Dengue is a worldwide condition spread throughout the tropical and subtropical zones between 30 degrees north and 40 degrees south. Despite remarkable decline in the number of poliomyelitis cases, the dream of polio eradication in India remains elusive. This is despite considerable effort and expenditure for well over a decade. Various reasons have been cited for this and interventions implemented accordingly. None of these seem to have borne fruit. It is appropriate to have a relook at the polio eradication strategies in order to learn from past errors and determine a feasible solution to achieve the goal. This article examines important tissues that hamper the eradication effort and proposes a way forward.

AIM: To examine the naturalistic course of bipolar disorder in a rural, community-based, partially treated cohort.
METHODS: All patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder during an epidemiological survey (n=34) in a rural area in India were followed longitudinally using standardized instruments, and the life-chart method used to examine their course.

A retrospective analysis of 252 cases of vesicovaginal fistulae was done to analyse its etio-pathology and management in an Indian population. Hydatid disease usually affects liver and lungs, but may affect any organ, posing a diagnostic and therapeutic dilemma. We analysed 110 patients with hydatid cyst over 21 years in our general surgical unit, which included 24 cases in unusual sites. The spleen was the most common, followed by skin and soft tissues.

CONCLUSIONS: The majority of patients with GBC in India have advanced unresectable disease. Detection of GBC at an early stage is incidental and rare but is associated with long-term survival. Radical surgery, when feasible, is the only option for achieving long-term survival.

G6PD deficiency has been reported from India more than 30 years ago and about 13 variants have been characterized biochemically. Here, we report the results of an epidemiological study investigating G6PD deficiency and the mutations among 14 heterogenous populations of India. Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) leads to significant morbidity due to continued disease activity and drug toxicity. Retrospective analysis of patients with JRA seen at a tertiary care hospital between 1990-2000 was done.
