This article describes a post-hoc analysis of clinical and psychosocial factors and beliefs about health associated with treatment outcome in a sample of depressed primary care patients (N=181) randomly assigned to a standardized treatment or physician's usual care (UC). Different factors were found to predict clinical outcomes for treatment modality [UC vs. interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) or nortriptyline (NT)] and the type of outcome evaluated (i.e., depressive symptoms at 8 months or symptomatic and functional recovery at 8 months). Factors associated with treatment-specific outcomes are …

The author examined the therapeutic sequence of 37 child and adolescent cases of neurotic disorder in whom the non-verbal approach was successively taken for more than 6 months. The cases could be classified into two types, according to their choice of non-verbal methods: "simple type" cases, who chose only one method at all their therapeutic sessions and "mixed type" cases, who took various combinations of non-verbal methods during the period of psychotherapy. In "simple type" cases, premorbid character was usually introverted and emotionally stable. As for their family situations, their fath

Cognitive behavioral therapies have positive effects on anger and aggression; however, individuals differ in their response to treatment. The authors previously found that dynamic factors, such as increases in readiness to change, are associated with enhanced outcomes for violence reduction training. This study investigated how less dynamic factors, specifically Cluster B personality traits, moderate the effects of violence reduction training. The authors used mixed modeling to fit growth curves to 14 weeks of anger strategies data and evaluated whether the presence of Cluster B traits affecte

Psychosomatic medicine in intensive care units is essentially characterized by problems arising from the emotional involvement of the intensive care unit team. That is why the functions of a psychosomaticist are not only the diagnostics of psychosyndromes and the psychotherapy of dangerously ill patients, but especially the study of psychological interrelations within the unit team. Hypochondriac depressive psychosyndromes caused by the experience of dread, confusion, exhaustion and communication problems, as well as psychosyndromes characterized by a reduction of consciousness and orientation

A study that would appear to overcome two weaknesses in previous investigations of what have been termed 'antidepressive behaviours' is reported, from patients routinely attending two general practices. Questionnaires were designed to measure such behaviours and their reported effectiveness in response to potential precipitants of depression. While the subjects revealed no sex differences on a trait depression measure, in previous recourse to professional help for depression, or in their appraisal of two given situations, a number of sex differences in their reported antidepressive responses w

BACKGROUND: The present study aimed to determine the predictive model of health-promoting lifestyle in cardiovascular patients based on intimate relationships and distress tolerance, mediated by cognitive flexibility.
METHODS: The research design was a cross-sectional correlational study using structural equation modeling. The statistical population included cardiovascular patients in 2025 who referred to three specialized cardiology clinics for outpatient examination. A total of 265 individuals were selected as the sample using convenience sampling. Standard questionnaires for health-promoti

Sigmund Freud developed Drive Theory from clinical observations and proposed that a limited set of basic drives, including hunger, thirst, sleep, sexuality, and attachment, contributes to psychological stability. Modern reinterpretations allow these drives to be discussed alongside neurobiological regulation, including serotonergic and opioidergic signalling, which are relevant to depressive disorders. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors remain a common first line pharmacological option, yet treatment response varies, and simplified deficiency accounts are debated in the current literature

Level of Personality Functioning in Adolescence: Psychological and Biological Aspects in the Context of Diagnosis and Therapy Adolescence is a crucial developmental phase in which identity, interpersonal relationships, and emotional regulation are further shaped and consolidated. These processes build upon early attachment experiences. At the same time, there is an increased vulnerability to personality disorders (PD), which are influenced by genetic and environmental factors such as abuse, neglect, and insecure attachment patterns. These factors can trigger neurobiological changes, including

OBJECTIVES: Avoidant personality disorder (AvPD) is a highly prevalent personality disorder, especially in clinical settings, yet scarcely researched. People diagnosed with AvPD have severe impairments in functioning and suffer greatly, yet we still lack meta-analytic evidence for therapy and only a few RCTs are conducted. Patient factors are the most important for outcome in therapy, in general. Lack of agency might be a core deficit in people diagnosed with AvPD. Their conditions might be improved if we understand their agency better. We review previous research regarding psychological mecha

BACKGROUND: Patients with complex dissociative disorders (CDD) report high levels of childhood- abuse experiences, clinical comorbidity, functional impairment, and treatment utilization. Although a few naturalistic studies indicate that these patients can benefit from psychotherapy, no randomized controlled trials have been reported with this patient-group. The current study evaluates a structured protocolled group treatment delivered in a naturalistic clinical setting to patients with CDD, as an add-on to individual treatment.
METHODS: Fifty nine patients with CDD were randomized to 20 sessi

The nature and quality of the relationship between therapist and client in psychotherapy, known as therapeutic alliance, have been proposed as one of the most important factors for successful treatment outcome, which has been has robustly supported across many types of treatment, populations, raters of alliance (i.e., client, therapist, or observer), and alliance measures. However, most research on alliance and treatment outcome has been conducted in children and adults with internalizing problems (e.g., mood and anxiety disorders) or children with externalizing problems (e.g., conduct disorde

BACKGROUND: Psychopathy and substance use disorders are highly co-morbid and their co-occurrence is associated with higher severity of addictive behavior and increased risk of violent offending. Both substance use disorders and psychopathy are related to prominent impairments in emotion processing, which are also central features of alexithymia. The nature of the relationship between psychopathy and alexithymia is not well-understood and has been particularly understudied among substance dependent individuals.
AIM: Our goal was to evaluate the levels of psychopathy and alexithymia in a relati

People, who assist patients with chronic health problems for work, voluntary or for family reasons, may be affected by burnout. This is defined as an excessive reaction to stress caused by one's environment that may be characterized by feelings of emotional and physical exhaustion, coupled with a sense of frustration and failure. A person who assists a suffering person, beyond the professional role, is indicated generally by the term "caregiver". The definition of Burnout in families is fairly recent, because the psychology of trauma has ignored a large segment of traumatized and disabled subj

BACKGROUND: Complicated Grief (CG) is a recently recognized bereavement-related mental health disorder. Social support is commonly measured with the Interpersonal Support Evaluation List (ISEL), a 40-item, 4-factor, self-report measure. Though the ISEL has been well-studied, no identified research has examined its psychometric properties or performance in older adults with CG.
METHODS: We examined the psychometric properties of the ISEL in adults age ≥60 who enrolled in a psychotherapy treatment study for CG in New York City. We also examined the association of ISEL scores with CG severity, a

BACKGROUND: Task shifting is a well-tested implementation strategy within low- and middle-income countries that addresses the shortage of trained mental health personnel. Task shifting can increase access to care for patients with mental illnesses. In Kenya, community health workers (CHWs) are a combination of community health assistants and community health volunteers and have played a crucial role on this front. In our study, we seek to assess the acceptability and feasibility of Group Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT-G) delivered by CHWs among depressed postpartum adolescents (PPAs) living …
