Exploring psychosocial experiences in clinically stable generalised Myasthenia Gravis: A thematic analysis.

Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular condition that significantly impacts patients' lives. Whilst psychosocial challenges are increasingly recognised as important in understanding the lived experience of patients, insight into these experiences during periods of clinical stability remains underexplored. This qualitative study explores the psychological and social aspects of living with MG through thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews with eight adults from a specialist MG care clinic in London, all considered clinically stable for at least three months. Data w

Psychological health and life experiences of pregnant adolescent mothers in Jamaica.

A recent Jamaican school-based survey revealed that 23.1% of 13-15 year-olds, had attempted suicide one or more times during the last 12 months. Research that links adolescent pregnancy and suicidal behaviour is lacking in Jamaica. Psychological distress and suicidal behaviours amongst pregnant adolescents elsewhere in the Americas has been documented at prevalence of between 13.3%-20%. The purpose of the study was to explore the experiences and the impact of pregnancy on pregnant adolescent psychological health. Individual interviews and focus groups were conducted with adolescents in two Jam

Long-term outcome of presymptomatic testing in Huntington disease.

Our study on long-term outcome of presymptomatic testing for Huntington disease had two aims: the comparison of the psychological well-being and social adjustment of carriers and non-carriers of the mutation, and the identification of psychological determinants to improve care/support of testees. We performed a cross-sectional study of 351 persons who underwent presymptomatic testing. Those who had motor signs were excluded from the comparison of asymptomatic carrier and non-carriers. A structured interview including five self-report scales and the MINI (Mini International Neuropsychiatric Inv

Panic in a general practice population: prevalence, psychiatric comorbidity and associated disability.

BACKGROUND: Panic disorder and simple panic are known to be common disorders associated with various physical and psychological difficulties, but their prevalence rates as reported in the literature vary widely. This paper is the result of a survey of panic in a general practice population, and discusses prevalence rates, screening for panic and psychiatric comorbidity. Comparisons are made between subjects with and without panic with regard to their self-reported disability. METHODS: A random sample of 2000 individuals from the patient list of a group general practice were sent a questionnai

After the war in Nicaragua: a psychosocial study of war wounded ex-combatants.

Despite 150 wars in the Third World since 1945, there have been virtually no psychosocial studies of war wounded ex-combatants. This community study of 72 such men, on average 4.9 years post-injury, had both quantitative (General Health Questionnaire [GHQ] and clinical interview) and qualitative (personal narrative) components. Most men were coping adaptively. However their overall GHQ scores were significantly higher than an ex-combatant control group, suggesting relative psychological vulnerability (P = 0.001). 13 (18 per cent) had post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) though in only three w

Psychological and Behavioral Adjustment in Patients with Non-Traumatic Lower Limb Amputation and Prosthesis: A Mixed-Method Triangulation Study.

Background: Lower limb amputation (LLA), due to non-traumatic causes such as vascular diseases and diabetes, significantly impacts patients' physical, psychological, and social well-being. While multidisciplinary rehabilitation programs commonly address physical and functional recovery, psychological and subjective experiences related to limb loss remain less explored. Thus, this preliminary study aimed to investigate the psychological and behavioral adaptation processes in patients undergoing rehabilitation following lower limb amputation. Methods: A preliminary observational study with a mix

Mental health literacy in maintenance hemodialysis: a qualitative study on recognition, knowledge fragmentation, and stigma-related help-seeking barriers.

BACKGROUND: Psychological distress is highly prevalent among patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (MHD), yet qualitative evidence on their mental health literacy (MHL) remains scarce. OBJECTIVE: To explore the actual level of mental health literacy, existing challenges, and needs for psychological services among patients on maintenance hemodialysis; to identify the constituent dimensions of mental health literacy in this population; and to provide qualitative evidence for developing a localized, specialized mental health literacy scale for this group and implementing targeted psycholo

Comparison of Health and Health Risk Factors Between Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Adults and Heterosexual Adults in the United States: Results From the National Health Interview Survey.

IMPORTANCE: Previous studies identified disparities in health and health risk factors among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) adults, but prior investigations have been confined to samples not representative of the US adult population or have been limited in size or geographic scope. For the first time in its long history, the 2013 and 2014 National Health Interview Survey included a question on sexual orientation, providing health information on sexual minorities from one of the nation's leading health surveys. OBJECTIVE: To compare health and health risk factors between LGB adults and hetero

Depression comorbid with anxiety: results from the WHO study on psychological disorders in primary health care.

The World Health Organization collaborative study on "Psychological Problems in General Health Care" investigated the form, frequency, course and outcome of common psychological problems in primary care settings at 15 international sites. The research employed a two-stage case-finding procedure. GHQ-12 was administered to 25916 adults who consulted health-care services. The second-stage assessment (n = 5438) consisted of the Composite international Diagnostic Interview (CIDI), the Social Disability Schedule, and questionnaires. Possible cases or borderline cases of mental disorder, and a sampl

'Returning to normal' following bone marrow transplantation: outcomes, expectations and informed consent.

The psychosocial impact of bone marrow transplantation (BMT) was investigated in 172 disease-free adult BMT survivors drawn from five different BMT treatment centers. Respondents were a mean of 43.5 months after BMT. Both questionnaire and interview assessments were utilized. Survivors' perceptions of whether they had 'returned to normal' following BMT, recollections of pre-BMT expectations for returning to normal and current psychological distress were assessed. The results indicated that only a minority of respondents considered themselves to have 'returned to normal' following BMT. Reports

Investigative Interviewing of Aboriginal Children in Cases of Suspected Sexual Abuse.

This study examined the investigative interviewing of Australian Aboriginal children in cases of alleged sexual abuse, with a focus on three commonly included components of interview protocols: ground rules, practice narrative, and substantive phase. Analysis of 70 field transcripts revealed that the overall delivery and practice of ground rules at the beginning of the interview was positively associated with the spontaneous usage of rules in children's narratives of abuse. When specifically examining the "don't know" rule, however, only practice had an effect of children's usage of the rule (

Going it alone: solo mothers and their infants conceived by donor insemination.

Findings are presented from a study of solo-mother families with an infant conceived by donor insemination (DI). Twenty-seven solo-mother DI families were compared with 50 married DI families on standardized interview and questionnaire measures of mothers' psychological well-being and the quality of parent-child relationships. Solo DI mothers showed lower levels of mother-child interaction and lower levels of sensitivity toward their infant than married DI mothers. Solo DI mothers appeared to be more open toward disclosing the donor conception to the child than were married DI mothers.

Amnestic state in a Holocaust survivor patient: psychogenic versus neurological basis.

Differentiation between psychogenic and organic amnesia is sometimes quite difficult. This paper focuses on the psychogenic and organic components of a complex case of amnesia rooted in remote and prolonged traumatic stress and manifested under circumstances evoking dissociated memories. The Transient Global Amnesia (TGA) of a concentration camp survivor who developed sudden amnesia during a psychiatric intake interview was clearly triggered by the pressure of repressed Holocaust memories. The importance of distinguishing between TGA and dissociative amnesia is emphasized, and the role of psyc

Use of computerized prenatal interviews for assessing high-risk behaviors among American Indians.

The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of risk factors for adverse pregnancy outcomes among American Indians and to compare self-reported information collected under two computer interview conditions: an "anonymous" (N = 183) versus a "confidential" (N = 210) format. Results indicated that under 10% in both groups reported either use of cigarettes or other drugs of abuse, 16% reported risky drinking, 39% reported psychological distress, and 8% reported physical abuse during the current pregnancy. We concluded that confidential computer interviews were appropriate vehicle
