Nocardia asteroides infection in horses: a review.

From 1965 to 1983, Nocardia asteroides infection was diagnosed in 16 horses at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, University of California, Davis. In 2 of the cases, the infection was traumatic in origin and local in extent; the horses recovered without relevant antimicrobial therapy. Fourteen horses had pulmonary or disseminated infections that ended fatally. All 14 had various degrees of immunosuppression. Of these, 8 were Arabian foals with combined immunodeficiency disease and 3 were aged horses with hyperadrenocorticism secondary to ACTH-secreting pituitary tumors. Of the other 3,

[Hypoplasia of the thymus gland in children].

Morphological changes of the thymus, tonsils, lymph nodes, spleen, and other organs in two observations of severe combined insufficiency (SCIN) in infants of the first year of life are described. In both cases there was hypoplasia of the thymus with the lack or occasional thymic bodies and poor content of thymocytes in the lobules. In one infant, hypoplasia of the thymus was combined with intestinal angiomatosis which suggested the syndrome of ataxia-teleangiectasia. In the other infant, SCIN was associated with severe granulocytopenia of the Kostman type. In this case epithelial cells of the

Induction of E-rosette-promoting factor in human plasma by levamisole: an assessment in a patient with partial DiGeorge syndrome.

A male infant with partial DiGeorge syndrome responded to weekly administration of levamisole (2.5 mg/kg of body weight) with an increase of circulating E-rosette-forming T cells. Thymic hormone activity in plasma appeared to be elevated to a near-normal level of 11.6 ng thymopoietin equivalent/ml after levamisole administration. The in vitro incubation studies indicated that levamisole by itself had no E-rosette-promoting ability, but a dialysable and relatively heat-stable plasma factor induced by levamisole both in the patient and in healthy individuals had E-rosette-promoting activity for

Familial third and fourth pharyngeal pouch syndrome with truncus arteriosus: DiGeorge syndrome.

A family is presented in which three of four siblings had truncus arteriosus and other anomalies compatible with the third and fourth pharyngeal pouch syndrome (DiGeorge syndrome). The syndrome is uncommon and most of the reported cases have been solitary. In this family an autosomal recessive inheritance is possible.

[Association between pathological olfaction, immunological abnormalities and predisposition to substance use].

OBJECTIVE: To reveal olfactory parameters of substance addiction formation through evaluation of predictive capability of olfactometry combined with laboratory-immunological methods. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Authors examined 156 people of both sexes aged 18-25 years. Three comparison groups with different attitudes towards psychoactive substances were formed as follows: people who do not use psychoactive substances (controls), episodic consumers (group at risk) and people with dependence syndrome. RESULTS: The occurrence of olfactory abnormalities in the anamnesis has immunological, psychologic

Immune Defect in Adults With Down Syndrome: Insights Into a Complex Issue.

Children with Down syndrome (DS) suffer from recurrent respiratory infections, which represent the leading cause of mortality during childhood. This susceptibility to infections is usually considered multifactorial and related to both impaired immune function and non-immunological factors. Infections are also one of the top causes of death in DS at adulthood. DS is considered an immunodeficiency with syndromic features by some researchers because of this high rate of infection and the immunological characteristics observed in children with DS. Little is known about the immune status of adult p

Development of hematopoietic stem cell gene therapy for Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome.

Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome (WAS) is a complex primary immunodeficiency disorder associated with microthrombocytopenia, autoinnmunity and susceptibility to malignant lymphoma. At the molecular level, this rare disorder is caused by mutations in the gene encoding the Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein (WASP). WASP is a cytosolic adaptor protein mediating the rearrangement of the actin cytoskeleton upon surface receptor signaling. Allogenic hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) transplantation represents a curative approach but remains problematic in light of severe risks and side effects. Recently, HSC gene

Gene therapy approaches for inborn errors of immunity: from bench to bedside.

INTRODUCTION: Inborn errors of immunity (IEI) are rare genetic defects that disrupt immune function, often resulting in life-threatening infections, malignancies, and immune dysregulation. Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), a curative option for some diagnoses, is limited by donor availability and the risks of graft-versus-host disease. This review explores the 30-year evolution of autologous gene therapy as a vital alternative to allogeneic HSCT for IEIs. AREAS COVERED: Literature search using PubMed for gene therapy for IEI in the last 20 years. We trace the transiti

Current experience with manual push subcutaneous immunoglobulin (SCIg) in patients with immune deficiencies.

Immunoglobulin G replacement therapy prevents infections in patients with antibody deficiencies. Subcutaneous immunoglobulin (SCIg) has typically been administered via infusion pump, but the manual push technique offers a simple, convenient alternative method. The manual push technique is efficacious, well tolerated, quick to administer, offers increased dosing flexibility, and does not rely on a pump. Having various administration options available to patients provides greater treatment satisfaction and feelings of self-empowerment, which may improve compliance. Currently available literature

Curation of gene-disease relationships in primary antibody deficiencies using the ClinGen validation framework.

BACKGROUND: The Clinical Genome Resource (ClinGen) is an international collaborative effort among scientists and clinicians, diagnostic and research laboratories, and the patient community. Using a standardized framework, ClinGen has established guidelines to classify gene-disease relationships as definitive, strong, moderate, and limited on the basis of available scientific and clinical evidence. When the genetic and functional evidence for a gene-disease relationship has conflicting interpretations or contradictory evidence, they can be disputed or refuted. OBJECTIVE: We assessed genes rela

Intrathymic T-cell ontogeny: Crossroad between immune competence and tolerance.

The weak balance between immune competence and immune tolerance is reflected in the coexistence, in the same inborn error of immunity, of susceptibility to infections and predisposition to develop immune dysregulatory features. Different mechanisms are implicated in the pathogenesis of immunodeficiency and autoimmunity. The thymus plays a crucial role in the development of both immune tolerance and immune competence. Alterations of thymus development and function may lead to inborn errors of immunity presenting with a wide spectrum of dysregulation of the immune system ranging from severely de

Good's Syndrome-A Rare Cause of Acquired Adult Immunodeficiency: A Case Report.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-negative acquired adult immunodeficiency diseases are rare and relatively difficult to diagnose and treat. Good's syndrome is one such rare immunodeficiency syndrome occurring in middle to late adulthood. It is an association of combined B-cell and T-cell immunodeficiency along with hypogammaglobulinemia with a background of thymoma. Here, we describe a case of a 57-year-old male who presented to us with recurrent streptococcal pneumonia. He had a past history of an operated thymoma, cytomegalovirus retinitis, and pure red cell aplasia (PRCA). Evaluation reve

Primary and secondary defects of the thymus.

The thymus is the primary site of T-cell development, enabling generation, and selection of a diverse repertoire of T cells that recognize non-self, whilst remaining tolerant to self- antigens. Severe congenital disorders of thymic development (athymia) can be fatal if left untreated due to infections, and thymic tissue implantation is the only cure. While newborn screening for severe combined immune deficiency has allowed improved detection at birth of congenital athymia, thymic disorders acquired later in life are still underrecognized and assessing the quality of thymic function in such con
