Evolutionary history of rabies in Ghana.

Rabies virus (RABV) is enzootic throughout Africa, with the domestic dog (Canis familiaris) being the principal vector. Dog rabies is estimated to cause 24,000 human deaths per year in Africa, however, this estimate is still considered to be conservative. Two sub-Saharan African RABV lineages have been detected in West Africa. Lineage 2 is present throughout West Africa, whereas Africa 1a dominates in northern and eastern Africa, but has been detected in Nigeria and Gabon, and Africa 1b was previously absent from West Africa. We confirmed the presence of RABV in a cohort of 76 brain samples ob

Notes on the history of caffeine use.

As behooves something so deeply entrenched in culture, the historical origins of the use of methylxanthines are unknown and dressed in myth. This is true for coffee as well as tea, and for both it is interesting to note that their common use is really very recent. For coffee we know that its use became more widespread in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and in Europe this occurred in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The use of tea became more common during the Ming Dynasty in China and during the eighteenth century in Britain. Coffee was mostly an upper-class drink in Arabia, and

[History of pandemic influenza in Japan].

In Japan, influenza like epidemics were described many times since Heian era. However, Spanish flu as the modern medicine invaded Japan in 1918, thus almost infected 390,000 patients died with associated pneumonia. After the discovery of influenza virus in 1933, Japan experienced pandemic influenza--Asian flu(H2N2) in 1957. After about 10 years, Hong Kong flu (H3N2) came to Japan at 1968. However, we had many reliable antibiotics but had not any antiviral drug at the early time. After year 2000, we fortunately obtained reliable three antiviral drugs such as amantadine, oseltamivir and zanamivi

The history of pediatric airway reconstruction.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To review the history of pediatric laryngotracheal reconstruction and to highlight those who made major contributions in the field. The yellow fever vaccine: a history.

After failed attempts at producing bacteria-based vaccines, the discovery of a viral agent causing yellow fever and its isolation in monkeys opened new avenues of research. Subsequent advances were the attenuation of the virus in mice and later in tissue culture; the creation of the seed lot system to avoid spontaneous mutations; the ability to produce the vaccine on a large scale in eggs; and the removal of dangerous contaminants. An important person in the story is Max Theiler, who was Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health at Yale from 1964-67, and whose work on virus attenuation creat

The history of British gynaecological pathology.

The venerable tradition of British gynaecological pathology is honoured by brief comments on those who have pioneered work in this arena, using as the starting point the remarkable Scottish physician Dr Matthew Baillie who, with his uncles, the legendary William and John Hunter, can arguably be considered the founders of medicine in Great Britain. The impact of Baillie's great work 'The Morbid Anatomy of Some of the Most Important Parts of the Human Body' is noted. Because of the fame they achieved in working in other areas, the contributions to gynaecological pathology of Thomas Hodgkin and R

The history and evolution of circulatory shock.

This article reviews the development of early ideas regarding the origins and pathogenesis of shock. The early history of shock is related primarily to traumatic shock. More recent history centers on differentiation of clinical syndromes and individual characteristics. Definitions, classification systems, pathogenic theories, and treatments have evolved. Progress has been aided by constant development of improved assessment technologies. Today, shock is not a single syndrome and the definition of shock no longer is descriptive in nature. The most accepted current definition involves an oxygen …

Doyne Lecture: trachoma, is it history?

Trachoma has been known since pre-Pharaonic times and this infectious cause of blindness is targeted by the World Health Organization (WHO) for elimination by 2020. During the 19th century, trachoma was a major political problem in European countries as an important cause of disability in both soldiers and among the urban poor in the slums created by the Industrial Revolution. Even 100 years ago, trachoma was a major problem worldwide. Trachoma has now been eliminated from most developed regions, but the disease still affects some 150 million people in 56 developing countries. This paper revie

[A short history of phage therapy].

From 1920 to 1940, phage therapy was extensively used to treat various infectious diseases. In 1915, Félix d'Herelle followed cases of bacillary dysentery in the Institut Pasteur hospital. He observed "clear spots" on bacteria culture. In 1917, d'Herelle presented a note to the "Académie des sciences de Paris" entitled: "on an invisible microbe, an antagonist of the dysentery bacillus". D'Herelle named this microbial agent bactériophage. In 1919, there was an epidemic of "fowl typhoid" in France. For d'Herelle, it was an opportunity to study phage behavior. He suggested that it was necessary t

An important date in rabies history.

Rabies is estimated to cause 31,000 human deaths in Asia annually. Several recent events, including World Rabies Day have brought this neglected disease to the attention of the scientific community, governmental authorities, the media and the public. It is hoped that this will result in an increased collaboration between veterinary and human health authorities, and an involvement at all levels necessary for the control and elimination of rabies in dogs, the main reservoir and vector of rabies in Asia. Dog rabies elimination is considered as the most cost-effective solution to prevent rabies de

A history of the concept of atypical depression.

The term atypical depression as a preferentially monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI)-responsive state was first introduced by West and Dally in 1959. Further characterization of this syndrome and its responsiveness to antidepressants came to occupy the attention of many psychopharmacologists for the next 30 years. Different portrayals of atypical depression have emerged, for example, nonendogenous depression, phobic anxiety with secondary depression, vegetative reversal, rejection-sensitivity, and depression with severe chronic pain. Consistency across or within types has been unimpressive, and
