Leishmania are digenetic protozoa which inhabit two highly specific hosts, the sandfly where they grow as motile, flagellated promastigotes in the gut, and the mammalian macrophage where they grow intracellularly as non-flagellated amastigotes. Leishmaniasis is the outcome of an evolutionary 'arms race' between the host's immune system and the parasite's evasion mechanisms which ensure survival and transmission in the population. The spectrum of disease manifestations and severity reflects the interaction between the genome of the host and that of the parasite, and the pathology is caused by a

Coronaviruses pose significant threats to animal and human health, leading to the development of various infectious diseases. It is critical to develop effective vaccines and antiviral medicines to prevent and treat these diseases. The coronavirus genome encodes several types of proteins, including structural, nonstructural, and accessory proteins. Among them, nonstructural protein 13 (NSP13) helicase plays a crucial role in regulating viral replication and the innate immune response of the host. Therefore, it serves as a vital target for the development of anti-coronavirus drugs. This paper p

Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a human-specific pathogen that causes gonorrhea, the second most common sexually transmitted infection worldwide. Disease progression, drug discovery, and basic host-pathogen interactions are studied using different approaches, which rely on models ranging from 2D cell culture to complex 3D tissues and animals. In this review, we discuss the models used in N. gonorrhoeae research. We address both in vivo (animal) and in vitro cell culture models, discussing the pros and cons of each and outlining the recent advancements in the field of three-dimensional tissue models.

Human newborns preferentially attend to self-propelled objects, and three-month-olds expect them to act in a goal-directed manner. Dogs also prefer animate objects, and anticipate human actions to be goal-driven, but it is unclear whether perceiving an object as animate leads to the expectation that it has goals. Here, first dogs observed either (1) a human moving around the room, (2) a robot interacting with a human, (3) a robot displaying self-propelled motion, or (4) a robot moving ambiguously. Next, the human or the robot repeatedly approached one of two objects. Finally, the objects’ plac

Expectations of residual function (and of potential therapeutic outcome) after brain damage are important factors in the selection of rehabilitation programmes. Drawing upon reports of what we call here association learning and memory in humans and animals, it is shown that this type of learning remains intact and may be mediated by subcortical brain structures, despite the often severe cognitive blunting which accompanies diffuse cortical brain damage. In retarded humans the application of association learning-based behaviour modification techniques may lead to the development of an adequate

Osteoarthritis (OA) and osteoporosis (OP) are primary bone and joint diseases affecting the quality of life of old people. The two diseases are different in pathogenesis but are closely associated from each other. Recent clinical guidelines have recommended physical therapies for OA and OP, which have attracted attentions and debates. This is because there is a lack of quality research into this topic. The available studies have used different measurements, and many have not been able to obtain evidence from human research apart from animal experiments. There is a need to undertake both animal

The pork-processing industry has been possibly the fastest growing sector of the food industry in recent years. Specialization, genetic homogenization of the pig population, high density of the breeding population, reduced human-animal interactions, slaughter at a lower age and increased international trade of live animals and pork are parameters that affect, positively or negatively, the emergence of novel pig-borne pathogens, many of which are pig-specific, and many of which have significant zoonotic potential, as observed in recent outbreaks of Nipah virus and Streptococcus suis in Southeas…

Traumatic injuries are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in free-ranging non-human primates (NHPs), often associated with anthropogenic pressures such as habitat loss, urbanization, and interactions with domestic animals. This study characterized some epidemiological, spatial, and pathological patterns of mechanical traumatic injuries in free-ranging non-human primates from anthropogenically altered areas of the Federal District. Of 696 necropsies performed, 215 cases (30.9%) involved mechanical trauma. Black-tufted marmosets (Callithrix penicillata) were the most affected species (90.2

Organ-specific or endocrine autoimmune diseases are complex, polygenic afflictions the penetrance of which is heavily dependent on various environmental influences. Important target tissues are the thyroid, the islets of Langerhans, gastric parietal cells and steroid-producing cells in the adrenal and ovary. The etiology of these diseases remains to be clarified. The pathogenesis is strongly associated with autoimmune phenomena. None of the current treatment approaches provides a cure; rather they represent replacement therapy. An important objective in the treatment of endocrine/organ-specifi

