Invisible Stories: A Phenomenological Study of Bi and Trans Parent Experiences Within Elementary Schools in the Southwestern United States.

Heteronormativity, family hegemony, and gender biases in K-12 education threaten child safety, parental dignity, and identity among queer families. While prior research examined the experiences of queer parents-specifically those of lesbian and gay parents-empirical attention to school-related experiences of trans and bi parents is lacking. Hence, this phenomenological study focuses on the PK-12 school-related experiences of bi and trans parents. Using queer theory as a theoretical framework, we review relevant literature on family hegemony, gender biases, and heteronormativity within school s

Use of fertility services in Australian lesbian, bisexual and queer women's pathways to parenthood.

BACKGROUND: It is estimated that up to one in three lesbian, bisexual or queer (LBQ) women in Australia have children. In the past decade, it has become common for LBQ women to pursue pregnancy using clinic-acquired donor sperm. AIMS: The aims of this paper are to explore pathways to parenthood among Australian LBQ women in the context of increased access to fertility clinics and identify the type of clinical fertility services being used. MATERIALS AND METHOD: This paper reports on female LBQ parents and expectant/prospective parents who participated in a 2016/2017 online survey of Australi

Sexual orientation and disordered eating in women: a meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Homosexuality is a clear risk factor for disordered eating in men; however, for women, research has yielded contradictory results. We conducted a meta-analysis to examine the association between sexual orientation and disordered eating in women. METHODS: PRISMA guidelines were used. Studies comparing disordered eating between lesbians and heterosexual women were identified using PsycNet database and Google Scholar. Twenty-one studies met inclusion criteria. Overall disordered eating, restricting, binging and purging were examined for heterosexual, lesbian, bisexual and 'mostly hetero

Breaking the Silences about Non-hetero Female Sexuality in Saghi Ghahraman's Poetry.

Born in Iran, Saghi Ghahraman, an Iranian poet, lives in exile in Canada currently. Ghahraman founded Gilgamishaan Books, and founded and operated the Exiled Writers Club for two years. Zhe has been running the Iranian Queer Organization (IRQO) since 2008. In this paper analyzing hir non-phallocentric, multilayered, and non-linear poetry, I contend that Ghahraman rewrites androcentric history within the public sphere of cyberspace, pushing back against the attempts to mute queer sexuality and desire within Iranian culture. My main goal here is to illustrate that Ghahraman gives voice to the hi

Social integration, psychological distress, and smoking behaviors in a midwest LGBT community.

BACKGROUND: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) populations have smoking rates twice that of their heterosexual counterparts. To design effective outreach, prevention, and treatments for these individuals, a comprehensive understanding of associated factors is needed. OBJECTIVE: To increase understanding of how social integration and psychological distress are related to smoking behaviors among LGBT populations. DESIGN: A cross-sectional, descriptive study of 135 LGBT adults using an online data collection strategy. Multivariate analyses were performed to examine factors associate

Development of expertise in mental health service provision for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities.

OBJECTIVES: There are significant health disparities according to sexual orientation and gender identity, particularly in mental health; however, very few mental health professionals specialise in caring for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities. The purpose of this study was to explore how providers with LGBT-focused practices have developed their capacity for working with these populations. METHODS: Eight semi-structured interviews were conducted with practising mental health service providers with extensive experience serving LGBT individuals. Participants represented f

Explaining antigay violence using target congruence: an application of revised routine activities theory.

This research examines predictors of antigay violence (physical assault, sexual assault, and property damage) using Finkelhor and Asdigian's (1996) revised routine activities theory, which predicts that target congruence increases victimization risk. Results indicate about half of the sample experienced at least one type of victimization, while 25% experienced two or more types. Physical violence was the most common type of antigay victimization, with property damage and sexual assault occurring less often. Having a higher level of contact with gay/lesbian organizations and being out of the cl

Prevalence of mental disorders, psychological distress, and mental health services use among lesbian, gay, and bisexual adults in the United States.

Recent estimates of mental health morbidity among adults reporting same-gender sexual partners suggest that lesbians, gay men, and bisexual individuals may experience excess risk for some mental disorders as compared with heterosexual individuals. However, sexual orientation has not been measured directly. Using data from a nationally representative survey of 2,917 midlife adults, the authors examined possible sexual orientation-related differences in morbidity, distress, and mental health services use. Results indicate that gay-bisexual men evidenced higher prevalence of depression, panic att

Genomic epidemiology of syphilis in England: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Syphilis is a sexually transmitted bacterial infection caused by Treponema pallidum subspecies pallidum. Since 2012, syphilis rates have risen dramatically in many high-income countries, including England. Although this increase in syphilis prevalence is known to be associated with high-risk sexual activity in gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM), cases are rising in heterosexual men and women. The transmission dynamics within and between sexual networks of GBMSM and heterosexual people are not well understood. We aimed to investigate if whole genome sequencin

Comparing the effects of HIV self-testing to standard HIV testing for key populations: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: We update a previous systematic review to inform new World Health Organization HIV self-testing (HIVST) recommendations. We compared the effects of HIVST to standard HIV testing services to understand which service delivery models are effective for key populations. METHODS: We did a systematic review of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) which compared HIVST to standard HIV testing in key populations, published from 1 January 2006 to 4 June 2019 in PubMed, Embase, Global Index Medicus, Social Policy and Practice, PsycINFO, Health Management Information Consortium, EBSCO CINAHL Pl

Beyond Same-Sex Attraction: Gender-Variant-Based Victimization Is Associated with Suicidal Behavior and Substance Use for Other-Sex Attracted Adolescents.

Gender-variant-based victimization is victimization based on the way others perceive an individual to convey masculine, feminine, and androgynous characteristics through their appearance, mannerisms, and behaviors. Previous work identifies gender-variant-based victimization as a risk factor for health-risking outcomes among same-sex attracted youths. The current study seeks to examine this relationship among other-sex attracted youths and same-sex attracted youth, and determine if gender-variant-based victimization is similarly or differentially associated with poor outcomes between these two

Mental health of sexual minorities. A systematic review.

Many studies, reviews, and meta-analyses have reported elevated mental health problems for sexual minority (SM) individuals. This systematic review provides an update by including numerous recent studies, and explores whether SM individuals are at increased risk across selected mental health problems as per dimensions of sexual orientation (SO), genders, life-stages, geographic regions, and in higher quality studies. A systematic search in PubMed produced 199 studies appropriate for review. A clear majority of studies reported elevated risks for depression, anxiety, suicide attempts or suicide
