OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of copper deficiency on the nutritional status of iron, the expression of hepcidin mRNA and transferrin receptor mRNA in rats.
METHODS: Forty eight clean male SD rats were randomly divided into four groups according to body weight; and there were 12 rats in each group. The groups are normal iron and copper control group (group I), normal iron and copper deficiency group (group II), normal iron and copper slightly deficient group (group III), both iron and copper slightly deficient group (group IV). Serum, liver and spleen of rats were collected by the end of 8th

Many diseases, different nutritional, metabolic and hormonal changes, ageing and drugs can alter cognitive functions. Anemia via cerebral hypoxia and other possible mechanisms has been suggested to have a great influence on cognition. Iron deficiency anemia, the most common form of anemia, has been suggested to result in cognitive deterioration and alteration of neurological functions. Previous studies resulted in significant discrepancies considering correlation between anemia and cognitive achievement mainly because different or not sensitive enough tests used to measure cognition. We sugges

Iron deficiency is a frequent complication in chronically ill patients and in pregnant women. Iron status can now be characterised precisely and relatively easily by determining serum ferritin, transferritin saturation and if necessary hypochromic erythrocytes and the haemoglobin content of erythrocytes (CHr). Oral iron replacement is usually restricted by limited absorption and low tolerability. Intravenous iron therapy is possible in such cases and can be combined with rHuEPO (e.g. EPREX/ epoetin alfa) in severe cases. Iron saccharate (VENOFER) is commercially available in Switzerland and th

BACKGROUND: A 36-year-old Chinese woman presented with cutaneous lupus and was incidentally found to have iron-deficient anemia. She had a history of iron-deficient anemia 13 years previously, for which extensive investigations were carried out; the results of which were all normal. The patient also had pulmonary tuberculosis at that time, for which she received a full course of treatment. She required periodic blood transfusions and iron supplements to maintain her hemoglobin levels. She was subsequently discharged to a family clinic for follow-up until the current presentation.

BACKGROUND: Iodine deficiency produces the spectrum of iodine deficiency disorders (IDDs): endemic goiter, hypothyroidism, cretinism, and congenital anomalies. Other factors, including goitrogens and micronutrient deficiencies, may influence the prevalence and severity of IDDs and response to iodine supplementation. This cross-sectional, descriptive study was performed in 2003 on elementary school children of Semirom, a mountainous region of Iran, where goiter was hyper-endemic in 1994, but the goiter prevalence had not decreased as expected many years after salt iodization and iodine injectio

Anaemia was diagnosed in four adopted children during a standard screening examination 1-4 weeks after arrival. Further investigation revealed a number of causes which could then be specifically treated. The children were a girl aged 14 months from China with iron-deficiency anaemia, a boy aged 16 months from Nigeria with sickle cell anaemia, a girl aged 5 from Haiti who had alpha-thalassaemia, and a boy aged 7 from Brazil with spherocytosis. Iron deficiency is the most common cause of anaemia in childhood. However, in adopted children from sub-tropical areas other causes of anaemia like haemo

BACKGROUND: Postpartum anaemia is associated with breathlessness, tiredness, palpitations and maternal infections. Blood transfusions or iron supplementation have been used in the treatment of iron deficiency anaemia. Recently other anaemia treatments, in particular erythropoietin therapy, have also been used.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the clinical effects of treatments for postpartum anaemia, including oral, intravenous or subcutaneous iron/folate supplementation and erythropoietin administration, and blood transfusion.
SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group tr

Iron deficiency anemia is a hypochromic anemia in which hemoglobin poor synthesis is due to a decrease in the amount of iron in the body. The decrease of iron quantity has many causes: insufficient intake of aliments rich in iron (meat, viscera, green vegetables), increased necessities during growth period, pregnancy, erythrocytes hyperregeneration, high-performance sportsmen, increased loss by digestive way, genito-urinary way, respiratory, hemorrhagic syndromes. Clinically, symptoms and signs specific to all types of anemia and those specific to lack of iron occur besides the symptoms and si

