Progression of Vasculopathy in Young Individuals with Turner Syndrome.

Vasculopathy has been identified in young individuals with Turner syndrome (TS). No studies in young individuals with TS have investigated whether this vasculopathy progresses over time. The objective of this study is to describe the changes in vasculopathy over time in a cohort of young individuals with TS. Repeat ultrasound and SphygmoCor CPV® (AtCor Medical) measurements of carotid thickness and peripheral arterial stiffness were performed. Vascular measurements were compared at baseline and follow-up. Follow-up measurements were also compared to historical lean (L) and obese (O) age-, race

The oropharyngeal microbiome is altered in individuals with schizophrenia and mania.

It is being increasingly recognized that human mucosal surfaces are not sterile but are colonized with microorganisms collectively known as the microbiome. The microbiome can alter brain functioning in humans and animals by way of a series of interactions operative in the brain-immune-gut interactome. We characterized the oropharyngeal microbiome in 316 individuals, including 121 with schizophrenia, 62 with mania, 48 with major depressive disorder, and 85 controls without a psychiatric disorder. We found that the oropharyngeal microflora of individuals with schizophrenia and individuals with m

Individual sensitivity to growth hormone replacement in adults.

The metabolic actions of growth hormone (GH) last a lifetime and involve several physiological functions associated with the control of body composition, energy metabolism, water regulation, immune response, cardiovascular performance, physical and mental work. Adult patients with GH deficiency (GHD) present a constellation of clinical findings, which include increased total and visceral body fat, low bone and muscle mass, reduced muscle strength, impaired anaerobic physical capacity, unfavorable cardiovascular profile, and poor quality of life. Recombinant human GH (rhGH) therapy has been pro

The multimodality neuroimage findings in individuals with Tourette syndrome.

Chronic tic disorder and Gilles de la Tourette syndrome are very common childhood-onset diseases. However, the pathophysiology underlying these disorders is not yet clear and most studies focus on the disinhibition of the cortico-striatal-thalamo-cortical circuit. Although dysfunction of this circuit is possible, routine clinical neuroimaging studies such as T1-weighted or T2-weighted MRI usually reveal normal results. Therefore, special neuroimaging techniques may be needed to investigate the possible microstructural or functional changes in the brain. Previous structural studies, such as tho

Holographic virtual staining of individual biological cells.

Many medical and biological protocols for analyzing individual biological cells involve morphological evaluation based on cell staining, designed to enhance imaging contrast and enable clinicians and biologists to differentiate between various cell organelles. However, cell staining is not always allowed in certain medical procedures. In other cases, staining may be time-consuming or expensive to implement. Staining protocols may be operator-sensitive, and hence may lead to varying analytical results, as well as cause artificial imaging artifacts or false heterogeneity. We present a deep-learn

Tongue function and swallowing in individuals with temporomandibular disorders.

BACKGROUND: The tongue participates in the oral phase of swallowing by pushing the food bolus toward the oropharynx. This relationship between tongue function and swallowing is little addressed addressed in individuals with temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD). OBJECTIVE: To analyze the association of functional tongue conditions on swallowing in individuals with TMD. METHODOLOGY: After approval by the Institutional Review Board, the study was conducted on 30 individuals of both sexes, aged 18 to 28 years, with TMD, and not treated for the disorder. Tongue function was assessed as to the mobi

Individual preferences for COVID-19 vaccination in China.

BACKGROUND: Vaccinations are an effective choice to stop disease outbreaks, including COVID-19. There is little research on individuals' COVID-19 vaccination decision-making. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine individual preferences for COVID-19 vaccinations in China, and to assess the factors influencing vaccination decision-making to facilitate vaccination coverage. METHODS: A D-efficient discrete choice experiment was conducted across six Chinese provinces selected by the stratified random sampling method. Vaccine choice sets were constructed using seven attributes: vaccine effectiveness, s

Exome Sequencing in Individuals with Isolated Biliary Atresia.

