Cardiac manifestations of Pallister-Killian syndrome.

Pallister-Killian syndrome (PKS) is a sporadic multisystem genetic diagnosis characterized by facial dysmorphia, variable developmental delay and intellectual impairment, hypotonia, hearing loss, seizures, differences in skin pigmentation, temporal alopecia, diaphragmatic hernia, congenital heart defects, and other systemic abnormalities. Although congenital heart defects have been described in association with PKS, the full spectrum of heart disease is still not entirely known. Here, we describe the pattern of cardiac findings of 81 probands with PKS who have had at least one cardiac evaluati

Neonatal ECG screening for congenital heart disease in Down syndrome.

We studied the value of routine neonatal electrocardiography (ECG) in the 1st 48 hours of life to diagnose congenital heart disease in 37 neonates with Down syndrome. Twenty-four infants had no clinical evidence of congenital heart disease, had normal ECGs and normal cardiac anatomy on echocardiography. Thirteen children (35.2%) had congenital heart disease. The ECG was normal in seven infants with congenital heart disease: four with atrial septal defect (ASD), two with tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) and one with ventricular septal defect (VSD). A left QRS axis deviation was found in six infants: f

Intermediate-term clinical outcomes of primary biventricular repair for left ventricular outflow tract obstruction and ventricular septal defect.

OBJECTIVE: Primary biventricular repair for left ventricular outflow tract obstruction and ventricular septal defect remains challenging. The intermediate-term outcomes and risk factors for mortality remain undefined. METHODS: All patients undergoing primary biventricular repair of left ventricular outflow tract obstruction and ventricular septal defect from 1995 to 2008 at the C. S. Mott Children's Hospital, University of Michigan Health Systems were analyzed. RESULTS: Thirty-one patients (mean age, 18 days; 20 male) with a median follow-up of 6.7 years (range, 0.3-13.5 years) were identifi

Simple congenital heart lesions.

Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) can provide comprehensive anatomic and physiological information about the cardiovascular system. The review article describes the application of CMR to several simple congenital heart lesions: atrial septal defects and other interatrial communications, ventricular septal defects, patent ductus arteriosus, partially anomalous pulmonary venous connection, and coarctation of the aorta. The anatomy, clinical features, and management of these lesions are discussed. CMR techniques to evaluate patients with these lesions are described and relevant literature

Repair of Partial Atrioventricular Septal Defects in Adults: A Single Center Experience.

Limited data are available on long-term outcome after repair of partial atrioventricular septal defects (pAVSD) in adults. We sought to review our experience. Between January 1, 1957 and December 31, 2016, 179 adult patients [median age (IQR) 34 (18, 72) years] underwent primary repair of pAVSD. The most common associated defects were secundum atrial septal defect (n = 38) and ventricular septal defect (VSD) (n = 7). Left atrioventricular valve (LAVV) zone of apposition (ZOA) was complete in 47 patients and LAVV regurgitation (≥moderate) was present in 73 patients. Autologous pericardium (n =

Is there another type of biventricular atrioventricular connection?

In evaluating a 9-year-old girl, we encountered the following cardiac anomalies: a left atrioventricular valve (the morphologic left atrium on the left side, connected with the morphologic left ventricle); concordant atrioventricular connections; a right atrioventricular valve (a morphologic right atrium on the right side, connected with the morphologic right ventricle); concordant atrioventricular connection; a "central" atrioventricular valve (separating the morphologic right atrium from the morphologic left ventricle); and discordant atrioventricular connection with intact interatrial and i

Congenital cardiac defects in two closely related Jersey calves.

This paper describes similar congenital cardiac anomalies in 2 half sibling Jersey calves. Both calves had ventricular septal defects with dextraposition of the aorta and hypertrophy of the right ventricle, consistent with Eisenmenger's complex. One of the calves also had patent foramen ovale. The 2 calves had been sired by the same bull, and collateral relationships existed between the sire and the 2 dams.

[A report of successful surgical management of ASD, VSD and PDA associated with partial DiGeorge syndrome in infant].

We report an infantile male case of ASD, VSD and PDA associated with DiGeorge syndrome. The patient who was 58-day old presented the partial deficiency of cell-mediated immunity and normocalcemia before the admission to our hospital. We made semi-emergent operation because of increasing of lung congestion caused by repetitional infection of upper respiratory tract. Direct closure of the ASD, patch closure of the VSD and ligation of the PDA were performed successfully. He was suffered from severe pneumonia caused by MRSA in early postoperative stage. It was effective to give antibiotics and gam

Unique variant of Taussig-Bing heart: double-outlet right ventricle with double ventricular septal defects and double overriding of great arteries.

A cyanotic, tachypneic newborn was diagnosed to have double-outlet right ventricle of the Taussig-Bing type. Cardiac failure did not respond to medical treatment or surgical palliation. Postmortem examination revealed two ventricular septal defects (VSDs), one a malalignment VSD in the membranous septum and adjacent tissue and the other in the anterosuperior part of the muscular septum. The D-malposed aortic root emerged mainly from the right ventricle, with aortic-mitral continuity. The larger posterolateral pulmonary root arose almost entirely from the right ventricle, confluent with the mus

[Noonan syndrome associated with atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect and pulmonary stenosis--a case report].

A 10 year old girl with diagnosis of Noonan syndrome was admitted to our hospital because of easy fatiguability and cardiac murmur. She had a peculiar face with hypertelorism, saddle nose, webbed neck and kyphosis. Chromosomal analysis demonstrated normal 46 XX pattern. Associated cardiac anomalies in this case were atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect and pulmonary stenosis caused by pulmonary valvular dysplasia. The cardiac anomalies were corrected successfully and postoperative clinical course was uneventful.

Impaired ventilatory efficiency after closure of atrial or ventricular septal defect.

OBJECTIVES: Atrial and ventricular septal defects are the most common congenital heart defects and the closing procedures share important similarities. Generally, the postoperative outcome is considered benign, but there is growing concern regarding late ventilatory function. Therefore, the aim of this review was to describe the ventilatory function in patients with open as well as percutaneously or surgically closed atrial and ventricular septal defects. METHODS: We performed a search protocol based on the "Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses" (PRISMA) guidelin

Lifetime risk of comorbidity in patients with simple congenital heart disease: a Danish nationwide study.

AIMS: In a continuously ageing population of patients with congenital heart disease (CHD), understanding the long-term risk of morbidity is crucial. The aim of this study was to compare the lifetime risks of developing comorbidities in patients with simple CHD and matched controls. METHODS AND RESULTS: Using the Danish nationwide registers spanning from 1977 to 2018, simple CHD cases were defined as isolated atrial septal defect (ASD), ventricular septal defect (VSD), pulmonary stenosis, or patent ductus arteriosus in patients surviving until at least 5 years of age. There were 10 controls id

Original Article--Clinical and Procedural Characteristics of Successful Transcatheter Device Closure of Ostium Secundum Atrial Septal Defect in Symptomatic Children Weighing <15 kg: A Retrospective Study Spanning One Decade From South India.

OBJECTIVES: This retrospective study sought to determine the feasibility of transcatheter atrial septal defect device closure in patients less than 15 kg, as well as to assess complication rates and the reasons for unsuccessful device closure. BACKGROUND: In general, the risks associated with transcatheter atrial septal defect device closure are believed and reported to be relatively low, but the evidence stems from trials involving adults and older children. Current guidelines do not recommend atrial defect closure in device closure in children <15 kg, due to limited data available for feasi
