The objective was to conduct a comprehensive review of the morbidity and mortality observed in published patients with gastrointestinal defe … hydramnios. Three distinct phenotypic associations were identified: immune deficiency and multiple intestinal atresia without enteropathy (ID/MI), immune deficiency and enteropathy without atresia (ID/E), and immune deficiency with multiple intestinal atresia and enteropathy (ID/ MIA/E). The mortality rates for these groups were 91.6%, 47.3% and 55.5%, respectively …

Intestinal obstruction due to midgut malrotation in neonates is well known. The incidence of malrotation in newborns is around 1:500 and the symptomatic incidence is 1:6000 births. Duodenal web as a cause of intestinal obstruction is less common and is reported to be 1:10 000-1:40 000. Malrotation is known to be associated with other congenital obstructive anomalies including duodenal atresia, stenosis and duodenal web. But, intestinal obstruction due to malrotation associated with duodenal web has been reported only rarely with a few published cases in our literature review. We present a case

OBJECTIVES: Intestinal failure (IF) is a common consequence of neonatal small bowel pathology. In our experience, bowel dilatation is often responsible for the IF state in patients who fail to adapt despite adequate residual bowel length. The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of surgery to reduce bowel dilatation, and thus favour PN independence, for these children.
METHODS: Data were collected prospectively for all of the patients referred to our unit for a 7-year period (2004-2011). Eight patients (2 congenital atresia, 2 gastroschisis with atresia, 1 simple gastroschisis

AIMS: To investigate the role played by amniotic fluid in late fetal nutrition by analysis of infants born with digestive tract atresia.
METHODS: Birth weight (BW), gestational age and gender of infants born with oesophageal (OA), duodenal (DA), jejunal (JA) and ileal atresia (IA) were recorded and BW Z-scores compared. Infants with incomplete obstruction (stenosis), chromosomal or syndromic conditions and multiple congenital malformations were excluded. Term infants admitted with suspected postnatal intestinal obstruction in whom no congenital malformation was found were used as a control gr

BACKGROUND Bilious vomiting in a child potentially portends the dire emergency of intestinal malrotation with volvulus, necessitating prompt surgical management, with differentials including small-bowel atresia, duodenal stenosis, annular pancreas, and intussusception. Although the upper-gastrointestinal series (UGI) is the diagnostic investigation of choice, up to 15% of the studies are inconclusive, thereby posing a diagnostic challenge. CASE REPORT We report a case series of 3 children referred for bilious vomiting, whose initial UGI was inconclusive and who were eventually confirmed to hav

OBJECTIVE: To present a new technique using the Kehr's T tube (KT) in complex intestinal anastomoses.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Restrospective descriptive analysis of 8 patients intervened from 2007 to 2011. We performed intestinal anastomoses guided by a KT in 7 patients with intestinal atresia (yeyunal n = 5, ileal n = 1, duodenal n = 1), and in 1 patient with yeyunal stenosis associated with gastroschisis. 4 cases (50%) were reoperations because of complications after the first surgery.
SURGICAL TECHNIQUE: the KT is introduced through the dilated proximal bowel. The proximal end of the "T" i…

A patient was admitted to the hospital in the 31st week of gestation because of reduced sensation of fetal movements and a pathologic fetal heart rate tracing (Fig. 1). At first no underlying pathology could be found. After a week she developed a polyhydramnios. After repeated ultrasonographic examinations an atresia of the fetal small bowel was suspected (Fig. 2). The diagnosis could be confirmed after birth and on the same day the child was operated on. An atresia of the ileum was found. After liberal resection of the atretic part, recovery was complete. The malformation has an incidence of

We present a case of bilateral choanal atresia, cleft of the posterior palate. Cardiac, respiratory and central nervous system examinations were normal. An examination of the chest revealed aplasia of the bilateral absence of the bilateral nipple-areola complex. Skin, soft tissue and bilateral pectoral muscles of the chest wall were normal. The patient did not have scalp nodules or abnormal ears. Four hours after birth, an X-ray examination showed the distended intestinal loops, suggesting small bowel obstruction. Exploration was performed and congenital jejunal atresia was surgically identifi

Hemangiomas of the umbilical cord are rare. In this case, an acute, massive fetal hemorrhage from a ruptured umbilical hemangioma occurred after spontaneous rupture of membranes. Ectopic small intestinal mucosa covered the proximal surface of the umbilical cord. Fetal anomalies included a patent vitellointestinal duct remnant and distal ileal atresia. Fetal hemorrhage appears to be another previously unreported and potentially life-threatening complication of umbilical hemangiomas.

