Monitoring vector-borne diseases: A study in Italy and Greece.

Rapid urbanisation and environmental changes are reshaping mosquito population dynamics and the transmission of vector-borne pathogens. Culex pipiens and Aedes albopictus have successfully adapted to anthropogenic environments, becoming key vectors of emerging and re-emerging arboviruses and filarial parasites. This study conducted a comparative entomological and pathogen surveillance between 2022 and 2023 in central Italy and Crete to assess species composition, population dynamics, and circulation of arboviruses and filarial nematodes across different ecological contexts. In Italy, a total o…

Fever from the shadows: Borrelia duttonii in a migrant in Italy.

In a striking diagnostic breakthrough, a Senegalese man arrived at SS. Annunziata Hospital in Chieti gripped by relentless high fever, throbbing headache, vomiting, right hypochondrium tenderness, lower limb myalgias, generalized lymphadenopathy, conjunctival injection, and photophobia-signaling a systemic infection with neurologic red flags. Labs showed thrombocytopenia, elevated CRP, procalcitonin, and indirect hyperbilirubinemia; lumbar puncture was negative. The game-changer came during peak fever: an extraordinarily rare visual spectacle on peripheral blood smear-motile spirochetes "danci

Quality of data from cancer registries in Italy: An appraisal.

We report the results of the quality assessment on data collected by cancer registries belonging to the Italian network of Cancer Registries (AIRTUM). For all malignant cancers diagnosed in 2013-2017, overall percentages of cases known from the death certificate only (DCO), and those of cases with cyto-histological confirmation (MV), were provided. The overall percentage of DCOs was small (1.2 %). The percentage of microscopic verification was overall high (87.6 %), with some variations among registries. DCO proportion varied from 0.1 % for cutaneous melanoma to 3.8 % for liver and pancreatic

Health hazard discrimination or prejudice? A correspondence experiment in Italy.

We study how infectious-disease threats can spill over into discriminatory behavior. Using early COVID-19 in Italy as a case study, we ran an email correspondence experiment with 5356 tourism providers, randomly varying the sender's location and surname to signal origin from areas differentially hit by the first wave. Requests signaling origin from a highly affected area received about 5 percentage points fewer replies and more rejections than observationally equivalent requests; the penalty concentrated on North-sounding surnames and was absent for South-sounding surnames from the same city, …

[New Pandemic Plan in Italy: the central role of epidemiology].

The experience of the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for a radical rethink of pandemic preparedness in Italy. The new National Pandemic Plan, currently under discussion at the interregional level, represents a crucial opportunity to translate lessons learned into operational tools. In emphasizing the centrality of epidemiology in prevention, early surveillance, and timely response to health emergencies, structural and organizational criticalities of the current system are highlighted. Among the main recommendations: overcoming regional fragmentation, ensuring interoperable information …

The Fourth Survey on the Activity of Human Milk Banks in Italy.

BACKGROUND: Scientific literature confirms the benefits of mother's own milk (MOM) for both term and preterm infants. The feeding of pathological newborns, in particular the very low birth weight infants (VLBWIs), is dependent on human milk. When MOM is not available, pasteurized donor human milk obtained from a recognized Human Milk Bank (HMB) is the best alternative. RESEARCH AIMS: This survey aims to evaluate the activity of human milk banks (HMBs) in Italy in the years 2023-2024. METHODS: Following the previous three surveys performed in 2012, 2016, and 2022, a fourth survey related to 2…

Trend in the Diagnosis of Pyoderma Gangrenosum in Italy: A Multicenter Study.

INTRODUCTION: Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is a rare neutrophilic dermatosis characterized by painful, rapidly progressive ulcerations, often associated with systemic inflammatory diseases. Despite advancements in diagnostic criteria, PG remains a diagnostic challenge, and recent increases in reported cases may reflect improved recognition rather than true incidence. This study evaluates epidemiological trends in PG diagnosis in Italy (2013-2024) across four dermatology centers (Bologna, Milano, Pisa, Torino) to determine whether increased number of diagnoses are due to refined diagnostic methodo…

Evidence of ascariasis in a Celtic newborn from northern Italy.

