Inhibitory effect of chlorpromazine on nematode eggs and larvae.

Chlorpromazine inhibited the hatching of eggs of the parasitic nematode Haemonchus contortus and the free-living nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. In both species, hatching occurred at a concentration of 100 microg/ml but was almost totally blocked at 400 microg/ml. In the case of C. elegans, the effect was shown to be reversible by removal of chlorpromazine after exposure of the eggs to the drug for 1 hr. Caenorhabditis elegans larvae that hatched in a chlorpromazine concentration of 100 microg/ml were killed, but those that hatched in a concentration of 6.25 microg/ml were not. Taken together…

Efficacy of dressings for killing larvae of the sheep blowfly.

Resistance to organophosphorus (OP) insecticides in the Australian sheep blowfly has decreased the larvicidal effectiveness of several popular products used as dressings for flystrike. Laboratory bioassays in which near full-size Australian sheep blowfly larvae were immersed in flystrike dressings at registered concentrations for times ranging from 5 to 180 s indicated that none of the products was completely effective in killing highly OP-resistant larvae. Several products performed poorly, even against a susceptible population. Effectiveness did not always reflect the concentration of active…

Nasal myiasis due to Oestrus ovis larvae.

Herein we report our experiences in managing nasal infestation due to fly larvae in an urban population. The nasosinus location is infrequently seen in cases with human infection. The life cycle of the fly (Oestrus ovis) is discussed in view of the clinical features of our case.

Cryopreservation of Trichinella spiralis muscle stage larvae.

A cryopreservation protocol for Trichinella spiralis muscle stage larvae is described. Larvae are pretreated in 10% bile at 37 degrees C for 1 hr to induce an increase in surface permeability, than incubated in 20% v/v ethanediol at 37 degrees C for 10 min, transferred to 0 degrees C for a second incubation step of 15 min in a v/v mixture of 33% ethanediol: 33% methanol: 34% saline at 0 degrees C followed by rapid cooling (approximately 5,100 degrees C min-1) of aliquots distributed onto glass coverslips. The larvae are thawed by dropping the coverslips into 2 ml saline at room temperature (20…

Trochlear nerve regeneration in Xenopus laevis larvae.

The trochlear nerve of Xenopus laevis larvae was sectioned in the orbit, and the nerve distal to the section was removed, so that it could not serve to guide the return of the regenerating nerve to the superior oblique muscle (SOM). In a second series, in addition to removing the distal nerve segment, the SOM was removed or damaged. The regeneration pattern of the trochlear nerve fibers was recorded in situ at 1 to 5-day intervals with the aid of methylene blue staining. The early growth or regenerating fibers was multidirectional; only some fibers encountered the SOM by day 6 or 7; others rea…

Tracking radioactive larvae of Strongyloides ratti in the host.

Infective larvae of homogonic Strongyloides ratti grown in faecal culture with 32P or 75Se acquired a significant amount of radioactivity which was firmly attached to them. Heating removed most of the 32P but left 75Se in place. Subcutaneous injection of virgin and nursing mother rats with living and heat-killed radioactive larvae resulted in a pattern of labelling in the small intestine of injected animals and, in the case of 75Se, those of suckling pups, which can only be explained if labelled worms follow the natural migratory routes. The use of this tool in migratory studies is discussed, …

Loss of filarial larvae in a natural mosquito population.

Analysis of log normal parasite densities of Wuchereria bancrofti in the mosquito Culex pipiens fatigans collected in the suburbs of Colombo, Sri Lanka, has shown a decreasing parasite load with age of infection. The median density of microfilarial intake in the natural population was 10.3, but this had decreased to 2.6 by the infective stage. Of the total microfilariae ingested, 51.9% were found in the thorax 12--17 hours after infection of the mosquitoes in the laboratory. Further decrease in parasite density during development could not be attributed to filarial mortality in the mosquito bu

On the escape of infective filarial larvae from the mosquitoes.

Experimentally infected females of Culex pipiens fatigans carrying infective larvae of Wuchereria bancrofti were fed, on the 16th day p.i., on four different solutions, which were offered "cold" (24 degrees C) or "warm" (34 degrees C) in Petri dishes as open fluids. Thus the sucking mosquitoes did not have to bend their labia. Only the "warm" human serum stimulated any considerable number of infective larvae (24.8%) to leave the mouthparts of the mosquitoes. 1289 infective C. fatigens females lost only an estimated 6.4% of their infective larvae of W. bancrofti, when they were maintained on su…

A fatal case of strongyloidiasis with Strongyloides larvae in the meninges.

A case of fatal strongyloidiasis associated with pyogenic meningitis in an adult male African is reported. Strongyloides larvae were present in the purulent exudate in the the meninges, an observation not, to the authors knowledge, hitherto reported in man. Fatal strongyloidiasis due to autoinfection has been reported by several authors and De Paula (1962) reviewed the literature in 40 cases and added 10 others which he had studied. In Uganda fatal cases have been reported by Craven et al. (1971) and Poltera (1974). Although in some cases of fatal strongyloidiasis there was associated pyogenic…
