A treatment strategy to avoid iatrogenic Pipkin type III femoral head fracture-dislocations.

INTRODUCTION: Reduction is urgently required in cases of traumatic hip dislocation to decrease the risk of avascular necrosis of the femoral head. However, successful reduction may not always be feasible for hip dislocations associated with femoral head fractures. This irreducibility may provoke further incidental fractures of the femoral neck with resultant Pipkin type III injuries. The purpose of this study was to describe an appropriate treatment strategy for irreducible femoral head fracture-dislocations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We treated nine patients with irreducible hip dislocations wi

Hip pain and its correlation with cam morphology in young skiers-a minimum of 5 years follow-up.

BACKGROUND: There is conflicting evidence regarding the association between cam morphological changes and hip pain, and it remains unclear who with cam morphology will develop hip pain and who will not. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between cam morphology, hip pain, and activity level at a 5-year follow-up in young Alpine and Mogul skiers. METHOD: All students (n = 76) at Åre Ski National Sports High School were invited and accepted participation in this prospective study at baseline. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of both hips was conducted to evaluate the presence of cam

Clinicoradiological Outcome of Concomitant Fractures of Proximal Femur and Femoral Shaft Treated With Second-Generation Cephalomedullary Nailing.

Background The ideal modality of treatment of concomitant fractures of the hip (intertrochanteric/femoral neck) and the femoral shaft is still evolving. The aim of our retrospective study was to assess the clinicoradiological outcome of such fractures managed by closed second-generation cephalomedullary nailing. Methodology The study was conducted among skeletally mature patients presenting within one week of injury who underwent closed second-generation cephalomedullary nailing (proximal femoral nail). Those presenting beyond one week or those who had pathological fractures, incomplete follow

Traumatic Native Hip Dislocations: An Audit at a Major Trauma Centre and Assessment of Clinical Practice at Centres Across the United Kingdom.

INTRODUCTION: Native hip dislocations are defined as traumatic dislocations of the hip, typically high-energy and associated with polytrauma. The majority of these injuries occur following motor vehicle accidents (MVAs). Due to the inherent stability of the hip joint, a significant force is required to cause dislocation. It is critical that such injuries are managed and reduced in a timely manner. We evaluated the current practice in a major trauma centre (MTC) in Cardiff and gathered information from emergency departments (EDs) in Wales and MTCs around the United Kingdom (UK). METHODS: We di

Traumatic hip dislocations in children and adolescents: diagnostic challenges and the significance of MRI imaging-a multi-center study.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic hip dislocations in children and adolescents are rare but can lead to severe outcomes like avascular necrosis. Delayed reductions, often due to overlooked dislocations in initial imaging, pose a major risk. The variability in symptoms and emergency care challenges early diagnosis. This multi-center study evaluates diagnostic approaches to enhance protocols for identifying traumatic hip dislocations in childhood. METHODS: This retrospective multi-center study included 76 patients (aged ≤ 17 years) with acute traumatic hip dislocations and open growth plates from 16 German

Epidemiology of NCAA Track and Field Injuries From 2010 to 2014.

BACKGROUND: Track and field (T&F) athletes compete in a variety of events that require different skills and training characteristics. Descriptive epidemiology studies often fail to describe event-specific injury patterns. PURPOSE: To describe the epidemiology of injuries in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) T&F by sex, setting (practice vs competition), and time of season (indoor vs outdoor) and to compare injury patterns by events within the sport. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiology study. METHODS: Data were obtained from the NCAA Injury Surveillance Program for all indoo

Stiff Landings, Core Stability, and Dynamic Knee Valgus: A Systematic Review on Documented Anterior Cruciate Ligament Ruptures in Male and Female Athletes.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are the most common ligament injury of the knee, accounting for between 100,000 and 200,000 injuries among athletes per year. ACL injuries occur via contact and non-contact mechanisms, with the former being more common in males and the later being more common in females. These injuries typically require surgical repair and have relatively high re-rupture rates, resulting in a significant psychological burden for these individuals and long rehabilitation times. Numerous studies have attempted to determine risk factors for ACL rupture, including hormonal

Asymmetric bilateral hip dislocation after motor vehicle accident - a case study and review of the literature.

