A Theoretical Model of Reproductive Coercion and Abuse and Legal Entrapment: Barriers to Health, Safety, and Well-being for Mothers and Children.

PURPOSE: This purpose of this article is to encourage the adoption of a theoretical model that centers the ways in which experiences of reproductive coercion and abuse (RCA) intersect with legal entrapment, gendered immobility, and adverse health consequences. This framework integrates disparate bodies of scholarship that have been neglected in prior examinations of RCA in order to provide a heuristic tool for research, practice, and policy. METHODS: The authors discuss the existing literature on RCA and propose a theoretical model informed by feminist and reproductive justice theories, embed

Coded Aperture Optimization in X-Ray Computed Tomography via Sparse Covariance Matrix Estimation.

Coded aperture X-ray computed tomography (CAXCT) measures coded X-ray projections to reconstruct the inner structure of an object. Coded apertures, which determine the point spread function, can be designed to improve the reconstruction quality, but most approaches are computationally expensive, leading to very small images. In this paper, a sparse covariance matrix estimation approach is introduced to minimize the information loss sensed by projections corresponding to large tomographic images. The covariance matrix representing the map of the overlapping information of the projections is obt

Recent advances in machine learning predictions of protein-ligand binding affinities.

Accurately predicting protein-ligand binding affinities is a central task in rational drug design, as it directly influences hit discovery, lead optimization, and compound prioritization. Traditional approaches often suffer from limited accuracy, high computational cost, or dependence on heuristic scoring functions. Recent advances in machine learning (ML) have introduced new paradigms for the binding affinity prediction. In this review, we survey the latest developments in ML-based predictions of protein-ligand binding affinities across various directions, including structure-based approaches

Do PID-5 Trait Scores Predict Symptom Disorders? A Meta-analytic Review.

The Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5) has become influential in the dimensional assessment of personality dysfunction. Though most studies have examined links between PID-5 trait domains and personality pathology, a number of investigations have assessed relationships between PID-5 scores and symptom disorders (e.g., depression, anxiety). We employed meta-analytic techniques to synthesize findings in this area, identifying 26 publications assessing associations between PID-5 scores and symptom disorders (N of effect sizes across the five trait domains = 260). PID-5 domain score effect si

Time-Efficient RSA over Large-Scale Multi-Domain EON.

The poor timeliness of routing has always been an urgent problem in practical operator networks, especially in situations with large-scale networks and multiple network domains. In this article, a pruning idea of routing integrated with Dijkstra's shortest path searching is utilized to accelerate the process of routing in large-scale multi-domain elastic optical networks (EONs). The layered-graph approach is adopted in the spectrum allocation stage. To this end, an efficient heuristic algorithm is proposed, called "Branch-and-Bound based Routing and Layered Graph based Spectrum Allocation algo

Pitfalls of reasoning in hospital-based transfusion medicine.

INTRODUCTION: Hospital-based transfusion involves hundreds of daily medical decisions. Medical decision-making under uncertainty is susceptible to cognitive biases which can lead to systematic errors of reasoning and suboptimal patient care. Here we review common cognitive biases that may be relevant for transfusion practice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Biases were selected based on categorical diversity, evidence from healthcare contexts, and relevance for transfusion medicine. For each bias, we provide background psychology literature, representative clinical examples, considerations for transfu

High-resolution early warning system for human Puumala hantavirus infection risk in Germany.

The fluctuation of human infections by the Puumala orthohantavirus (PUUV) in Germany has been linked to weather and phenology parameters that drive the population growth of its host species. We quantified the annual PUUV-outbreaks at the district level by binarizing the reported infections in the period 2006-2021. With these labels we trained a model based on a support vector machine classifier for predicting local outbreaks and incidence well in advance. The feature selection for the optimal model was performed by a heuristic method and identified five monthly weather variables from the previ

Neuronal population models reveal specific linear conductance controllers sufficient to rescue preclinical disease phenotypes.

Preclinical drug candidates are screened for their ability to ameliorate in vitro neuronal electrophysiology, and go/no-go decisions progress drugs to clinical trials based on population means across cells and animals. However, these measures do not mitigate clinical endpoint risk. Population-based modeling captures variability across multiple electrophysiological measures from healthy, disease, and drug phenotypes. We pursued optimizing therapeutic targets by identifying coherent sets of ion channel target modulations for recovering heterogeneous wild-type (WT) population excitability profile

Production, physicochemical characterization, and anticancer activity of methotrexate-loaded phytic acid-chitosan nanoparticles on HT-29 human colon adenocarcinoma cells.

