Boosting the mobility of ions in nanoporous confinement by applying a gate voltage.

The mobility of ions under confinement in nanoporous host materials is central to many electrochemical energy transformation and storage devices. By using ionic liquids (ILs) as electrolytes and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as well-defined, regular nanoporous hosts, the dynamic ion properties were explored in detail. Here, we demonstrate for the first time that applying a gate-voltage (perpendicular to the charge transfer direction) allows the ion mobilities to be considerably enhanced. The experiments, which are based on MOF films, show a conductivity increase of up to 35%. In addition, mo…

Calcium ions released from alginate hydrogel promote wound healing by enhancing fibroblast activity.

Hydrogels are widely used as wound dressings owing to their biocompatibility, high water content, and ability to mimic extracellular matrix functions. Alginate (ALG) is a natural polysaccharide that forms ionically crosslinked hydrogels in the presence of calcium, where Ca2+ not only stabilizes the crosslinked network but also regulates cell behavior, which is essential for wound repair. In this study, ALG hydrogels were prepared with CaCl2 at 20, 50, 100, and 200 mM, and their gelation, rheological properties, calcium ion release, and cellular responses were systematically evaluated. The 100 …

From blueprint to build: Metal ions in peripheral nerve development and engineering regeneration.

Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) poses a substantial global health burden, affecting over 20 million individuals annually with frequent suboptimal recovery and persistent disability. The inherent limitations of nerve autografts, such as donor site morbidity and limited supply, underscore the clinical importance of nerve guidance conduits (NGCs) as a promising alternative. Nonetheless, the efficacy of current NGCs remains limited by their inability to recapitulate the spatiotemporally precise molecular cues of the native regenerative microenvironment. Our network meta-analysis highlights a signifi…

Coordination-Constrained Zinc Ions Transport in Solid-State Electrolytes: Mechanisms and Design Principles.

Zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are regarded as potential candidates for next-generation energy storage systems due to their intrinsic safety, low cost, and environmental sustainability. Solid-state electrolytes hold potential for effectively addressing issues in aqueous electrolytes. However, the development of solid-state ZIBs is fundamentally limited by the physicochemical characteristics of Zn2+. Due to the multivalent nature of Zn2+, they are subject to stronger coordination constraints, and Zn2+ migration is dominated by desolvation processes and coordination restructuring, contributing to slo

Alkali Ions Retained from Synthesis Govern Microstructure and Transport in Solution-Processed SnSe.

Alkali salts are widely used in solution processing, yet the corresponding cations are often assumed to remain in the liquid phase. Here, we show that alkali ions introduced during the solution synthesis of SnSe are retained through particle isolation and continue to influence the material during subsequent thermal processing, where they shape the evolution of the final polycrystalline material. Different SnSe powders were prepared using Li+, Na+, and K+ precursors, as well as tetramethylammonium (TMA+) precursors as a nonalkali reference for comparison, and all samples were consolidated under…

An ionic liquid mediated green emitting nanoprobe for selective detection of Hg2+ ions.

Mercury and its compounds pose serious health and environmental risks due to their high toxicity, persistence, and bioaccumulation, particularly in the form of Hg²⁺ ions. This study reports the synthesis of a yellowish-orange emitting ionic liquid (SLIL) via a simple ion-exchange method. The SLIL shows strong photoluminescence under 365 nm UV light, which changes notably when dispersed in water as a nanosuspension (nSLIL) in the presence of Hg²⁺ ions. The probe demonstrates excellent selectivity and high sensitivity, with nanomolar detection (LOD = 5.9 nM) and quantification (LOQ = 19.9 nM) li…

The Role of Metal Ions in Mitochondria: From Energy Metabolism to Cell Destiny.

Metal ions are indispensable for cellular life, as they maintain mitochondrial ion homeostasis and function as essential cofactors in mitochondrial energy metabolism, particularly within the electron transport chain (ETC) and the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle. Disruption of metal ion homeostasis, however, can precipitate excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, collapse of the mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm), and failure of cellular energy supply. These events ultimately culminate in mitochondrial dysfunction and trigger multiple metal ion-dependent cell death pathways, incl…

Oxidative Stress: The Role of Aluminum Ions in Copper Homeostasis Within the Neurons.

Aluminum (Al) and copper (Cu) homeostasis is critical for neuronal health. Disruption of their balance contributes to oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. Existing studies have reported a positive correlation between aluminum and copper concentrations in specific neuronal models. Such homeostatic imbalance may contribute to the activation of pathways related to apoptosis or cuproptosis through mechanisms including oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and glutathione depletion. Aluminum-copper dy…

ExD identification of C-terminal Ile/Leu in natural peptides using d-ions.

Although mass spectrometry remains the most reliable and widely used method for peptide and protein sequencing in modern proteomics, important challenges remain. Among the most persistent is the differentiation between the isomeric leucine and isoleucine residues. Electron-transfer/higher-energy collision (EThcD) implemented on advanced Orbitrap platforms has demonstrated strong performance through detection of diagnostic w-ions, allowing one to distinguish leucine from isoleucine. However, the EThcD approach is less efficient for distinguishing these several amino acid residues at C-terminal …

α-Al2O3 Functionalized with Lithium Ions Especially Useful as Inert Catalyst Bed Supports.

The alumina, in the form of α-Al2O3 tabular balls, considered in this study is a high-purity form of aluminum oxide that has been fired at high temperatures (well above 1900 °C), virtually removing porosity. However, the purity and inertness of the surface of the Al2O3 tabular balls minimize the catalytic activity, which is why lithium doping was tried. Thus, the target of this study was the effect of doping with lithium ions in some tabular balls of Al2O3 (the crystalline structure is corundum) on the improvement of the catalytic properties of alumina. This study examined the impact of a lith…

Cellular prion protein and calcium ions trigger the neurotoxicity of α-synuclein aggregates.

BACKGROUND: The aggregation of α-Synuclein (αS) into amyloid fibrils and their deposition in intraneuronal Lewy bodies are hallmark features of Parkinson's disease (PD) and other synucleinopathies. Among the molecular players implicated in αS toxicity, the cellular prion protein (PrPC) has emerged as a potential modulator of αS-neuron interactions. RESULTS: Using confocal microscopy, colocalization analysis and both siRNA-induced PrPC silencing and antibody-based blockade, we investigated the contribution of PrPC to αS-induced neurotoxicity in human iPSC-derived dopaminergic neurons, primary …

Solvation structure regulation of zinc ions with nitrogen-heterocyclic additives for advanced batteries.

Zinc-based battery performance is often hindered by side reactions, such as dendrite growth and hydrogen evolution, which are closely linked to the desolvation of hydrated zinc ions. This study demonstrates that the coordination microenvironment of zinc ions can be effectively regulated using poly-nitrogen heterocyclic compounds as electrolyte additives. With the composite electrolyte, the zinc electrode achieves reversible recycling for approximately 4000 h at a low nucleation overpotential (∼29 mV), demonstrating exceptional cycling stability. The solvation structure of hydrated zinc ions an…
