Microplastics in Foods Intended for Health Purposes: From Dietary Supplements to Clinical Nutrition Products.

Microplastics (MPs) are pervasive contaminants that have been detected throughout the food chain. Their presence raises concerns in foods intended for health-related purposes, as these products are often consumed by vulnerable populations such as infants, older adults, and patients requiring clinical nutrition support. These groups may be more susceptible to contaminant exposure and may rely heavily on specialized foods. Therefore, understanding the occurrence and potential risks of MPs in such products is important. This review summarizes the current state of knowledge regarding the presence,

The applicability of the SERS technique in food contamination testing - The detailed spectroscopic, chemometric, genetic, and comparative analysis of food-borne Cronobacter spp. strains.

Microorganisms assigned as Cronobacter are Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, bacteria widely distributed in nature, home environments, and hospitals. They can also be detected in foods, milk powder, and powdered infant formula (PIF). Additionally, as an opportunistic pathogen, Cronobacter may cause serious infections, sometimes leading to the death of neonates and infants. Thus, it is essential to test food products for the presence of Cronobacter spp. The currently used standard described in ISO 22964:2017 is a laborious method that could be easily replaced by surface-enhanced Raman sca

Complementary feeding: new styles versus old myths.

Early life feeding habits may potentially alter future metabolic programming and body composition. Complementary feeding is the period of time when infants introduce food different from milk in their diet, together with a gradual reduction of the intake of milk (either breast milk or formula), to finally acquire the diet model of their family. This period is important in the transition of the infant from milk feeding to family foods, and is necessary for both nutritional and developmental reasons. The timing for introducing complementary foods and the method of feeding have changed over time.

Allergy march of Chinese children with infantile allergic symptoms: a prospective multi-center study.

BACKGROUND: Allergy march refers to progression of allergic diseases from infantile food allergy to the development of asthma and allergic rhinitis (AR). Evidence come mostly from studies in European countries. This study aimed to investigate allergy march in Chinese children with infantile food protein allergy (FPA) with a special focus on the effect of different formula interventions. METHODS: From 2008 to 2010, 153 infants diagnosed with FPA were recruited in five tertiary hospitals across China. They were randomly treated with amino-acid-based formula or soy-protein-based formula for a pe

Gut microbiota and development of atopic eczema in 3 European birth cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Stimulation of the immune system by gut microbes might prevent allergy development. OBJECTIVE: The present study examined the hypothesis that sensitization to food allergens and atopic eczema are influenced by the infantile intestinal colonization pattern. METHODS: Infants were recruited perinatally in Göteborg (n = 116), London (n = 108), and Rome (n = 100). Commensal bacteria were identified to the genus or species level in rectal (3 days) and quantitative stool cultures (7, 14, and 28 days and 2, 6, and 12 months of age). At 18 months of age, atopic eczema and total and food-s

Feeding Problems in Infants and Children.

This article focuses on factors related to decreased food intake of infants and children, but does not address anorexia or bulimia nervosa. The nature of feeding problems may be behavioral, organic, or a mixture of both. Behavioral problems that affect intake have their roots in 1) parental or cultural expectations for food intake and body habit, 2) parental anxiety about weight gain in a vulnerable child or insecurity about parental skills, 3) power struggles between parent and child that manifest in eating habits, 4) conditions that may have enhanced the gag reflex, such as prolonged orotrac

From womb to world-is it time to revisit our current guidelines for treatment of antenatal depression? Supporting the next generation to have the best start to life.

Antenatal depression affects 15-21% of pregnant women globally, increasing the risk of pregnancy complications, postnatal depression and poor birth and infant outcomes. Psychotherapy is a recommended treatment, but access barriers like cost, time and stigma often prevent their use. For severe cases, antidepressants are advised; however, only 3% of pregnant women in New Zealand take antidepressants, with concerns about risks to their infant identified as a main reason for discontinuing medications. Poor nutrition during pregnancy, particularly ultra-processed foods, is associated with higher ma

Severe upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage due to milk protein allergy: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage is a life-threatening manifestation of cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA). We analyze the clinical characteristics of a case of milk protein allergy manifested as severe upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage. CASE SUMMARY: The hospital admitted a 2-month-old male infant due to "melena for 6 days, hematemesis twice". The main symptom was melena, initially occurring once or twice per day, then gradually increasing to five or six times per day at their peak. During the course of the illness, the infant vomited blood, but there were no reports of vomiting,

Ultra-Processed Foods as a Cross-Cutting Driver of Health Inequities: Low- and Middle-Income Countries Across the Life-Course.

Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) have become a growing part of everyday diets worldwide and have been linked to obesity, non-communicable diseases, and adverse mental health outcomes. Yet their role in deepening nutritional and health inequalities across socioeconomic groups and different stages of life is still not fully addressed in policy discussions. Drawing on recent population-based studies, longitudinal surveys, and mechanistic evidence, this perspective examines how UPF consumption intersects with food insecurity, psychosocial distress, and neurodevelopmental health from pregnancy through

Breastfeeding and mixed feeding practices in Malawi: timing, reasons, decision makers, and child health consequences.

