Molecular markers for the study of streptococcal epidemiology.

Diseases caused by Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A streptococcus, GAS) range from superficial infections such as pharyngitis and impetigo to potentially fatal rheumatic heart disease and invasive disease. Studies spanning emm-typing surveillance to population genomics are providing new insights into the epidemiology, pathogenesis, and biology of this organism. Such studies have demonstrated the differences that exist in the epidemiology of streptococcal disease between developing and developed nations. In developing nations, where streptococcal disease is endemic, the diversity of GAS emm-type…

Incidence of childhood dermatosis in India.

The incidence ofdermatologic conditions in the pediatric age group presents a pattern that often differs from that in adults; this is import … borns are transient. The most common dermatoses found were of infectious etiology (38.43%) in which impetigo (11.13%) and pyoderma (8.9%) were the most common. In infectious etiology, incidence of scabies was 5.32%. Viral warts were the most common viral infections followed by molluscum contagiosum. Incidence of eczema, atopic dermatitis, and sweat gland d …

Skin microflora and bacterial infections of the skin.

The skin is a milieu for controlled bacterial growth. Skin supports the growth of commensal bacteria, which protect the host from pathogenic … growth in these privileged niches. Epidermal infections caused by S. aureus and S. pyogenes include impetigo and ecthyma. Dermal infections consist of erysipelas, cellulitis, and necrotizing fasciitis. The pilosebaceous unit is involved in folliculitis, furunculosis, and carbunculosis. Moreover, S. aureus and S. pyogenes produce toxins that may elicit a su …

[Neonatal hyperparathyroidism secondary to unknown maternal hypoparathyroidism].

UNLABELLED: Vitamin D or its analogue (calcitriol) is an effective treatment for hypoparathyroidism during pregnancy. Normal babies are delivered and very few cases of associated neonatal hyperparathyroidism are reported. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a baby born to a mother suffering unknown hypoparathyroidism. He was delivered prematurely by cesarean section for birth asphyxia. His mother had had recurrent bouts of impetigo herpetiformis for several months. Severe demineralization associated with decreased plasma calcium level were observed at birth. The PTH level was very high (955 ng…

Necrotizing soft-tissue infections.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare and often fatal soft-tissue infection involving the superficial fascial layers of the extremities, abdomen, or perineum. Necrotizing fasciitis typically begins with trauma; however, the inciting event may be as seemingly innocuous as a simple contusion, minor burn, or insect bite. Differentiating necrotizing infections from common soft-tissue infections, such as cellulitis and impetigo, is both challenging and critically important. A high degree of suspicion may be the most important aid in early diagnosis. Prompt diagnosis is imperative because necrotizing infe…

The in vitro antibacterial effect of permethrin and formaldehyde on Staphylococcus aureus.

Antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus are a threat to human health, and effective treatment options against them are needed. This study aimed to determine whether the insecticide permethrin was capable of inhibiting the growth of S. aureus or if some other component of a permethrin cream was responsible for a decrease in scabies associated bacterial infection previously observed. Ten S. aureus strains were grown in the presence of permethrin and formaldehyde both alone and in combination with percent inhibition determined by viable counts.

Spinal epidural abscess with a rapid course in young healthy infantry recruits with multiple skin lacerations.

In recent years, there has been high prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) infection among soldiers in the Israeli military, with … e young men developed SEA through extension of MSSA infection to proximal skin and soft tissue from impetigo secondary to skin scratches sustained during "basic" training. All presented with mild nuchal rigidity and severe persistent unremitting lancinating radicular pain. Although healthy at baseline, they had a severe, rapidly progressive course. Followi …

Nasal manifestations of self-destructive behaviour.

Self-destructive behaviour is prevalent in a variety of different psychiatric disorders. Most common manifestations are self-inflicted cuts to the skin, especially the skin of the forearms. Manifestations of self-destructive behaviour involving the nasal area are rather rare. A series of cases is presented in which nasal diseases were initially misinterpreted, but could finally be identified as factitious disorders. Presented symptoms were foreign body insertions, hemodynamically relevant epistaxis and impetiginous inflammations of the paravestibular skin of the nose. Factitious disorders of t

Classification of diaper dermatitis: an overview.

Several types of diaper dermatitis are discussed: generic diaper dermatitis is most common and involves a simple erythema and mild scaling o … 1-2 weeks, lesions develop on the scalp, cheeks, arms, legs, and intertriginous parts of the body. Impetigo is common in the diaper area, particularly in the first 6 months of life and during the warmer summer season. The lesions are usually bullous and represent infection by Staphylococcus aureus. Folliculitis appears as small, perifollicular erythematou …
