We present a synthesis of clinical, neuropathological, and biological details of the National Institutes of Health series of 300 experimentally transmitted cases of spongiform encephalopathy from among more than 1,000 cases of various neurological disorders inoculated into nonhuman primates during the past 30 years. The series comprises 278 subjects with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, of whom 234 had sporadic, 36 familial, and 8 iatrogenic disease; 18 patients with kuru; and 4 patients with Gerstmann-Strüssler-Scheinker syndrome. Patients (459) with chronic gastritis, ulcers, polyposis and different types of gastric cancers were examined by endoscopic fluorescent technique using a special drug based on the sodium salt of fluorescein (F1). Eighty-five percent of gastric cancers showed positive fluorescence. The F1 distribution in the stomach of the rat with induced gastric cancer was examined. In all cases the level of F1 fluorescence in the tumor was higher than in the adjacent normal tissues of the stomach. Thus, all the obtained results confirm the selective accumulation of F1 in tumors of the stomach.

Magnesium (Mg) deficiency in man may result in hypocalcemia, impaired PTH secretion, and low serum concentrations of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25-(OH)2D]. To determine whether these changes are due to selective Mg depletion, we studied 26 normal subjects before and after a 3-week low Mg (less than 1 meq/day) diet. The significance of prostaglandins and other eicosanoids in normal ocular physiology and in ocular disease is not well understood. We have utilized cultured human trabecular cells and an in vivo model of laser-induced inflammation in the rabbit eye to gain information concerning eicosanoid biosynthesis and its regulation in the anterior segment. Further investigations using these experimental paradigms should help to elucidate the physiologic and pathophysiologic roles of eicosanoids in the eye.