BACKGROUND: Infections with Ascaris lumbricoides can be traced back to the late Pleistocene by palaeoparasitological analysis. Even today, Ascaris infections are still very common worldwide. OBJECTIVES: In a pilot study, soil samples from the pelvic area of ten individuals from the Celtic necropolis of Povegliano Veronese (northern Italy) were examined using palaeoparasitological methods. The burials date from the 3rd to 1st century Before the Common Era (BCE). METHODS: The palaeoparasitological methods already proven in earlier studies were applied. FINDINGS: Positive evidence of Ascaris e…

A Health Status Update of Myocastor coypus in Northern Italy.

Myocastor coypus is a pest animal present in Africa, Europe, North America and Asia that causes agricultural and ecological damages. Moreover, it has to be considered as a potential risk for public health. Forty-four coypus from the "Parco Naturale La Mandria" (Piedmont region, Northwest Italy) have been analysed. A complete necropsy and a whole histological evaluation of the liver, kidney and lung have been carried out on all the animals. Moreover, the positivity to Hepatitis E Virus (HEV), Encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV), Francisella spp., Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum have been i…

Resurgence of scabies in Italy: The new life of an old disease.

Scabies, an old parasitic disease with a worldwide presence, has witnessed a recent resurgence in many parts of the world even in the light of the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted a study on this resurgence in the Italian province of Messina, Sicily, evaluating the general features of affected people to better understand the possible modes of transmission. Specifically, we considered all the scabies notifications made in the period 2003-2022. Then, we focused on those cases occurred in the three-years period 2020-2022 carrying out an active surveillance by calling patients and asking them quest

Mortality of alzheimer's disease in Italy from 1980 to 2015.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate mortality for Alzheimer's Disease (AD) in Italy over more than three decades (1980-2015) and discuss the possible role of general and specific contributing factors. METHODS: Mortality data were extracted by the Italian National Institute of Statistics: crude mortality rates were computed for sex and age, considering the whole country and its five main geographical sub-areas. Rates were standardized in two ways: directly (annual mortality rates AMRs) and indirectly (standardized mortality rates, SMRs). SMRs were then used to evaluate geographical differences; to study mo…

Five Decades of HBV Infection in Italy: A Continuous Challenge.

In Italy, Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection has been characterized by several changes over the last five decades. In 2019, the incidence of acute HBV among subjects targeted by the vaccination campaign was 0 cases in the age group 0-14 years and 0.1/100,000 in the age group 15-24. Nowadays, the burden of different stages of HBV-related chronic liver diseases is minimal. Intravenous drug use is no longer a risk factor (O.R. 0.7; 95% C.I. 0.5-1.02) for acquiring acute HBV; the proportion of cases reporting this exposure fell from 29.8% to 3.3% over the last two decades. The key public health int…

Intersociety Position Statement on the Prevention of Ophthalmia Neonatorum in Italy.

There is currently no worldwide agreement on the real need to administer conjunctival antibiotics to neonates at birth to prevent neonatal conjunctivitis (usually defined as ophthalmia neonatorum) by Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Therefore, there is wide variability in antibiotic administration, conditioned mainly by the social and health context. In Italy, a law enacted in 1940 required doctors and midwives to administer ophthalmic prophylaxis with 2% silver nitrate to all newborns at birth. This law was repealed in 1975 and since then there has been no clear guidance on th…

Nocardia infections in Italy: from a local to a national view.

In this paper, we have described cases of nocardiosis that occurred in our hospital and examined the literature on other nocardiosis cases recorded in Italy. We have collected the clinical details of our recent cases and described them in full. Regarding the older cases in our hospital and the Italian cases present in the literature, we noted the clinical data, the Nocardia species involved, and the antimicrobial susceptibility reported. The survey was carried out on PubMed. The first of our cases is an elderly woman with compromised health who had a lung and bloodstream infection. A second ca…

Botulism in Cattle: A Case Report of an Outbreak in Sardinia (Italy).

Clostridium botulinum is the main causative agent of botulism in humans and animals. The ingestion of the botulinum neurotoxin, usually types C and D, has been shown to produce disease (neurological symptoms) in most botulism cases in cattle. We report an outbreak in Southern Sardinia that involved a livestock farm with 120 animals, 39 of which died. The aim of this report is to describe the course of this outbreak and the progression of symptoms up to the death of some animals; we also describe the therapeutic approach applied in this case and the analytical techniques used to diagnose the di
