Primary lymphomas of the gastrointestinal tract represent 9% of all non-Hodgkin lymphomas, and of these only 3% arise in the rectum or anus. In contrast to their rare occurrence in the general population, the incidence of anorectal lymphomas in patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), particularly homosexual patients, may be as high as 26% as reported in our own series of AIDS-associated lymphomas. Kaposi’s sarcoma is the most common malignancy associated with human immunodeficiency virus. It commonly affects the skin but can present with visceral involvement, including the lungs. A 23-year-old homosexual male presented with fever, intractable cough and dyspnea. On examination, multiple skin lesions were revealed. In mid-December 2003, a cluster of 15 cases of lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) among male homosexuals was reported to the Municipal Health Service in Rotterdam by the Erasmus Medical Centre's outpatient clinic for sexually transmitted infections (STI). We present our experience with AIDS in Curaçao in the first 6 years after the introduction of a serologic HIV screening method. 71 cases of full-blown AIDS were diagnosed in the period 1-1-1986 to 12-31-1991 giving a mean incidence of 81 cases per million per year.
