BACKGROUND: Colorectal proliferative lesions are not common in dogs. However, recently we have observed an increase in the number of diagnosed cases and a lack of publications providing current epidemiological data on lesions of the large intestine in dogs. The aim of this study was a retrospective analysis of 217 canine colorectal non-neoplastic and neoplastic nodular lesions, and assessment of the frequency of occurrence of individual lesions and whether there is a risk of their occurrence depending on age, sex, or dog breed.

The clinical case of a 73-years old male who was admitted for diarrhea and loss of weight is presented. Barium enema and colonoscopy demonstrated small size polyps in the sigmoid colon, one of which had a histologic diagnosis of adenocarcinoma. Abdominal examination detected a mass in the mesohypogastrium which did not appear to be related to the previous findings. CAT and intestinal transit confirmed a second tumor in the small bowel with the histologic diagnosis of a resected specimen being melanoma.

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS), also known as periorificial lentiginosis, is a rare autosomal dominant inherited disease with an incidence of 1/200,000 live-borns. Conventional endosonographic techniques of examination in early carcinoma and sessile rectal adenoma have shown unsatisfactory results. We therefore fill the rectal cavity directly with water. Using this technique the anatomy of the rectal polyp is preserved, and the separate layers are easier to differentiate, especially when the 10-MHz scanner is used. The clinical results in 56 patients show an improvement concerning the preoperative staging especially in those tumors which are not palpable.

After colonoscopic perforation, laparotomy was performed in a 28-year-old woman. Seromuscular tears and lacerations were found in an adjacent loop of sigmoid colon that appeared normal through the colonoscope. At laparotomy, the mucosa of that loop was entirely intact. Six weeks later, a laparotomy was again performed, revealing well-healed lacerations with extensive adhesion formation. The incidence of this complication in patients undergoing colonoscopy is unknown.

The adenomas of Familial Polyposis Coli and of Gardner's syndrome are widely thought to affect the large bowel only. However, this report and a critical review of the literature shows that of the few hundred reported cases of these diseases, at least thirty-six have also shown gastric and/or small bowel polyps. The majority have been concentrated in stomach, duodenum and ampulla of Vater and the latter two areas have shown the highest incidence of carcinoma. It seems that gastric polyps are especially associated with Familial Polyposis Coli, and duodeno-ampullary ones with Gardner's syndrome.

In 86 (49.4%) of 173 patients cancer of the colon of various localizations against the background of diffuse polyposis was diagnosed, rectal involvement being noted in 50%, cancer involvement of the cecum involvement of the cecum and ascending colon--in 5.4% and 7.2% accordingly.
