The area of the granular tubules of the submaxillary gland was evaluated in male and female rats at 60 days of age. In males, this area was significantly greater than in females, corroborating the presence of sex dimorphism in this structure. Dimorphism disappeared after castration. Testosterone increased tubular area. Estrogen and progesterone as well as pregnancy reduced it. The tubular surface was significantly greater at term than at mid pregnancy.

To evaluate serum sex hormone profiles in nonalcoholic postmenopausal women with liver disease, 25 women with primary biliary cirrhosis (11 in cirrhotic stage) and 46 healthy controls were studied. Relations among hormone levels, emotional dispositions, and aggressive attributes were examined in 56 boys and 52 girls, age 9 to 14 years. The effect of vitamin A on calcium-regulating hormones was studied in rats. A single oral dose of 30 mg retinol equivalents (RE) given to adult rats caused no change to serum biologically active parathyroid hormone (bioactive-PTH) concentrations. The frequency of human cytomegalovirus (CMV) excretion during pregnancy denoting active infection has been demonstrated to increase as gestation advances and at term involves a significant percentage of women. The amino acid sequences of gastrointestinal hormones were compared in fragments of variable spans. Similarities within each of three peptide groups are extensive, but non-unique alignments were also noticed in the glucagon group.
