Polysubstance abuse--a case study.

This article presents the case history of a 23-year-old white male's recovery from 12 years of alcohol and other substance abuse. The peer pressures that led to the experimental use of marijuana at age 11 and the evolving social relations that contributed to chronic substance use are described. Included are details about the subject's family life, peer relationships, criminal involvement, and transition from alcohol and marijuana use to chronic amphetamine addiction. Experiences with drug burn-out and the eventual rehabilitation and recovery process that led to a lifestyle that is currently fr

[Drugs from the patient's viewpoint].

The author gives psychosocial consultation hours for single and aged persons at Basle. The present study is based, for one part, on her observations regarding problems of interhuman relations and, for the other part, on an inquiry she conducted with 122 patients during September and October 1979: 105 among them take drugs regularly, but only 8 of them were able to tell the exact name of their drug. Most of her patients take the opportunity of the prescription to establish a contact with a human being involved and this contact is important for them. The doctor is the "drug" they need; the dialo

Injecting-related trust, cooperation, intimacy, and power as key factors influencing risk perception among drug injecting partnerships.

Sharing of injection drug use paraphernalia is a dyadic process linked to the transmission of HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV). Despite this, limited research exists identifying specific dyadic interpersonal factors driving injecting partners' engagement in needle/syringe and ancillary injecting equipment sharing among young adults. Using semi-structured in-depth interview data collected between 2014 and 2015 from twenty-seven people who inject drugs (PWID), we applied an inductive approach to identify key injection drug-related interpersonal factors and developed a conceptual model integrating

Online-Offline Social Interaction, Interpersonal Well-Being, and Age Cohort Resilience Among Chinese Adolescents.

Research has documented the various effects of internet use on adolescent well-being. However, few studies have integrated the Displacement Hypothesis and the Stimulation Hypothesis to compare the effects of online and offline communication on the quality of interpersonal relationships among adolescents. Moreover, limited research has examined the role of age cohort in these relationships. The present study addresses these gaps by investigating the age-related differences in these associations. Specifically, we examined the influence of both online and offline communication on the quality of a…

Abusive behavior in the workplace: a preliminary investigation.

Dealing with hostile interpersonal relationships at work has been the topic of many popular books and workshops. Yet, with the exception of sexual harassment, there is surprisingly little mention in the organizational research literature on the nature, extent, and costs of abusive work interactions. These more frequent, more tolerated, and, thus, more damaging interpersonal interactions involve hostile verbal and nonverbal nonphysical behaviors directed by one or more persons towards another. The primary aim is to undermine the other to ensure compliance. In this study, we examined the extent …

The ties that bind: How interpersonal connections shape Latinx immigrant health.

Emerging scholarship has identified posttraumatic distress as a critical health disparity affecting recently immigrated Latinx youth and families. Indeed, trauma exposure is highly prevalent in families and children that flee violence and seek asylum in the United States and relates to a number of physical and mental health conditions. An interpersonal lens is useful for conceptualizing risk and resilience in this group, wherein interpersonal traumas, like family separation, appear critically associated with health disruption, and interpersonal sources of belonging, such as attachment, peer ne

Silent scars: understanding interpersonal sensitivity, paranoid ideation, and hostility from adverse childhood experiences in Jamaica.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are known to predict adverse outcomes related to physical and mental health, including anxiety and depression. How ACEs predict the outcomes of interpersonal sensitivity, paranoid ideation, and hostility, which are known to be associated with impaired interpersonal relationships, interpersonal conflict and violence, is less well researched. Consequently, this study aimed to determine the extent to which the number and types of ACEs that individuals experienced were associated with these outcomes, and whether these relationships were moderated by…

How alexithymia impacts the association between interpersonal trauma and somatization.

Exposure to traumatic events has many health-related sequalae, one of which is somatization. Somatization is the manifestation of psychological or emotional distress in bodily symptoms, often leading to distressing thoughts and behaviors related to the physical symptoms and unusual or persistent requests for medical assistance. Interpersonal trauma, which includes traumatic events that occur in the context of an interpersonal relationship (e.g., physical/emotional/sexual assault, intimate partner violence, childhood trauma) has been strongly linked to somatic symptoms. Another potential risk f…

The perceived COVID-19 pandemic risk and mental distress in China: the mediating role of interpersonal trust and the moderating role of social cohesion.