Biliary atresia (BA) is a severe pediatric liver disease resulting in necroinflammatory obliteration of the extrahepatic biliary tree. BA presents within the first few months of life as either an isolated finding or with additional syndromic features. The etiology of isolated BA is unknown, with evidence for infectious, environmental, and genetic risk factors described. However, to date, there are no definitive causal genes identified for isolated BA in humans, and the question of whether single gene defects play a major role remains open. We performed exome-sequencing in 101 North American pa

Identification of an individual with a SYGNAP1 pathogenic mutation in India.

Exome sequencing is a prominent tool to identify novel and deleterious mutations which could be non-sense, frameshift, and canonical splice-site mutations in a specific gene. De novo mutations in SYNGAP1, which codes for synaptic RAS-GTPase activating the protein, causes Intellectual disability (ID) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). SYNGAP1 related ASD/ID is one of the rare diseases that are detrimental to the healthy neuronal developmental and disrupts the global development of a child. We report the first SYNGAP1 heterozygous patient from Indian cohort. We report a case of a child of 2-yea

Neurocognitive Characteristics of Individuals with Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a systems-based brain-gut axis disorder. Cognitive functions reflect central affective and attentional processes that are driven by genetic and epigenetic influences and effect complex brain-gut interactions. These interactions include stress-induced changes in hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and autonomic nervous system, remodelling of the immune system, and alterations in microbiota composition. This review summarises current neurocognitive findings on patients with IBS. 13 studies of neurocognition in IBS patients were identified from PubMed, Ovid MEDLI

Contraception Care for Transmasculine Individuals on Testosterone Therapy.

Contraception and fertility-associated advisement is needed for any individual with a uterus who is engaging in sexual activity with reproductive potential. As greater awareness spreads regarding the health care needs of transgender, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming individuals, the research on evidence-based care for these populations lags behind. Many clinicians may not be well versed in the best practices to support the sexual and reproductive well-being of individuals who are taking gender-affirming hormone therapy. This article reviews the use of contraception for individuals who are o

Living Donation by Individuals with Life-Limiting Conditions.

The traditional living donor was very healthy. However, as the supply-demand gap continues to expand, transplant programs have become more accepting of less healthy donors. This paper focuses on the other extreme, asking whether and when individuals who have life-limiting conditions (LLC) should be considered for living organ donation. We discuss ethical issues raised by 1) donation by individuals with progressive severe debilitating disease for whom there is no ameliorative therapy; and 2) donation by individuals who are imminently dying or would die by the donation process itself.

Individualization and the Health Care Mosaic in Assisted Living.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Assisted living (AL) is a popular residential long-term care option for frail older adults in the United States. Most residents have multiple comorbidities and considerable health care needs, but little is known about their health care arrangements, particularly over time. Our goal is to understand how health care is managed and experienced in AL by residents and their care network members. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This grounded theory analysis focuses on the delivery of health care in AL. Qualitative data were gathered from 28 residents and 114 of their care ne

Assessment of response to medication in individuals with Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Motor fluctuations between akinetic (medication OFF) and mobile phases (medication ON) states are one of the most prevalent complications of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). There is a need for a technology-based system to provide reliable information about the duration in different medication phases that can be used by the treating physician to successfully adjust therapy. METHODS: Two KinetiSense motion sensors were mounted on the most affected wrist and ankle of 19 PD subjects (age: 42-77, 14 males) and collected movement signals as the participants perform

Neuropathic pain in individuals with sickle cell disease.

Pain is the most frequently occurring complication of sickle cell disease (SCD) and the leading cause of hospitalizations for affected individuals. Acute pain episodes are also an independent predictor of mortality in individuals with SCD. The pathophysiology of pain in SCD is complex and has been attributed to several biologic factors, including oxidative stress, vaso-occlusion, ischemia-reperfusion injury and inflammation. In spite of this complex biology, painful events requiring hospitalization are simplistically referred to as "acute vaso-occlusive pain episodes" by the hematology communi