Methotrexate-loaded phytic acid-chitosan nanoparticles were synthesized by ionic gelation assisted by high-intensity sonication. The nanoparticles were characterized by particle size, polydispersity index, zeta potential (ZP) and encapsulation efficiency. Their physical stability was evaluated at 4 °C and 40 °C, whereas the in-vitro methotrexate release was assessed at pH 7.4. The data were heuristically fit to first-order, Higuchi, Peppas-Sahlin and Korsmeyer-Peppas models of release kinetics. Anticancer activity was evaluated using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazoliumbrom

A supervised machine learning-based methodology for analyzing dysregulation in splicing machinery: An application in cancer diagnosis.

Deregulated splicing machinery components have shown to be associated with the development of several types of cancer and, therefore, the determination of such alterations can help the development of tumor-specific molecular targets for early prognosis and therapy. Determining such splicing components, however, is not a straightforward task mainly due to the heterogeneity of tumors, the variability across samples, and the fat-short characteristic of genomic datasets. In this work, a supervised machine learning-based methodology is proposed, allowing the determination of subsets of relevant spl

Molecular Systems Biology of Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Rett Syndrome as an Archetype.

Neurodevelopmental disorders represent a challenging biological and medical problem due to their genetic and phenotypic complexity. In many cases, we lack the comprehensive understanding of disease mechanisms necessary for targeted therapeutic development. One key component that could improve both mechanistic understanding and clinical trial design is reliable molecular biomarkers. Presently, no objective biological markers exist to evaluate most neurodevelopmental disorders. Here, we discuss how systems biology and "omic" approaches can address the mechanistic and biomarker limitations in the

A qualitative analysis of case managers' use of harm reduction in practice.

The harm reduction approach has become a viable framework within the field of addictions, yet there is limited understanding about how this approach is implemented in practice. For people who are homeless and have co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorders, the Housing First model has shown promising results in employing such an approach. This qualitative study utilizes ethnographic methods to explore case managers' use of harm reduction within Housing First with a specific focus on the consumer-provider relationship. Analysis of observational data and in-depth interviews with provid

The impetus theory in judgments about object motion: a new perspective.

Several tendencies found in explicit judgments about object motion have been interpreted as evidence that people possess a naive theory of impetus. The theory states that objects that are caused to move by other objects acquire force that determines the kind of motion exhibited by the object, and that this force gradually dissipates over time. I argue that the findings can better be understood as manifestations of a general understanding of externally caused motion based on experiences of acting on objects. Experiences of acting on objects yield the idea that properties of the cause of motion

ON THE GENERALISED FANT EQUATION.

An analysis is made of the fluid-structure interactions involved in the production of voiced speech. It is usual to avoid time consuming numerical simulations of the aeroacoustics of the vocal tract and glottis by the introduction of Fant's 'reduced complexity' equation for the glottis volume velocity Q (G. Fant, Acoustic Theory of Speech Production, Mouton, The Hague 1960). A systematic derivation is given of Fant's equation based on the nominally exact equations of aerodynamic sound. This can be done with a degree of approximation that depends only on the accuracy with which the time-varying

Discovering that the shoe fits: the self-validating role of stereotypes.

Stereotypes can influence social perceptions in many ways. The current research examined a previously unexplored possibility-that activation of a stereotype can validate thoughts about other people when the thoughts are stereotype consistent (i.e., that stereotype activation can increase people's confidence in their previous stereotype-consistent thoughts). Given previous results for other forms of metacognition, this thought validation from stereotype activation should be most likely when people have the cognitive capacity to carefully process individuating information. In two experiments, pa

Bacteriophages as model organisms for virus emergence research.

Viruses fully emerge by gaining the ability to sustainably infect new host populations. When the hosts are humans, emerging viruses can present major public health issues, as exemplified by the AIDS pandemic. Therefore, heuristic approaches to identify nascent diseases before they become pandemic would be valuable. Unfortunately, the current patient-based and epidemiological approaches are ill-suited in this regard because they are largely responsive and not predictive. Alternative approaches based on virus evolutionary ecology might have greater potential to predict virus emergence. However,

Hoarding: a review.

BACKGROUND: Hoarding is currently categorized as a symptom of both obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder. However, hoarding has also been documented in association with other psychiatric disorders, raising questions about the classification, psychobiology and treatment of these symptoms. This paper reviews the literature on hoarding. METHOD: A computerized literature search was done using the MEDLINE database. Relevant references were collated and were used to obtain additional literature on hoarding behavior. RESULTS: Although hoarding may meet DS

Gender dysphoria in a child with true hermaphroditism.

This case report describes the psychosexual development of a child with true hermaphroditism who was assigned to the male sex at birth, but reassigned to the female sex at age two months. Given this child's excessive exposure to male sex hormone in utero, relative to physically normal females, one would predict a biological predisposition to behave in a masculine manner. This has occurred since two years of age. In addition, this child has had periodic episodes of gender disturbance, dysphoria, and ambivalence. In contrast, a physically normal fraternal twin sister has been conventionally femi
