PURPOSE OF REVIEW: IL-32 is a recently described proinflammatory cytokine and has been reported to be involved in inflammatory diseases. The purpose of this review is to discuss the role of IL-32 in chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS).
RECENT FINDINGS: Two groups have recently reported data regarding the expression of IL-32 in CRS. IL-32 was induced by IFN-γ, TNF-α, dsRNA, and incubation with Th1 cells in primary nasal epithelial cells. IL-32 may be elevated in epithelial cells from patients with CRS without nasal polyps. IL-32 was significantly elevated in whole sinonasal tissue samples of nasal po

Acute lung injury is a complex clinical syndrome involving acute inflammation, microvascular damage, and increased pulmonary vascular and epithelial permeability, frequently resulting in acute respiratory failure culminating in often-fatal acute respiratory distress syndrome. Interleukin 8 (IL-8), a potent neutrophil attractant and activator, plays a significant role in acute lung injury via the formation of anti-IL-8 autoantibody:IL-8 complexes and those complexes' interaction with FcγRIIa receptors, leading to the development of acute lung injury by, among other possible mechanisms, effectin

The spondyloarthropathies represent highly enigmatic conditions and although their clinical features, anatomical distribution of disease and genetic predisposing factors have been known for some time, a unified concept of the basic pathobiology underlying these illnesses has remained undefined. Recently progress has been made because numerous independent studies have converged upon IL-23 as a central cytokine in spondyloarthropathy and the mechanism and sites of action of this cytokine have now become much clearer. These findings enable the rational design of therapeutic strategies which it is

Interleukin (IL)-6 is a potent pro-inflammatory agent that plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of systemic inflammatory disease. Targeting this pathway in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) seems an attractive option as IL-6 is important for both joint destruction and systemic manifestations. Currently, tocilizumab, which binds the IL-6 receptor, is licensed for treatment in active, moderate to severe disease in RA and systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). Several other promising IL-6 blocking agents as well as a subcutaneous form of tocilizumab are currently undergoing phase III clinical

Almost 3 decades have passed since the discovery and cloning of IL-6, and a tremendous amount of work has contributed to the current knowledge of the biological functions of this cytokine, its receptor, and the signaling pathways that are activated. The understanding of the role of IL-6 in human disease has led to the development of novel therapeutic strategies that block the biological functions of IL-6. In clinical studies, IL-6 and IL-6 receptor antibodies have proven efficacy in rheumatoid arthritis, systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and Castleman's disease, conditions that are known

Interleukin (IL)-32 is known as a proinflammatory cytokine that is likely involved in several diseases, including infections, chronic inflammation, and cancer. Since the first report in 2005, IL-32 has been the subject of numerous studies to unravel the biological function of this molecule. For example, silencing of endogenous IL-32 in primary or cell lines of human origin consistently suppressed responses to Toll-like receptors. The protein folding structure of the six isoforms of IL-32 does not resemble that of any classical cytokine and as of this writing, a specific IL-32 receptor has not

OBJECTIVE: The fetal inflammatory response syndrome (FIRS) is considered the fetal counterpart of the systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), which can be caused by infection and non-infection-related insults. Although the initial response is mediated by pro-inflammatory signals, the control of this response is achieved by anti-inflammatory mediators which are essential for the successful outcome of the affected individual. Interleukin (IL)-19 is capable of stimulating the production of IL-10, a major anti-inflammatory cytokine, and is a potent inducer of the T-helper 2 (Th2) response.

Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a pleomorphic cytokine involved in a number of physiologic and pathologic processes including response to trauma and infection and development and progression of inflammation and malignancy. IL-6 is emerging as an important mediator and novel therapeutic target for chronic inflammatory diseases and cancer. The present study reviews the available evidence regarding the association between IL-6 and a range of oral diseases including infections (periodontal disease and endodontic infections), immunologically mediated disorders (oral lichen planus and Sjögren's syndrome) an

Interleukin (IL)-6 is a typical cytokine featuring redundancy and pleiotropic activity. It contributes to host defense against pathogens, but dysregulation of IL-6 production plays a significant pathological role in various autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Because IL-6 blockade was expected to constitute a novel strategy for the treatment of such diseases, tocilizumab, a humanized anti-IL-6 receptor antibody (anti-IL-6RAb), was developed. Clinical trials have demonstrated the efficacy of anti-IL-6RAb for patients with rheumatoid arthritis, Castleman's disease, and juvenile idiopathic arth

BACKGROUND: Skewing of the immune response towards T helper (Th)1 or Th17 and away from regulatory T cells (Tregs) and Th2 cells may be responsible for the development and progression of autoimmune disease. An autoimmune theory has been proposed in the pathogenesis of vitiligo. No previous reports have investigated alterations in IL-17 produced by Th17 cells in lesional skin in vitiligo.
AIM: To investigate the role of IL-17 in the pathogenesis of vitiligo by assessing its levels in lesional skin and serum of patients with vitiligo compared with controls.
METHODS: In total, 30 patients with

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence indicates that various types of interactions between nervous and immune system are important in pathogenesis of depression. These findings show that a significant role in developing depression play pro-inflammatory cytokines that may mediate its psychological, and neurobiological manifestations. Great importance among these cytokine molecules plays interleukin-6 (IL-6). There is growing evidence that this inflammatory process related to depression may be influenced by psychological stress as well as organic inflammatory conditions. These findings suggest that specif

Several autoimmune diseases are thought to be mediated in part by interleukin (IL)-18. Many are those with associated increased interferon-gamma (IFNgamma) levels such as systemic lupus erythematosus, macrophage activation syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, psoriasis, and graft-versus-host disease. In addition, ischemia, including acute renal failure in human beings, appears to involve IL-18. Animal studies also support the concept that IL-18 is a key player in models of lupus erythematosus, atherosclerosis, graft-versus-host disease, and hepatitis. Unexpectedly, IL-18 plays a ro

BACKGROUND: Interleukin-16 (IL-16) has been characterized as a chemoattractant for a variety of CD4+ T cells. Several inflammatory diseases, including allergic disorders, have been reported to correlate with IL-16. We first examined the IL-16 expression of serum and mucosal tissue in patients with allergic rhinitis.
METHODS: Forty-eight patients with a clinical history of house dust mite (HDM) or pollen-sensitive allergic rhinitis were included in this study. Serum IL-16 was analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). IL-16 expression of nasal mucosa was detected by immunohistochem

Inflammation is commonly observed in liver diseases and is frequently complicated by fibrosis and cirrhosis in end-stage disease. The only curative treatment for cirrhotic patients is liver transplantation. However, organ shortage as well as an increasing organ demand call for early treatment of liver disease and prevention of fibrosis. Experimental data have shown the critical role of pro-inflammatory cytokines like tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) in the development of liver injury. Here, we review our work on the role of endogenously produced interleu

The human fallopian tube is a dynamic structure that undergoes cyclic variation in its functional epithelium. This epithelium contains both secretory and ciliated cells. The mechanisms regulating the growth and function of the tubal epithelium are not fully understood. Interleukin-8 (IL-8) is one potential local regulatory factor. We therefore characterized the IL-8 system, which includes IL-8, its receptors A and B, and its degradative enzyme aminopeptidase N, in the human fallopian tube by immunohistochemistry. Immunohistochemistry was performed on isthmic, ampullary, and fimbrial fallopian

We performed an immunohistochemical study to try to determine the cellular source of interleukin-8 (IL-8) in psoriatic skin lesions. IL-8 was positively stained in the vast majority of neutrophils but not in the mononuclear cells, macrophages, or keratinocytes. IL-8-positive neutrophils were seen both in Munro's microabcesses in cases of psoriasis vulgaris and in a small spongiform pustule and much larger macropustules of Kogoj in cases of pustular psoriasis. Some IL-8-positive neutrophils were observed in the upper dermis of pustular psoriasis. The staining was considered to be specific becau