Bilateral asymmetric dislocations of the hip are rare compared to unilateral dislocations. This case study describes a female restrained passenger involved in a motor vehicle accident who sustained asymmetric bilateral hip dislocations. The patient underwent successful closed reduction of both hips. The clinical course and follow-up assessment of the patient was otherwise uneventful. Computed tomography scans, essential for diagnosing intra-articular loose bodies and subtle fractures, were performed after reduction and revealed in the right hip a nondisplaced acetabular rim fracture of the pos

OUTCOMES OF SURGICAL TREATMENT FOR DISPLACED BOTH-COLUMN ACETABULAR FRACTURES.

Complex both-column acetabulum fractures are severe injuries, often with associated injuries and complications with uncertain clinical and functional outcome. Modern traumatological protocols point to early surgical treatment, with anatomical reduction and stable internal fixation of fragments as a prerequisite for achieving a good treatment outcome. This retrospective-prospective multicenter cohort study was conducted during the 2014-2020 period and included 24 cases that met the input parameters, using the Letournel and Judet classification, and application of a combined surgical approach, a

Acute Effects of Ice Hockey on Hip Range of Motion, Strength, and Pelvic Tilt in Competitive Male Players.

BACKGROUND: Ice hockey players are at high risk for hip and groin injury. Several risk factors have been identified or proposed, including lower hip rotation range of motion (ROM), lower hip adductor strength, lower ratio of hip adductor to abductor strength, and lower pelvic tilt angle. It is not known how these risk factors change acutely with ice hockey participation. HYPOTHESIS: Acute exposure to ice hockey will result in a reduction in ROM, strength, and pelvic tilt angle in competitive male players. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled cohort study. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 3. METHODS: Risk fact

Jacob's limp.

This study describes in modern medical terms a traumatic hip injury suffered by the Biblical patriarch Jacob approximately 3,500 years ago. The case history is based on the original Hebrew text found in the Bible book of Genesis (Chapter 32:25-33) as interpreted by traditional Jewish commentaries on the Bible. Jacob sustained a hip injury in hand-to-hand combat with an adversary or through an intense physiological reaction to a prophetic vision of such a battle. He appears to have sustained neurological injury to his sciatic nerve as well as musculoskeletal damage to his hip. These injuries ca

Surveillance of Injury Types, Locations, and Intensities in Male and Female Tennis Players: A Content Analysis of Online Newspaper Reports.

The popularity of modern tennis has contributed to the increasing number of participants at both recreational and competitive levels. The influx of numerous tennis participants has resulted in a wave of injury occurrences of different types and magnitudes across both male and female players. Since tennis injury harms both players' economic and career development, a better understanding of its epidemiology could potentially curtail its prevalence and occurrences. We used online-based tennis-related injury reports to study the prevalence, location types, and injury intensities in both male and f

Managing dislocations of the hip, knee, and ankle in the emergency department.

Dislocation of the major joints of the lower extremities--hip, knee, and ankle--can occur due to motor-vehicle crashes, falls, and sports injuries. Hip dislocations are the most common, and they require emergent management to prevent avascular necrosis of the femoral head. Knee dislocations are uncommon but potentially dangerous injuries that can result in amputation due to the potential for missed secondary injury, especially if they are reduced spontaneously. Isolated ankle dislocations are relatively rare, as most ankle dislocations involve an associated fracture. This review presents an al

EMG activity during positive-pressure treadmill running.

Success has been demonstrated in rehabilitation from certain injuries while using positive-pressure treadmills. However, certain injuries progress even with the lighter vertical loads. Our purpose was to investigate changes in muscle activation for various lower limb muscles while running on a positive-pressure treadmill at different amounts of body weight support. We hypothesized that some muscles would show decreases in activation with greater body weight support while others would not. Eleven collegiate distance runners were recruited. EMG amplitude was measured over 12 lower limb muscles.

Transosseous-Equivalent Double-Row Suture Anchor Technique for Proximal Hamstring Avulsion Injury.

Proximal hamstring ruptures are significant injuries in athletic populations, commonly resulting from eccentric overload during high-speed running or forced hip flexion with knee extension. These injuries lead to functional impairment and extended recovery periods if not properly treated. We present a comprehensive approach to proximal hamstring repairs using the SpeedBridge construct.
