obscure the relation between noise exposure and hearing loss. With

Background/Objectives: Age-related hearing loss is one of the most prevalent chronic conditions in older adults and has emerged as a potentially modifiable risk factor for cognitive decline and dementia. Increasing evidence from epidemiological, neurobiological, and interventional studies has improved our understanding of the complex relationships between auditory dysfunction and cognitive aging. By highlighting findings in these areas, this review aims to aid clinicians and researchers gain a better understanding of the association between hearing loss, cognitive decline and dementia, and the

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Cleidocranial dysplasia is an autosomal dominant skeletal syndrome characterized by open skull sutures and clavicular hypoplasia or aplasia. It results from mutations in the transcription factor CBFA1 required for osteoblast differentiation and normal bone formation. Therefore, mutations in CBFA1 would be expected to cause conductive or sensorineural hearing loss, or both. The objective of the study was to evaluate the auditory function and head and neck manifestations of patients with cleidocranial dysplasia.
STUDY DESIGN: Case series.
METHODS: Patients with cleidocra

Over the course of a lifetime, the risk of experiencing multiple chronic conditions (multimorbidity) increases, necessitating complex healthcare regimens. Healthcare that manages these requirements in an integrated way has been shown to be more effective than services that address specific diseases individually. One such chronic condition that often accompanies ageing is hearing loss and related symptoms, such as tinnitus. Hearing loss is not only highly prevalent in older adults but is also a leading cause of disability. Accumulating evidence demonstrates an interplay between auditory functio

Functional hearing disorder (FHD) is one of the conditions that fall under the umbrella of Functional Neurological Disorders. FHD is characterized by a decrease in hearing sensitivity without correlation in standard audiological testing. In the general pediatric population, the prevalence of FHD is estimated at less than 2%. The prevalence is about 7% in children 6-17 years of age. Some authors, however, consider FHD the most common etiology of sudden onset bilateral hearing loss in children. The mean age at diagnosis of FHD is 11.3 years - the condition is rare below 7 years of age. FHD affec

In 19 evaluable cancer patients treated with cis-diamminedichloroplatinum (cis-DDP) Platidiam-Lachema containing chemotherapy the ototoxicity was assessed. There was an increase of hearing threshold of air-conduction in frequency of 6000 and 8000 Hz as compared with pretreatment audiograms in four patients (21%). In one case only the hearing loss was reversible. The usual hearing loss was of 10--15 dB and maximal of 20 dB. In those four patients with ototoxicity the decrease of creatinine clearence under 60 ml/min occurred at the same time. It is suggested that the altered renal function could

INTRODUCTION: Otosclerosis is an osteodystrophy of the labyrinthine capsule producing conductive hearing loss. If the process invades the cochlea, a sensorineural hearing loss usually takes place. The cochlear implant is a good alternative in these patients.
OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the behaviour of cochlear implantation in otosclerosis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We reviewed a database of 250 patients that underwent cochlear implantation, performing a retrospective study of 13 patients with clinical, audiological and/or imaging findings of bilateral otosclerosis. The 26 ears were studied as to th

Glutamate is the main excitatory neurotransmitter in both the peripheral and central auditory systems. Changes of glutamate and glutamate-related genes with age may be an important factor in the pathogenesis of age-related hearing loss-presbycusis. In this study, changes in glutamate-related mRNA gene expression in the CBA mouse inferior colliculus with age and hearing loss were examined and correlations were sought between these changes and functional hearing measures, such as the auditory brainstem response (ABR) and distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs). Gene expression of 68 gl

Hereditary hearing loss is challenging to diagnose because of the heterogeneity of the causative genes. Further, some genes involved in hereditary hearing loss have yet to be identified. Using whole-exome analysis of three families with congenital, severe-to-profound hearing loss, we identified a missense variant of SLC12A2 in five affected members of one family showing a dominant inheritance mode, along with de novo splice-site and missense variants of SLC12A2 in two sporadic cases, as promising candidates associated with hearing loss. Furthermore, we detected another de novo missense variant

Sudden inner ear hearing loss initially might suggest a psychogenic disorder of hearing, particularly when it is bilateral and simultaneous. The differential diagnosis includes disseminated encephalitis, syphilitic labyrinthitis and Cogan's syndrome. The history and cause of acute bilateral deafness in meningitis are easy to recognise. Furthermore, unilateral acute inner ear deafness should not be regarded as idiopathic without further consideration. A acoustic neuroma is a possible cause even of a low-tone hearing loss. More controversial is rupture of the round window membrane as a cause of

BACKGROUND: Given that hearing loss is associated with increased social isolation, reduced earning potential and neurocognitive disease, findings of uncorrected hearing loss in the homeless population have important policy implications. We sought to estimate the prevalence of hearing impairment in an adult homeless population.
METHODS: We recruited adult (age ≥ 18 yr) homeless people across 10 homeless shelters in Toronto between April and June 2018 using a 2-stage sampling technique. Participants were interviewed by 1 interviewer using a modified survey that had been used in previous studies