Intra vitam diagnostic procedures revealed a complete laryngo-tracheo-oesophageal cleft in a premature infant with respiratory distress. Anamnesis together with clinical and roentgenological symptoms suggested the diagnosis of oesophageal atresia or oesophago-tracheal fistula. The diagnosis of "oesophago-trachea" was finally confirmed by laryngo-tracheoscopy. The morphologic defect in this case was combined with partial supradiaphragmatic dislocation of the stomach and with intestinal malrotation.

AIMS/INTRODUCTION: It was reported that fetuses secrete endogenous incretin; however, the stimulants of fetal incretin secretion are not fully understood. To investigate the association between the passage of amniotic fluid through the intestinal tract and fetal secretion of incretin, we analyzed umbilical cord incretin levels of infants with duodenum atresia.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Infants born from July 2017 to July 2019 (infants with duodenum atresia and normal term or preterm infants) were enrolled. We measured and compared the concentrations of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and gastric

Strømme syndrome is a rare multiple congenital malformation syndrome consisting in apple peel intestinal atresia, ocular anomalies, microcephaly and developmental delay. To date, this condition was described in a couple of sibs and 7 additional sporadic patients. We report on a 11-month-old female, who requested surgical correction for jejunal atresia shortly after birth and also presented with megalocornea and persistence of the pupillary membrane. Microcephaly and developmental delay were absent at last examination. An oligonucleotide CGH-array analysis excluded cryptic chromosome rearrangem…

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Duodenal atresia (DA) occurs in 1 in every 6,000 live births and represents a significant surgically correctable cause of intestinal obstruction in the neonate. Familial or congenital DA has been reported, implying that at least some cases of DA are the result of genetic, heritable abnormalities. The genes controlling duodenal development are incompletely understood. Fibroblast growth factor receptor 2IIIb (Fgfr2b) is known to play a critical role in the development of multiple organ systems including other gastrointestinal tract (GIT) structures. This study shows the key r

INTRODUCTION: Small bowel atresia (SBA) is one of the most common causes of congenital intestinal obstruction. However, the accuracy of prenatal ultrasound in diagnosing this condition has not been entirely ascertained. The aim of this study was to analyse the predictive accuracy of ultrasound in detecting SBA prenatally.
METHODOLOGY: Retrospective study of all cases with prenatal suspicion or postnatal confirmed SBA seen in a tertiary fetal medicine and pediatric surgery units from 2007 to 2013. Cases with duodenal atresia were excluded from the study. The predictive accuracy of ultrasound a

We describe an unusual case of ileal atresia, resulting from antenatal strangulation of a Meckel's diverticulum in an exomphalos minor. This is a rare antenatal complication of Littre's hernia, which has not been previously described. A small exomphalos minor at the base of umbilical cord and late onset vascular accident at the narrow defect leading to ileal atresia may be missed in the prenatal diagnosis. The triad of exomphalos minor, Meckel's diverticulum and terminal ileal atresia secondary to antenatal strangulation of Littre's hernia is very rare to find in the same patient. A small exom

8 cases of congenital colonic atresias treated between 1968 and 1985 are presented. Questions regarding the aetiology of this rather rare anomaly are discussed. The interference with the mesenteric blood supply often as a result of intrauterine abdominal accidents seems to be a plausible explanation for most cases. We saw a high incidence of associated malformations not stated by other authors. Classification of atresias, diagnostic proceedings and operative management are discussed. The mortality of 50% can probably be lowered by the progress in total parenteral nutrition.