INTRODUCTION: An increasing number of studies have highlighted the consequences of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and the mechanisms through which it inflicts harm. However, few have examined the relationship between perceived pandemic risk and mental distress from an interpersonal perspective. Drawing on the stress system model, trust theory, social-support theory, and exchange-emotion-cohesion theory, the present study investigates whether perceived pandemic risk is positively associated with mental distress, whether different types of interpersonal trust mediate this relat

Alexithymia and interpersonal problems in healthy young individuals.

BACKGROUND: Alexithymia refers to a multidimensional personality trait with the facets difficulties identifying feelings (DIF), difficulties describing feelings (DDF), and externally orientated thinking (EOT). Alexithymia is a risk factor for mental and somatic disorders. Previous research with patients suffering from various disorders showed positive relationships between alexithymia and interpersonal problems. Only one study analyzed the link between alexithymic features and interpersonal difficulties in healthy individuals but yielded inconclusive findings because participants' negative aff

Negative affective responses to positive events and stimuli in patients with complex dissociative disorders: a mixed-methods pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that individuals exposed to (childhood) trauma are not only unable to experience pleasure, known as hedonic deficit (HD), but also experience 'negative affective responses to positive events', known as negative affective interference (NAI). The clinical relevance and prognostic features of NAI have increasingly been recognized. To date, no studies have focused on NAI in patients with complex dissociative disorders (CDDs) who were abused early in life. OBJECTIVE: In this pilot study, we quantitatively and qualitatively investigated how NAI is related to trauma-rel

Unique and Interactive Associations Between Maltreatment and Complex Emotion Recognition Deficits and Psychopathic Traits in an Undergraduate Sample.

Psychopathy is defined by affective and interpersonal deficits, deviant lifestyle, and antisocial behaviors. Poor recognition of emotions and childhood maltreatment are two risk factors implicated in psychopathy. The current study examined whether childhood maltreatment and complex emotion recognition deficits showed unique and interactive associations with psychopathic traits among 261 undergraduate students. Results indicate that maltreatment was related to higher general psychopathy scores within a bifactor model comprising a general psychopathy factor and four specific factors tapping unde

Psychometric properties of the Italian version of the Tendency for Interpersonal Victimhood.

This study validated the Italian version of the Tendency for Interpersonal Victimhood (TIV), originally developed by Gabay et al. (2020). The TIV assesses a personality trait across four dimensions: Need for Recognition, Moral Elitism, Rumination, and Lack of Empathy, which are crucial for understanding interpersonal dynamics and emotional regulation in various psychological contexts. Data from 1254 participants (56.5 % female, aged 18-70) confirmed a hierarchical model with one latent dimension and four method dimensions and high reliability (Cronbach's α = 0.84-0.91). Strong correlations wit

Individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder show larger preferred social distance in live dyadic interactions.

Personal space regulation is a key component of effective social engagement. Personal space varies among individuals and with some mental health conditions. Simulated personal space intrusions in Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) reveal larger preferred interpersonal distance in that setting. These findings led us to conduct the first test of live interpersonal distance preferences in symptoms in BPD. With direct observation of subjects' personal space behavior in the stop-distance paradigm, we found a 2-fold larger preferred interpersonal distance in BPD than control (n = 30, n = 23). We

The role of maladaptive beliefs in cognitive-behavioral therapy: Evidence from social anxiety disorder.

Beliefs that are negatively biased, inaccurate, and rigid are thought to play a key role in the mood and anxiety disorders. Our goal in this study was to examine whether a change in maladaptive beliefs mediated the outcome of individual cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for social anxiety disorder (SAD). In a sample of 47 individuals with SAD receiving CBT, we measured maladaptive interpersonal beliefs as well as emotional and behavioral components of social anxiety, both at baseline and after treatment completion. We found that (a) maladaptive interpersonal beliefs were associated with socia

Prevalence and correlates of interpersonal violence victimization in a junior enlisted Navy cohort.

This study assesses the prevalence and correlates of interpersonal violence victimization in a cohort of 493 male and 220 female junior Navy personnel who participated in a cross-sectional follow-up study on health-related behaviors. Survey data were obtained during 2000 about past-year prevalence of physical violence and sexual victimization. Chi-square tests of independence and multivariable logistic regression analyses were employed to estimate prevalence rates and to assess correlates of interpersonal violence. No gender differences were found for rates of violence victimization (16.4%) or
