A bacterial isolate (G161) with high Cr(VI)-reducing capacity was isolated from Cr(VI)-contaminated soil and identified as Leucobacter sp. on the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. The isolate was a Gram-positive, aerobic rod. The hexavalent chromate-reducing capability of the isolate was investigated under three conditions of oxygen stress. Prion diseases, which are mostly represented in humans by Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, are transmissible neurodegenerative disorders characterized by vacuolization and neuronal loss, as well as by the accumulation of an abnormal form of the prion protein. In this study, we investigate systematically the role played by the reproductive number (the number of secondary infections generated by an infectious individual in a population of susceptibles) on single group populations models of the spread of HIV/AIDS. Following intranasal inoculation of mice, Rhizomucor pusillus spores are gradually cleared from the lung, with the clearance complete at 30 days. The use of protective monoclonal antibodies has enabled us to demonstrate antigenic community between a 38-kDa schistosomula surface molecule and a 115-kDa component derived from adult worms. Injection of adult worms in rats also led to the production of antibodies specific for the 38-kDa antigen, suggesting that the 115-kDa adult worm molecule could act as an inducer of the protective immune response raised against young invading parasites.

The influence of incubation temperature (37, 30 and 22 degrees C) on antibiotic susceptibility, beta-lactamase activity and growth characteristics was studied on 43 unselected strains of Y. enterocolitica (Serovar O:3 and O:9) freshly isolated from cliical specimens. Chick embryos were infected with Naegleria fowleri which was initially isolated from an ultimately fatal human case. Following inoculation of equivalent numbers of amebae on the chorioallantoic membrane, younger embryos died earlier than older embryos infected at the same time. Incubation of infected embryos at 32 degrees C prolonged survival only slightly in comparison with those at 37 degrees C. N. fowleri maintained for more than 25 serial passages in chick embryos retained infectivity for mice and the ability to convert to the biflagellate form in vitro.
