In our study of 1326 autopsied cases of congenital heart disease, we have encountered 3 cases of atresia of the common pulmonary vein. This is a rare condition of which, to the best part of our knowledge, only 19 cases have been reported so far. Interestingly, two of our cases were associated with isomerism of the right atrial appendages, and one also had a common arterial trunk. Reduction of allylic alcohols can be promoted efficiently by the supported ruthenium catalyst Ru(OH)x/Al2O3. Various allylic alcohols were converted to saturated alcohols in excellent yields by using 2-propanol without any additives. This Ru(OH)x/Al2O3-catalyzed reduction of a dienol proceeds only at the allylic double bond to afford the corresponding enol, and chemoselective isomerization and reduction can be realized under similar conditions. The catalysis is truly heterogeneous and the high catalytic performance can be maintained during at least three recycles of the Ru(OH)x/Al2O3 catalyst.

At present there is no reliable method of recognising atrial isomerism by two dimensional echocardiography. We therefore used two dimensional echocardiography to examine 158 patients including 25 with atrial isomerism and four with situs inversus. We report three babies with malformations of left-right asymmetry who were born to mothers with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. One infant had left isomerism and asplenia, one had polysplenia, and the third baby had situs inversus with a neural tube defect. A series of 1042 reports of necropsies on children dying at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh was reviewed. In this study, a boronate affinity material (FA-5) with a low pKa value was prepared to facilitate lactulose production. At physiological pH, 58.23 % of the B atoms in FA-5 existed in an sp3 hybridization state, and FA-5 demonstrated excellent adsorption capacity (94.78 mg/g) and selectivity (91.82 %) for lactulose from a 1:1 lactulose-lactose solution.