BACKGROUND: In order to effectively promote exclusive breastfeeding, it is important to first understand who makes child-care and child-feeding decisions, and why those decisions are made; as in most parts of the world, exclusive breastfeeding until 6 months of age is uncommon in Malawi. OBJECTIVE: To characterize early infant foods in rural northern Malawi, who the decision-makers are, their motivation, and the consequences for child growth, in order to design a more effective program for improved child health and nutrition. METHODS: In a rural area of northern Malawi, 160 caregivers of chi…

Human Milk Intake of Thai Breastfed Infants During the First 6 Months Using the Dose-to-Mother Deuterium Dilution Method.

BACKGROUND: Data on infant human milk intakes in low- and middle-income countries are limited, although the deuterium oxide dose-to-mother method (DTM) is an accurate tool for its estimation. OBJECTIVE: We assessed human milk intakes of Thai infants during the first 6 months comparing exclusive breastfeeding (EBF), predominant breastfeeding (PBF), and partial breastfeeding (PartBF). METHODS: One hundred and ten healthy Thai lactating mother-infant pairs were followed from birth. Human milk intakes were determined at 6 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months using the DTM method. Socioeconomic status, infant feeding practices and early childhood obesity.

BACKGROUND: Children from low socioeconomic households are at greater risk of obesity. As breastfeeding can protect against child obesity, disadvantaged infants are less likely to breastfeed relative to more advantaged children. Whether infant feeding patterns, as well as other maternal characteristics mediate the association between social class and obesity has not been established in available research. OBJECTIVES: Examine the impact of infant feeding practices on child obesity and identify the mechanisms that link socioeconomic status (SES) with child obesity. METHODS: Based on a national

The quantitative effect of infection on the use of food by young children in poor countries.

A framework based on consistent and explicit set of assumptions is developed for evaluating the effect of infection on the intake and efficiency of use of food by children under 5 years old in poor countries. A variety of data is used to obtain quantitative estimates of catabolic losses, clinical and subclinical absorbtive losses, changes in food intake patterns, and losses due to high infant and childhood mortality. Although additional data are required before these estimates can be considered reliable, it appears that about 9% of the food available to a cohort of children under 5 years old i

Nutritional intervention: a key to child survival.

In a collaborative relationship, researchers from the Cebu Institute of Medicine and from the United States have carried out a series of longitudinal studies of breast feeding and infant growth in a rural Philippine community. On the basis of our findings, we have conducted field experiments designed to have mothers improve their infants' diets using locally available food. Contingent reinforcement strategies were used successfully to get mothers to change their behavior and beliefs about infant feeding practices. The use of reinforcements resulted in improved diets and very high rates of cont

Suffocation deaths associated with use of infant sleep positioners--United States, 1997-2011.

Unintentional suffocation is the leading cause of injury death among children aged <1 year in the United States, accounting for nearly 1,000 infant deaths annually. Since 1984, an estimated fourfold increase has been observed in accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed, with many of these deaths linked to unsafe sleep environments. Infant sleep positioners (ISPs) are devices intended to keep an infant in a specific position while sleeping, yet ISPs have been reported to have been present in the sleep environment in some cases of unintentional infant suffocation. Some specific ISPs have

Bisphenol A (BPA) in U.S. food.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical used for lining metal cans and in polycarbonate plastics, such as baby bottles. In rodents, BPA is associated with early sexual maturation, altered behavior, and effects on prostate and mammary glands. In humans, BPA is associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and male sexual dysfunction in exposed workers. Food is a major exposure source. We know of no studies reporting BPA in U.S. fresh food, canned food, and food in plastic packaging in peer reviewed journals. We measured BPA levels in 105 fresh and canned foods, foods sold in plastic packaging, and

[Allergologic study of the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis in infancy and childhood].

The authors present the results of allergologic investigations in 54 infants and children with atopic dermatitis. To demonstrate the food and inhalative allergies, which are most important etiologic factors in this disease, different methods have been administered. Besides these in vitro and in vivo methods oral food challenges were done to verify the real causative role of the food in question. Food allergy only was verified in 16 cases, 12 patients were suffering in inhalative allergy. Both kind of allergens produced reaction in 19 cases. Dioxin-like activity in plasma among Danish pregnant women: dietary predictors, birth weight and infant development.

The aim of this study was to identify dietary predictors of plasma dioxin-like activity in women from the Danish National Birth Cohort. Associations between exposure and birth weight and infant development at 6 months were also explored. Diet was assessed in mid-pregnancy by a food-frequency questionnaire. One hundred nulliparous 25-35-year-old women of normal pre-pregnancy body-mass-index were chosen according to their intake of fatty fish, as fatty fish is a potential route of exposure. Intake of other foods of animal origin was also explored. Dioxin-like activity was measured in plasma usin
