In Vivo Imaging Uncovers the Migratory Behavior of Leukocytes within the Joints.

Leukocytes are blood-borne cells derived from the bone marrow that must migrate into tissues to mediate inflammation. Controlling this migra … ulation of immune cell trafficking. Here, we present a detailed protocol for in vivo imaging of the joints using a murine type II collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) model. Mice are immunized with type II collagen emulsified in complete Freund's adjuvant, and arthritis progression is monitored by clinical scoring and paw thickness measurements. At the peak …

Fatigue and damage evolution in wood T-shaped mortise and tenon joints.

Mortise and tenon joint is a key connecting component in timber-framed architecture. Accurately assessing the damage to joints is crucial for the structural design of wooden buildings. This study conducted fatigue tests at three stress levels (70%, 100%, and 130%) based on the maximum stress from static bending tests to analyze the impact of different stress levels on the fatigue performance of mortise and tenon joints. The results showed that the deformation increased as the stress level increased. The energy loss per cycle de-creased and then increased at 130% stress level, and remained esse…

Pull-Out Progressive Damage and Failure Analysis of Laminated Composite Bolted Joints.

Laminated composite bolted joints are increasingly used in the aerospace field, and their damage and failure behavior has been studied in depth. In view of the complexity and stability requirements of laminated composite bolted structures, accurate prediction of damage evolution and failure behavior is significant to ensure the safety and reliability of the structures. In this paper, a novel asymptotic damage model is developed to predict the damage process and failure behavior of laminated composite bolted joints. In this model, the modified Puck criterion and the maximum shear stress criteri…

Reconfigurable origami with variable stiffness joints for adaptive robotic locomotion and grasping.

With its compactness and foldability, origami has recently been applied to robotic systems to enable versatile robots and mechanisms while m … le heating. To demonstrate our concept, we fabricate an origami module with four variable stiffness joints (VSJs), allowing it to have freely controlled crease stiffnesses across its surface. We characterize the origami module's versatile motion when heating different VSJs with different temperatures. We further use two origami modules to build a two-leg …

Unveiling the macrophage dynamics in osteoarthritic joints: From inflammation to therapeutic strategies.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is an incurable, painful, and debilitating joint disease affecting over 500 million people worldwide. The OA joint tissues are infiltrated by various immune cells, particularly macrophages, which are able to induce or perpetuate inflammation. Notably, synovitis and its macrophage component represent a target of interest for developing treatments. In this review, we describe the latest advances in understanding the heterogeneity of macrophage origins, phenotypes, and functions in the OA joint and the effect of current symptomatic therapies on these cells. We then highlight t

Study on Shear Behavior and Failure Characteristics of Bolted Anisotropic Rock Joints.

Anisotropic discontinuity exists widely in rock masses of mines, tunnels, slopes, water conservancy and hydropower projects. The shear characteristics of bolted anisotropic rock joints are extremely important for the stability design of engineering rock mass. However, few scholars have studied the bolted anisotropic rock joint. The different rock properties on both sides of the rock joint, especially the different rock strengths, will greatly affect the deformation characteristics and failure mode of the rock mass. Based on this, a series of shear tests were carried out on the bolted anisotrop…

Influence of Repair Welding on the Fatigue Behavior of S355J2 T-Joints.

This paper investigated the effect of repair welding on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and high cycle fatigue properties of S355J2 steel T-joints in orthotropic bridge decks. The test results found that the increase in grain size of the coarse, heat-affected zone decreased the hardness of the welded joint by about 30 HV. The tensile strength of the repair-welded joints was reduced by 20 MPa compared to the welded joints. For the high cycle fatigue behavior, the fatigue life of repair-welded joints is lower than that of the welded joints under the same dynamic load. The fracture pos…

Numerical analysis of novel concrete filled K joints with different brace sections.

All over the world, truss structures are commonly used in long-span bridge. Since joint is the weakest part of this structure, this paper proposes a novel type in which different brace members are used in the concrete filled box section K-joints. This novel type is designed as rectangular compression brace with the brace width to chord ratio β < 0.8 and chord welded tension brace ( β = 1 ) . That configuration allows to reduce the gap, thus eliminate the secondary moment. Moreover, load transfer and failure modes are not similar to the ordinary. Numerical simulation is the used method of inv…

A Bio-Inspired Arched Foot with Individual Toe Joints and Plantar Fascia.

This paper presents the design and testing of an arched foot with several biomimetic features, including five individual MTP (toe) joints, four individual midfoot joints, and plantar fascia. The creation of a triple-arched foot represents a step further in bio-inspired design compared to other published designs. The arched structure creates flexibility that is similar to human feet with a vertical deflection of up to 12 mm. The individual toe joints enable abduction-adduction in the forefoot and therefore a natural pronation motion. Adult female bone data was obtained and converted into a CAD …

Monitoring recovery of joints after bleeding: Physical examination and ultrasound are complementary.

AIM: Traditionally, recovery after a joint bleed in people with bleeding disorders is evaluated by clinical symptoms. Following a bleed, however, asymptomatic joints may still show synovial hypertrophy and effusion on ultrasound. We evaluated the duration of full recovery from a joint bleed. Additionally, we determined how recovery differed when assessed by physical examination and ultrasound. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we investigated joint bleeds in elbows, knees and ankles of people with haemophilia or Von Willebrand disease who attended the Van Creveldkliniek between 201…

Aging Interfacial Structure and Abnormal Tensile Strength of SnAg3Cu0.5/Cu Solder Joints.

In this study, the interfacial structure and abnormal long-term increase of tensile strength in the interfacial intermetallic compounds (IMC … of the joint, immediately after the reflow, reached 81.93 MPa. The tensile properties of the solder joints weakened and then strengthened as they aged. After 200 h of aging at 150 °C, the tensile strength was 83.86 MPa, which exceeded that of the unaged solder joint interface, because the fracture mode of the solder joints changed during aging.

Radiomic Quantification for MRI Assessment of Sacroiliac Joints of Patients with Spondyloarthritis.

Spondyloarthritis (SpA) is a group of diseases primarily involving chronic inflammation of the spine and peripheral joints, as evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Considering the complexity of SpA, we performed a retrospective study to discover quantitative/radiomic MRI-based features correlated with SpA. We also investigated different fat-suppression MRI techniques to develop detection models for inflammatory sacroiliitis. Finally, these model results were compared with those of experienced musculoskeletal radiologists, and the concordance level was evaluated. Examinations of 46 co…