Digestive and liver disease : official journal of the Italian Society of Gastroenterology and the Italian Association for the Study of the Liver2003eng
Iron deficiency anaemia is generally considered a sign of occult bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract, and standard care therefore includes evaluation of the gastrointestinal tract to rule out possible bleeding sites. However, it is often overlooked that iron deficiency anaemia may be the result of an imbalance between iron loss and iron intake, and may also be due to reduced absorption of iron from food, i.e., coeliac disease. The absorption of alimentary iron is not a simple process and the stomach plays a major role in this process of iron "digestion". This review presents evidence link

BACKGROUND: Patients with iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) are commonly referred to the gastroenterologists for exclusion of gastrointestinal (GI) pathologies. The British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) has published a guideline for management of IDA. As recommended by this guideline, all patients should have examinations of both upper and lower GI tract with the exception of pre-menopausal women younger than 45 years old. The primary aim of this audit was to determine how thoroughly patients referred to our unit at the Singapore General Hospital had been investigated. The secondary aim was to

BACKGROUND: Both iron deficiency anaemia and Helicobacter pylori infection are rare in developed countries. A possible connection has been suggested between these two diseases and our aim was to define the clinical picture and to study the effect of bacterial eradication in H. pylori colonized children with severe anaemia.
METHODS: Eight children with iron deficiency anaemia refractory to iron supplementation were examined with gastroscopy because of suspicion of H. pylori infection. Anaemia was treated with oral ferrous sulphate. Two patients needed blood transfusions. Eradication therapy wa

Coeliac disease can cause selective malabsorption and, therefore, a poorly specific clinical pattern. In the two cases of iron-deficiency anaemia described, targeted diagnostic procedures enabled to find an effective therapy. The identification of patients affected by coeliac disease in a subclinical phase may reduce the risk of autoimmune and lymphoproliferative diseases.

Serum erythropoietin (EPO) levels were determined in 30 children with iron deficiency anemia. The mean age of the children, hemoglobin (Hb) levels, serum EPO levels and log EPO values were 4.7 +/- 5 years, 6.7 +/- 1.7 g/dl, 2284 +/- 3177 mU/ml and 2.81 +/- 0.82, respectively. In 83 percent of the patients poor diet was the determined cause of iron deficiency and in the remaining 17 percent, chronic blood loss. A significant negative correlation was found between the log EPO values and Hb values (r = 0.62, p < 0.01). There was no significant correlation between log EPO values and the other para

Iron deficiency is a common pediatric problem affecting 20%-25% of the world's infants. Most commonly causing anemia, iron deficiency is also implicated in such neurologic sequelae as irritability, lethargy, headaches, developmental delay, and infrequently papilledema, pseudotumor cerebri, and cranial nerve abnormalities. Rarely has iron deficiency been recognized as a significant cause of stroke in the adult or pediatric populations. We report a series of 6 children, 6 to 18 months of age, who presented with an ischemic stroke or venous thrombosis after a viral prodrome. All patients had iron

BACKGROUND: Infants of low-income families have three times the risk of iron deficiency as those of families above the poverty level. Psychomotor deficits have been associated with iron deficiency once it produces anemia. High-risk infants are usually screened for iron deficiency between 9 and 12 months of age with a hematocrit measurement. This type of screening may miss iron-deficient infants who are not yet anemic.
METHODS: In the well-child clinics for low-income families in Houston, Texas, a hematocrit (Hct) < or = 33% is the standard screening criterion for iron deficiency. Three hundre

The relationship between iron status and capacity for IL-2 production by lymphocytes was assessed in 81 children from 6 mo to 3 yr of age selected at random from a population with low socioeconomic status, undergoing free systematic examination in four children's health centers in the Paris area. Iron deficiency was defined by the existence of at least two abnormal values among the three indicators of iron status: serum ferritin level less than or equal to 12 micrograms/L, transferrin saturation less than 12%, and erythrocyte protoporphyrin concentration greater than 3 micrograms/g hemoglobin.
