CXR-LLaVA: a multimodal large language model for interpreting chest X-ray images.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop an open-source multimodal large language model (CXR-LLaVA) for interpreting chest X-ray images (CXRs), leveraging recent advances in large language models (LLMs) to potentially replicate the image interpretation skills of human radiologists. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For training, we collected 592,580 publicly available CXRs, of which 374,881 had labels for certain radiographic abnormalities (Dataset 1) and 217,699 provided free-text radiology reports (Dataset 2). After pre-training a vision transformer with Dataset 1, we integrated it with an LLM influence

A Novel Framework for Tongue Feature Extraction Framework Based on Sublingual Vein Segmentation.

The features of the sublingual veins, including swelling, varicose patterns, and cyanosis, are pivotal in differentiating symptoms and selecting treatments in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) tongue diagnosis. These features serve as a crucial reflection of the human blood circulation status. Nevertheless, the automatic and precise extraction of sublingual vein features remains a formidable challenge, constrained by the scarcity of datasets for sublingual images and the interference of noise from non-tongue and non-sublingual vein elements. In this paper, we present an innovative tongue feat

Tracking spatial temporal details in ultrasound long video via wavelet analysis and memory bank.

Medical ultrasound videos are widely used for medical inspections, disease diagnosis and surgical planning. High-fidelity lesion area and target organ segmentation constitutes a key component of the computer-assisted surgery workflow. The low contrast levels and noisy backgrounds of ultrasound videos cause missegmentation of organ boundary, which may lead to small object losses and increase boundary segmentation errors. Object tracking in long videos also remains a significant research challenge. To overcome these challenges, we propose a memory bank-based wavelet filtering and fusion network,

Towards long-tailed, multi-label disease classification from chest X-ray: Overview of the CXR-LT challenge.

Many real-world image recognition problems, such as diagnostic medical imaging exams, are "long-tailed" - there are a few common findings followed by many more relatively rare conditions. In chest radiography, diagnosis is both a long-tailed and multi-label problem, as patients often present with multiple findings simultaneously. While researchers have begun to study the problem of long-tailed learning in medical image recognition, few have studied the interaction of label imbalance and label co-occurrence posed by long-tailed, multi-label disease classification. To engage with the research co

FBENet: Feature-Level Boosting Ensemble Network for Hashimoto's Thyroiditis Ultrasound Image Classification.

Distinguishing Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) lesions from ordinary thyroid tissues is difficult with ultrasound images. Challenges in achieving high performance of HT ultrasound image classification include the low resolution, blurred features and large area of irrelevant noise. To address these problems, we propose a Feature-level Boosting Ensemble Network (FBENet) for HT ultrasound image classification. Specifically, to capture the features of suspicious HT lesions efficiently, an Ensemble Feature Boosting Module (EFBM) is introduced into the feature-level ensemble to boost the blurred featur

Multi-model deep learning approach for segmentation of teeth and periapical lesions on pantomographs.

INTRODUCTION: The fields of medicine and dentistry are beginning to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) in diagnostics. This may reduce subjectivity and improve the accuracy of diagnoses and treatment planning. Current evidence on pathosis detection on pantomographs (PGs) indicates the presence or absence of disease in the entire radiographic image, with little evidence of the relation of periapical pathosis to the causative tooth. OBJECTIVE: To develop a deep learning (DL) AI model for the segmentation of periapical pathosis and its relation to teeth on PGs. METHOD: 250 PGs were manually

Color masking improves classification of celiac disease in videocapsule endoscopy images.

BACKGROUND: Videocapsule endoscopy images are useful to detect pathologic alterations, including villous atrophy, in the small intestinal mucosa, which is helpful for diagnosing celiac disease. In prior work, quantitative videocapsule analysis was found useful to classify celiac versus control images. However, the effect of dark/extraneous substances on classification efficacy requires remediation. METHOD: For quantitative analysis, data from the Medtronic SB2 and SB3 systems were pooled. Videocapsule images of the distal duodenum/proximal jejunum were acquired from 13 celiac and 13 control p

High-resolution, label-free two-photon imaging of diseased human corneas.

