We define "dual fingerprint reagents" as chemical formulations that produce with latent fingerprints in one stage impressions that are both colored and fluorescent. Solutions containing ninhydrin and group IIb metal salts appear to be true dual reagents. Application of these formulations to latent fingerprints on paper is as efficient as the two-step process beginning with ninhydrin and followed by treatment with metal salt. Neat chlorosulfonic acid reacts with anhydrous sodium tungstate to give tungstate sulfuric acid (TSA), a new dibasic inorganic solid acid in which two sulfuric acid molecules connect to a tungstate moiety via a covalent bond. A variety of oximes were oxidized to their parent carbonyl compounds under mild conditions with excellent yields in short times by a heterogeneous wet TSA/KMnO4 in dichloromethane system.

In the present study PCR was applied to detect leptospires in human urine. Several approaches for sample processing were evaluated to optimize the detection of leptospires in urine mixed with this bacterium. Furthermore, some changes in the composition of the reaction mix were studied. We report herein the first determination of the absolute configuration of the annonaceous butenolides by a NMR method. This technique uses a chiral solvating agent (CSA), the so-called Pirkle's reagent, at low temperature and low concentration, allowing one to apply this method to other natural products as well. The first time synthesis of 7alpha- and 11beta-nitrile estradiol is described. Reaction of 7alpha-cyano-19-nortestosterone with copper(II)bromide in acetonitrile at room temperature results in aromatization of the A-ring. Treatment of 11beta-cyano-19-nortestosterone-17-one under similar condition does not induce A-ring aromatization but rather results in bromination at the 2beta-position. However A-ring aromatized products are obtained when the latter compound is treated with Ac2O-Py-AcOCl, NBS and HCl.

The support of a delicate reagent on a solid matrix allows for better and safer handling of the reagent itself. Because we had an interest in silicon-based supported reagents(1) we turned our attention to a polymer-supported trialkylsilyl cyanide and trialkylsilyl azide starting from a commercially available trialkylsilane resin. An extremely potent mutagen, 3-chloro-4(dichloromethyl)-5-hydroxy-2(5H)-furanone (MX) is commonly present in chlorinated drinking water. Due to its high mutagenic activity and according to World Health Organization guidelines its concentration should be controlled in drinking waters. Determination of MX is difficult due to ppt levels at which the compound usually exists in drinking waters. Derivatization of MX with 2-propanol is presented as a method which significantly lowers the GC-MS detection level compared to other alcohol derivatization agents.

Hydroxocobalamin (OHCo) and cyanocobalamin (CNCo) are determined directly in biological media, without extraction, by using first derivative spectrophotometry. We diluted 200 mL of plasma, urine, or standards with 1.8 mL of pH 6 buffer (boric acid, potassium dihydrogen orthophosphate, and potassium hydroxide). The first derivative spectra of the dilutions were plotted between 320 and 400 nm. At the exact zero-crossing point for hydroxocobalamin, the derivative values of cyanocobalamin concentration were determined. Supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) has been investigated for the separation of a pair of beta-ketonate chromium compounds and a thermally labile organochromium dimer. A limited comparison between flame ionization detection (FID) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometric (ICP-MS) detection of these compounds is presented. The beta-ketonate complexes were observed with both detectors, while the thermally labile dimer was not observed with ICP-MS detection. Detection limits for these compounds with ICP-MS were in the range of 0.9 to 3 pg with FID giving values between 10 and 250 pg.
