In my practice as a recovery room nurse, I had observed anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists wave an opened alcohol preparation pad under a patient's nose when he or she complained of nausea. When asked, "Why?'' the response often was, "Because it works.'' The following article describes the use of inhalation of isopropyl alcohol as a treatment for postoperative nausea and vomiting. Because alcohol swabs are so readily available, and certainly less expensive than some of the newer antiemetics on the market, this simple nursing intervention was worth investigating.

The neurobehavioural effects of trichloroethylene (TCE) were studied in rats following administration of the solvent orally (350, 700 and 1400 ppm in drinking water for 90 days) and through inhalation (376 ppm for 4 h a day, 5 days per week for 180 days). Trichloroethylene (TCE) is an organic solvent used in dry cleaning, metal degreasing, thinner for paints and varnishes, anesthetic agent, and so forth. One of the most potent rodenticides is 2-fluoroacetamide (2-FA). Toxicity of this chemical is well documented. However, its inhalation toxicity data is not available in the literature. This retrospective study of 100 consecutive patients with inhalation injury documents that adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and pneumonia are common complications. Pulmonary complications cause or directly contribute to death in 77% of patients with combined inhalation and cutaneous burn injury. A wide range of legal, easily obtained products containing volatile substances are available for abuse.
