Subchondral insufficiency fractures are non-traumatic fractures that occur immediately below the cartilage of a joint. Although low bone density may be present concurrently, it is not the underlying cause of subchondral insufficiency fractures in the majority of patients. Patients with subchondral insufficiency fracture characteristically have unremarkable plain radiographs, while MRI examination may reveal extensive bone marrow oedema and subchondral bone collapse. This article presents a 51-year-old postmenopausal woman, a physician, who had subchondral insufficiency fractures of the knee as

BACKGROUND: Patient-reported outcome instruments are frequently used for assessing clinical outcomes after injury and surgery. Previously re … e ranges, and percentiles on the KOOS were calculated by sex, age range, laterality, and history of knee injuries in the past year. Nonparametric statistical analysis and regression analysis were used to evaluate differences in KOOS values between 5 age ranges and between those with a history of knee injuries compared with uninjured participants.
RESULTS: Ther …

Knee dislocation with a common peroneal nerve injury is a serious problem. A case of multi-ligamentous knee injury with the unusual and interesting finding of a common peroneal nerve rupture incarcerated within the knee joint is presented. MRI and arthroscopic images are used to document this occurrence. To date, there are no published reports of a similar finding in the English orthopaedic literature. Level of evidence IV.

BACKGROUND: Occult osseous knee injuries, such as bone bruises, can produce persistent pain and functional loss. Although bone bruises cannot be identified through direct examination or traditional radiographs, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has emerged as an effective diagnostic method. Nevertheless, the natural history of these injuries remains to be fully defined. Therefore, we used MRI to detect and follow bone bruise injuries secondary to knee trauma.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed knee MRIs from patients with bone bruising caused by trauma. Occult injuries were initially identif…

Popliteal artery injury (PAI) is a feared complication during knee replacement. Our aim was to investigate those injuries that occurred in association with knee replacement in terms of the type of injury, treatment and outcomes. From our national vascular registry (Swedvasc) and the Swedish Patient Insurance databases a total of 32 cases were identified. Prospective data from the registries was supplemented with case-records, including long-term follow-up. We estimated the incidence during 1998 to 2010 to be 0.017%. In our series of 32 patients with PAI occurring between 1987 and 2011, 25 (78%

OBJECTIVE: This is the first report of successful allograft mosaicplasty treatment of a large osteochondral lesion of the knee caused by a blast fragment sustained during combat operations. The patient was able to return to active duty following rehabilitation.
METHODS: An active-duty infantryman sustained an osteochondral lesion of the medial femoral condyle caused by a metallic fragment of an explosively formed projectile. Initial treatment consisted of removal of the foreign body and primary closure. The patient continued to experience pain, mechanical symptoms, and repeated effusions afte

Knee locking is often caused by a torn meniscus or loose body. A rare cause of knee locking is a superior dislocation of the patella following trauma with less than 20 reported cases in the English literature. An unusual case of a locked knee secondary to interlocking osteophytes between the medial femoral condyle and the inferior pole of the patella without any history of trauma is presented.

The objective of this study was to explore relationships among constants used in musculo-skeletal models predicting torque generated about the knee by the quadriceps muscles. A model was developed and matched to data collected from individuals with spinal cord injury performing quadriceps contractions evoked using neuromuscular electrical stimulation. After fitting tendon slack lengths to the quadriceps muscles, the model was able to accurately match experimentally measured knee extension torques using previously reported values for the moment arm-knee angle and force-velocity relationships. BACKGROUND: Traumatic hip dislocation results from the dissipation of a large amount of energy about the hip joint. Clinically, these forces … indings.
CONCLUSIONS: The present study provides evidence of a high rate of associated ipsilateral knee injuries in patients with a traumatic hip dislocation. Bone bruises may provide a plausible explanation for persistent knee pain following a traumatic hip dislocation. The liberal use of magnetic resonance imaging is recommended for the evaluation of these p …

BACKGROUND: Athletic capability is paramount for survival in military basic training and successful service. Orthopedic conditions are common reasons for hospitalization and premature discharge of military recruits. Medical fitness for military service is determined through a medical examination. Individuals medically disqualified may receive a waiver to enter the service on a case-by-case basis. This study was carried out to determine how individuals with a medical waiver for knee problems compared to recruits without a history of knee injury regarding hospitalization and military discharge.

The purpose of the present study was to assess the relationship between the isometric and isokinetic peak torques (speed of movement 0, 60, 180 deg/sec) and the total work output of multiple contractions (180 deg/sec) of the quadriceps and hamstrings in 68 patients having seven years earlier a hemarthrotic knee injury. At every test speed the Pearson product moment (r) and the Spearman rank (rs) correlation coefficients between the peak torque and the total work were highly significant (p less than 0.001) for the quadriceps and hamstrings in the uninjured (r = 0.74-0.92, rs = 0.75-0.93) as wel

BACKGROUND: External mechanical stress plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of knee osteoarthritis. Piezo1 can sense mechanical stress changes on the surface of various cell types and convert them into bioelectrical signals to regulate cellular functions. Therefore, our study aimed to investigate the role of Piezo1 in mechanically induced KOA and elucidate its underlying mechanisms.
METHODS: In this study, we employed various techniques to assess the effects of mechanical stress on knee joint cartilage in vivo and in vitro experiments. In vivo, we performed Micro-CT scanning, H&E staining
