A novel 3' untranslated region mutation in the SLC29A3 gene associated with pigmentary hypertrichosis and non-autoimmune insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Pigmentary hypertrichosis and non-autoimmune insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (PHID) is one of the rare H syndrome diseases mainly characterized by hyperpigmentation, hypertrichosis, sensorineural hearing loss, cardiac complications, developmental delay, and diabetes mellitus (DM). Mutations in the coding regions of the SLC29A3 gene that encodes for an equilibrative nucleoside transporter (ENT3) have been reported to cause the phenotypic spectrum of the H syndrome. Disease-causing mutations in the untranslated regions (UTRs) of the SLC29A3 gene have not been previously described…

Hemimaxillofacial dysplasia: a newly recognized disorder of facial asymmetry, hypertrichosis of the facial skin, unilateral enlargement of the maxilla, and hypoplastic teeth in two patients.

Hemimaxillofacial dysplasia is a newly recognized disorder consisting of unilateral enlargement of the maxillary alveolar bone and the gingiva associated with hypoplastic teeth, facial asymmetry, and hypertrichosis of the facial skin on the ipsilateral side. The overall pattern of abnormalities in both of the patients presented in this article differs significantly from previously reported types of maxillofacial asymmetry. The occurrence of the same abnormalities in two or more unrelated patients suggests, but does not prove, that pathogenesis in both cases may be the same. The present disorde…

Happle-Tinschert syndrome. Segmentally arranged basaloid follicular hamartomas, linear atrophoderma with hypo- and hyperpigmentation, enamel defects, ipsilateral hypertrichosis, and skeletal and cerebral anomalies.

Recently, Happle and Tinschert [Acta Derm Venereol 2008;88:382-387] described the case of a multisystem birth defect with segmentally arranged basaloid follicular hamartomas associated with extracutaneous defects in the form of short leg, polydactyly and hypoplastic teeth. The authors presented a comprehensive overview of 8 similar cases reported under various designations, and provided evidence that this syndrome includes various additional defects of the bones, teeth and brain. Here, a further typical case is reported, and it is emphasized that this phenotype should no longer be categorized

[Contribution to the etiologic diagnosis of hypertrichosis and hirsutism of functional origin in women during active genital life by statistical study of observations (author's transl)].

After a recall of the etiologies of hypertrichosis and hirsutism, a method of diagnosis limited to functional pathological cases, was established. Having 31 complete case reports of functional hirsutism or hypertrichosis in women whose diagnosis--ovarian dystrophy or corticosuprarenal hyperplasia--was confirmed, the authors established a decision procedure based on the confrontation of two criteria obtained with a discriminant analysis program. These criteria included a clinical examination (intensity and localization of pilosity) and the effect of dexamethasone blockade on two plasmatic stero…

Influence of Extended Photoperiod Using Blue Light Masks on Hypertrichosis, Coat Condition and General Health Parameters in Horses with Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction.

Fifty-two horses aged >15 years, diagnosed with pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID), and displaying hypertrichosis were recruited via an online survey of PPID horse owners. From mid-December, group T (n = 29) wore Equilume® light masks extending photoperiod to 15 h daily, while group C1 (n = 23) remained under natural photoperiod. As 85% (44/52) of recruited study horses received pergolide medication, a second unmedicated PPID research herd (C2; n = 17) was recruited and remained under natural photoperiod. Hair coat samples, shedding and body condition scores were collected monthly by…

Depigmented hypertrichosis following Blaschko's lines associated with cerebral and ocular malformations: a new neurocutaneous, autosomal lethal gene syndrome from the group of epidermal naevus syndromes?

The lines of Blaschko represent one of the cutaneous patterns of mosaicism followed by various skin disorders. Developmental abnormalities affecting other tissues derived from the embryonic ectoderm and mesoderm are occasionally associated. We describe a 30-year-old man with depigmented, bilateral hypertrichosis and dilated follicular orifices following Blaschko's lines associated with cerebral and ocular malformations. The findings suggest a previously unreported neurocutaneous, autosomal lethal gene syndrome from the group of epidermal naevus syndromes.

Pigmentary hypertrichosis and non-autoimmune insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (PHID) syndrome is associated with severe chronic inflammation and cardiomyopathy, and represents a new monogenic autoinflammatory syndrome.

Mutations in SLC29A3 lead to pigmentary hypertrichosis and non-autoimmune insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (PHID) and H syndromes, familial Rosai-Dorfman disease, and histiocytosis-lymphadenopathy plus syndrome. We report a new association of PHID syndrome with severe systemic inflammation, scleroderma-like changes, and cardiomyopathy. A 12-year-old girl with PHID syndrome presented with shortness of breath, hepatosplenomegaly, and raised erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein. An echocardiogram showed biventricular myocardial hypertrophy, and cardiac magnetic resonance imagi…

Ambras syndrome: A rare case report.

Congenital generalized hypertrichosis associated with gingival hyperplasia are rare cases published in literature. The frequency incidence of generalized congenital hypertrichosis is about one to billions of people. Hypertrichosis and gingival hyperplasia are termed as Ambras syndrome (AS), which can be noticed at birth or soon after. Here, is a rare case report of 4-year-old male child who presented with generalized hypertrichosis with gingival fibromatosis and dysmorphic facial features.

Hairy elbows.

Hairy elbows (hypertrichosis cubiti) represent an uncommon variety of localized hypertrichosis not associated with significant medical problems. This hypertrichosis occurs in young children and may occur sporadically or possibly be genetically determined. The process is of cosmetic concern alone, and reassuring the parents is the only therapy necessary.

Becker nevus on the lower limb: case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Becker nevus is a hamartoma with brown hyperpigmentation and hypertrichosis that usually affects young males. It has a predilection for the upper half of the trunk and proximal upper extremity. OBJECTIVE: This is a case report of a 38-year-old male with a Becker nevus without hypertrichosis on the lower limb and a review of the literature. RESULTS: Including our case report, 12 cases of Becker nevus on the lower limb were identified in the English literature (8 males and 4 females). It has never been reported below the knee. In males, the lesion was not associated with other anom…
