AIM OF THE STUDY: We set out to develop and evaluate the morbidity of a non-invasive hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) procedure in mice. HIPEC has been shown to improve overall survival in treating ovarian cancer with peritoneal carcinomatosis. However, related complications, toxicity and the lack of randomized trials limits its widespread use. To improve the surgical technique, there is a need for animal models that allow teams to work on large groups without burdensome logistics.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: To develop the model, we first determined optimal HIPEC conditions in 20…

PURPOSE: Peritoneal carcinomatosis or pseudomyxoma peritonei from urachus is a rare form of presentation, often diagnosed at an advanced state of tumor burden. Because of its rarity, little is known about its natural history, prognosis, or optimal treatment. We searched a large international multicenter database of peritoneal surface disease to identify cases of peritoneal carcinomatosis of urachus that were treated with cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) at expert centers. The aim is to improve knowledge and understanding of the disease and stand…

The standard treatment for advanced ovarian cancer consists in complete cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and intravenous combination chemotherapy with a platinum compound and a taxane. Although response rates to initial therapy are high, many patients will recur and die of peritoneal carcinomatosis. The addition of Hyperthermic IntraPEritoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) to the standard therapy aims at increasing survival by reducing peritoneal recurrence. This review describes the survival results of HIPEC at the different time-points of the treatment of ovarian cancer: at upfront CRS, at interval CRS, a…

BACKGROUND: Despite adjuvant systemic chemotherapy after surgical resection in patients with pT4 stage colon cancer, a high percentage of them will develop peritoneal metastases. Intraoperative hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is a treatment option with the goal of preventing metachronous peritoneal metastases. The aim of this study was to report the longer-term outcomes of peritoneal control with the use of intraoperative HIPEC based on mitomycin C after the last enrolled patient of the HIPECT4 trial reached 36 months follow-up.
METHODS: Between November 2015 and March 2021,…

BACKGROUND: Pseudomyxoma Peritonei (PMP) is a mucin producing cancer with appendix as primary site. Cytoreductive Surgery (CRS) combined with hyper-thermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is an established form of therapy known to prolong survival in patients with PMP and peritoneal carcinomatosis. Methods/patients In our case series, we present five cases of PMP with synchronous liver and peritoneal metastasis treated with CRS and HIPEC. It is a very rare condition which needs more research to be able to comment on overall survival.
RESULTS: However, in our study, we found lower age, fe

INTRODUCTION: The long-term prognosis of patients who undergo cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for peritoneal surface malignancies (PSM) varies considerably on the basis of histological and operative factors. While overall survival (OS) estimates are used to inform adjuvant therapy and surveillance strategies, conditional survival may provide more clinically relevant estimates of prognosis by accounting for disease-free time elapsed.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: All patients from 12 academic institutions who underwent CRS ± HIPEC for PSM from 2000 to …

Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) has gained increasing acceptance in clinical practice. Performing CRS and HIPEC laparoscopically represents a challenging and intriguing technical evolution. However, the experiences are limited, and the evidence is low. This retrospective analysis was performed on patients treated with laparoscopic CRS-HIPEC within the Italian Peritoneal Surface Malignancies Oncoteam. Clinical, perioperative, and follow-up data were extracted and collected on prospectively maintained databases. We added a systematic review accor…

BACKGROUND: Mitomycin-C (MMC) is the most commonly used chemotherapeutic agent for hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) after cytoreductive surgery (CRS). However, MMC has a side effect of myelosuppression. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical manifestations and impact of MMC-induced neutropenia after CRS and HIPEC in colorectal cancer patients.
METHODS: A total of 124 colorectal cancer patients who underwent CRS with HIPEC between March 2015 and January 2019 were evaluated. Patients with malignancies of non-colorectal origin, hospital stay longer than 60 days, peritoneal ca…

UNLABELLED: Despite a steady decline in the incidence in recent decades, gastric cancer remains one of the most frequent causes of death from cancer in the world. By the time of diagnosis the tumor process is locally advanced or generalized in nearly 70% of patients that reduces the possibility of radical surgical treatment. Peritoneal carcinomatosis is a one of the main causes of treatment failure. There patients need complex treatment with cytoreductive surgery and intraoperative hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (IHIC) to improve the quality and duration of life. Today in Russia, su…