BACKGROUND: Tegumentary leishmaniasis (TL) is a disease of skin and/or mucosal tissues caused by Leishmania parasites. TL patients may concurrently carry other pathogens, which may influence the clinical outcome of TL.
METHODOLOGY AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: This review focuses on the frequency of TL coinfections in human populations, interactions between Leishmania and other pathogens in animal models and human subjects, and implications of TL coinfections for clinical practice. For the purpose of this review, TL is defined as all forms of cutaneous (localised, disseminated, or diffuse) and muco

The number of cancer cases continues to increase worldwide, and unfortunately the main systemic treatments available have numerous of side effects. Ruthenium complexes have shown to be promising chemotherapeutic agents, since they present low toxicity and are more selective for tumor tissues. We report the synthesis, characterization and biological properties of two new ruthenium (II) complexes containing Lapachol and Lawsone as ligands: (1) [Ru(Law)(dppb)(phen)]PF6 and (2) [Ru(Lap)(dppb)(phen)]PF6, where Law = Lawsone, Lap = Lapachol, dppb = 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphine)butane and phen = 1,10-ph

On a global basis, primary liver cancer (PLC) is a very prevalent form of cancer. Wide variation of PLC incidence in different areas of the world suggests the involvement of environmental factors in its etiology. Two major classes of risk factors have been identified. Extensive evidence indicates the importance of infection by the hepatitis B virus as a major risk factor for PLC. Because many organic chemicals induce liver cancer in experimental animals, those to which human exposure is known to occur are also of interest with respect to their possible involvement as risk factors for PLC. Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular parasite belonging to the phylum Apicomplexa that infects all warm-blooded animals, including humans. T. gondii can replicate in every nucleated host cell by orchestrating metabolic interactions to derive crucial nutrients. In this review, we summarize the current status of known metabolic interactions of T. gondii with its host cell and discuss open questions and promising experimental approaches that will allow further dissection of the host-parasite interface and discovery of ways to efficiently target both tachyzoite and bradyzoite forms of T.

The cardiovascular and neuromuscular interactions of verapamil and dantrolene were evaluated in 20 chloralose-anesthetized swine. The animals were randomly divided into three groups. Group I, ten animals, received a bolus intravenous injection of 0.1 mg . kg-1 of verapamil followed by the continuous infusion of 5 micrograms . kg-1 . min-1. This group was then randomly divided into two equal subgroups. Five of these animals, Group Ia, continued to receive the verapamil infusion alone. The other five animals, Group Ib, received dantrolene in incremental doses of 1.0, 3.3, and 5.6 mg . kg-1 while

Patients with metabolic syndrome and liver dysfunction demonstrate elevated levels of succinate in the circulation. Succinate has been causally associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in multiple animal models and via different mechanisms including interaction with succinate receptor-1 (SUCNR-1) in hepatic stellate cells (HSCs), activity of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and others. Although skeletal muscle is a major source of endogenous succinate, here, using a transgenic mouse with muscle-specific ablation of succinate dehydrogenase complex subunit C (SDHC knockout ani

It is necessary to use experimental models in all studies of interactions between a host, its digestive tract microbial flora and the environment because these interactions are complex. The gnotoxenic animal, reared in an isolator as the axenic animal and harbouring a known microbial flora, constitutes either an analytic or mimetic experimental model. The gnotoxenic animal may be considered as an analytic model when used to determine which biotic or abiotic environmental factor of the host-animal plays a role in the intestinal ecosystem. The potential metabolic or immunologic role of a given b

Results of experiments on animals with ablation of different parts of the brain and analysis of published data suggest that the neurophysiological basis of temperaments, according to Hippocrates, of nervous system types, according to Pavlov, and of extra-introversion consists in individual peculiarities of interaction of four structures: the frontal neocortex, the hippocampus, the amygdala and the hypothalamus. Pathological disturbance of this interaction produces the basic varieties of neuroses: hysteria, neurasthenia, psychasthenia and obsessive states. The significance is discussed of indiv
