We retrieved clinical data of 13 men having herpes simplex virus (HSV)-induced non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU) without visible herpetic lesions. They visited a clinic in Sendai, Japan, between April 2013 and December 2015. All the men complained of dysuria. Meatitis was observed in 9 of the 13 men. A 55-year-old man presents with a 10-cm condylomatous penoscrotal mass. Final pathology after surgical removal reveals a rare vegetative lesion with underlying herpes simplex virus infection. WHO reports that 90% of human population is infected by different types of herpesviruses, which develop latency or cause oral and genital herpes, conjunctivitis, eczema herpeticum, and other diseases. Herpesvirus almost always accompanies HIV-infection and complicates AIDS treatment. Herpes simplex virus type 1 is one of the most wide spread viruses from the Herpesviridae family. HSV virion, genome structure, replication mechanisms, antiherpes drug development strategies, including design of prodrugs, and mutations causing ACV-resistance in clinical HSV isolates are discussed in this review.

We found the prevalence of recurrent lymphocytic meningitis associated with herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) was 2.2/100,000 population in Finland during 1996-2006, higher than previous estimates. PCR was most sensitive in detecting HSV-2 DNA from cerebrospinal fluid if the sample was taken 2-5 days after symptom onset.

Herpes simplex virus encephalitis in the newborn typically involves the cerebral cortex in a widespread manner. Herpes simplex virus type 2 rarely involves the brainstem. Here we report a 16-day-old infant with predominant brainstem and cerebellar involvement secondary to herpes simplex virus type 2 infection. We report a 41-year-old man with meningoencephalitis associated with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). The patient developed fever, headache and dysuria followed by generalized convulsion and neck stiffness, and the CSF showed pleocytosis. PURPOSE: To describe the clinical findings in a patient with Parinaud's oculoglandular syndrome as an uncommon manifestation of primary herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infection.
METHODS: The clinical course, the laboratory findings, the therapy, and the outcome regarding a 14-year-old girl are described.
RESULTS: The culture and PCR detection of HSV-1 on conjunctiva and skin scrapings, along with seroconversion to HSV, confirmed the etiology. The oral and local acyclovir therapy led to a prompt improvement in the patient's symptoms.