The diagnosis of corneal diseases may be improved by monitoring the metabolism of cells and the structural organization of the stroma using two-photon imaging (TPI). We used TPI to assess the differences between nonpathological (NP) human corneas and corneas diagnosed with either keratoconus, Acanthamoeba keratitis, or stromal corneal scars. Images were acquired using a custom-built five-dimensional laser-scanning microscope with a broadband sub-15 femtosecond near-infrared pulsed excitation laser and a 16-channel photomultiplier tube detector in combination with a time-correlated single photo

Evaluation of hepatic fibrosis: a review from the society of abdominal radiology disease focus panel.

Hepatic fibrosis is potentially reversible; however early diagnosis is necessary for treatment in order to halt progression to cirrhosis and development of complications including portal hypertension and hepatocellular carcinoma. Morphologic signs of cirrhosis on ultrasound (US), computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) alone are unreliable and are seen with more advanced disease. Newer imaging techniques to diagnose liver fibrosis are reliable and accurate, and include magnetic resonance elastography and US elastography (one-dimensional transient elastography and point s

A Machine Learning Ensemble Classifier for Early Prediction of Diabetic Retinopathy.

The main complication of diabetes is Diabetic retinopathy (DR), retinal vascular disease and it leads to the blindness. Regular screening for early DR disease detection is considered as an intensive labor and resource oriented task. Therefore, automatic detection of DR diseases is performed only by using the computational technique is the great solution. An automatic method is more reliable to determine the presence of an abnormality in Fundus images (FI) but, the classification process is poorly performed. Recently, few research works have been designed for analyzing texture discrimination ca

Mesh-free based variational level set evolution for breast region segmentation and abnormality detection using mammograms.

Automatic segmentation of abnormal region is a crucial task in computer-aided detection system using mammograms. In this work, an automatic abnormality detection algorithm using mammographic images is proposed. In the preprocessing step, partial differential equation-based variational level set method is used for breast region extraction. The evolution of the level set method is done by applying mesh-free-based radial basis function (RBF). The limitation of mesh-based approach is removed by using mesh-free-based RBF method. The evolution of variational level set function is also done by mesh-b

Localized Energy-Based Normalization of Medical Images: Application to Chest Radiography.

Automated quantitative analysis systems for medical images often lack the capability to successfully process images from multiple sources. Normalization of such images prior to further analysis is a possible solution to this limitation. This work presents a general method to normalize medical images and thoroughly investigates its effectiveness for chest radiography (CXR). The method starts with an energy decomposition of the image in different bands. Next, each band's localized energy is scaled to a reference value and the image is reconstructed. We investigate iterative and local application

Estimating the mutual information between bilateral breast in thermograms using nonparametric windows.

Comparison between contra lateral breast images is one of the effective methods in breast cancer detection. Asymmetric temperature distribution can be an indicator of abnormality. The mutual information is a good measure of nonlinear correlation. It is a measure that captures linear and nonlinear dependencies, without requiring the specification of any kind of model of dependence. Therefore, it is suitable for our abnormality indicator. Although nonparametric windows is a numerically expensive technique but it is accurate. The reason is that nonparametric windows incorporate an interpolation m

Changes of human skin in subepidermal wound healing process.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The wound healing process involves unexplained mechanisms. An aberration in this process is known to cause dermal disorders such as keloid or hypertrophic scars, but the mechanism by which these scars are formed remains to be elucidated. Here we examined the usefulness of a non-invasive optical imaging device to clarify mechanisms of wound healing and of scar formation. METHODS: An 8 mm experimental wound was made in the forearms of six subjects by a suction blister method. To observe chronological changes associated with wound healing, horizontal cross-sectional images we

The application of fractal analysis to mammographic tissue classification.

As a first step in determining the efficacy of using computers to assist in diagnosis of medical images, an investigation has been conducted which utilizes the patterns, or textures, in the images. To be of value, any computer scheme must be able to recognize and differentiate the various patterns. An obvious example of this in mammography is the recognition of tumorous tissue and non-malignant abnormal tissue from normal parenchymal tissue. We have developed a pattern recognition technique which uses features derived from the fractal nature of the image. Further, we are able to develop mathem
