Compte rendu The canine hookworm Ancylostoma caninum: A novel threat for anthelmintic resistance in Canada.

The canine hookworm Ancylostoma caninum is one of the most prevalent parasitic nematodes in dogs worldwide and has the potential for zoonotic transmission to humans, including the development of cutaneous larva migrans. Recent confirmation of anthelmintic resistance (AR) in A. caninum to several anthelmintic classes, mainly in the USA, indicates the potential for this scenario in Canada. We consider various factors that may lead to resistant isolates in Canada, such as the widespread use of antiparasitic drugs without the assessment of efficacy; increased A. caninum prevalence in various Canad…

Skin infections in returned travelers: an update.

Dermatologic manifestations of travel-related illness are particularly vexing due to the broad differential diagnosis and clinicians' unfami … diagnosis. This is followed by a discussion of six important clinical syndromes including cutaneous larva migrans (CLM), cutaneous leishmaniasis, tungiasis, myiasis, antibiotic-resistant skin and soft tissue infection, and selected infections associated with fever and rash (e.g., measles, chikungunya virus infection, dengue fever, rickettsial spotted fevers). F …

Intestinal parasites of raccoons (Procyon lotor) from southwest British Columbia.

This is the first extensive survey of metazoan parasites (particularly of the roundworm Baylisascaris procyonis) from the intestines of racc … environmental contamination and, thus, human and animal exposure to infectious eggs. Prevention of larva migrans is discussed, particularly for people in contact with raccoons in wildlife rehabilitation centers.

Gnathostomiasis in wild boars from Japan.

Gnathostoma doloresi, a nematode parasite producing ulcerative and/or granulomatous lesions in the gastric wall of domestic pigs and wild boars (Sus scrofa leucomystax) throughout southeastern Asia, is an important zoonosis causing cutaneous larva migrans in humans. Patients infected with G. doloresi have been found yearly in the vicinity of Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan. Adult nematodes were found in 31 of 32 wild boars captured at two different geographic locations in the prefecture, a location in the high mountains and one at sea level. The parasite-free animal had gastric lesions typical of a…

[Pathology of travelers in the Antilles. Role of imported metropolitan pathology].

A preliminary and retrospective review--with a southern perspective--of some traveller's pathologies, mostly imported, and leading to hospit … r, antigraft rejection or antinfective (AIDS) agents. Much more familiar to us are photodermatitis, larva migrans, dengue, or ciguaterra, locally acquired. On the other hand some pathologies are quite "exotic" to us: Kaposi sarcoma, Lyme, or Behçet disease, familial mediterranean fever, brucellosis.

Present and future: Infectious tropical travel rashes and the impact of climate change.

In this article, we discuss pertinent cutaneous findings with which patients may present after travel to tropical destinations. We address arthropod-borne infectious diseases such as cutaneous leishmaniasis, Chagas disease, cutaneous larva migrans, and myiasis. We discuss other relevant diseases with cutaneous signs such as monkey pox and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. We provide clinicians with information regarding the background, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of these tropical rashes. In addition, we address the impact that climate change will have on the temporal a…

[A case of hepatic eosinophilic granuloma, which needs distinction with metastatic liver cancer].

A 68-year-old man was referred to our hospital because of eosinophilia in peripheral blood and pancreatic tumor on abdominal US. He was accu … ose in the assay of multi dot-ELISA for parasite, hepatic eosinophilic granuloma caused by visceral larva migrans was accidentally complicated by pancreatic cancer, and operation for the pancreatic cancer was done. To bear this disease in mind and to research his life history, is important to diagnose hepatic multiple nodules with eosinophilia.

Rheumatoid factors in subacute bacterial endocarditis and other infectious diseases.

Rheumatoid factors (RF) occur during the course of various infections such as leprosy, infective endocarditis, tuberculosis, trypanosomiasis, visceral larva migrans, infectious mononucleosis, influenza A, hepatitis A or cytomegalovirus. When first described it seemed logical to assume that host-self-immunization with autologous immune complexes provided the initial stimulus for RF production. Subsequently extensive characterization of bacterial, parasitic and viral Fc receptors has suggested an alternative explanation for rheumatoid factor associated with infections. It seems possible that pat…

Xenodiagnosis to detect Borrelia burgdorferi infection: a first-in-human study.

BACKGROUND: Animal studies suggest that Borrelia burgdorferi, the agent of Lyme disease, may persist after antibiotic therapy and can be detected by various means including xenodiagnosis using the natural tick vector (Ixodes scapularis). No convincing evidence exists for the persistence of viable spirochetes after recommended courses of antibiotic therapy in humans. We determined the safety of using I. scapularis larvae for the xenodiagnosis of B. burgdorferi infection in humans. METHODS: Laboratory-reared larval I. scapularis ticks were placed on 36 subjects and allowed to feed to repletion.

First report about a cerebrospinal nematode infection in an alpaca (Vicugna pacos).

The number of New World camelids in European farms is rising and thus, the need for veterinary care towards these animals arises. However, v … ithin farm enclosures, suggesting an infection of the alpaca and the development of a cerebrospinal larva migrans. This zoonotic disease is characterized by aberrant larval migration that typically shows extraintestinal migration in dead-end hosts. The aim of this report is to sensitize practical colleagues towards this rare, but occasionally fatal infection in …

[Cutaneous myiasis].

Modern air travel facilitates the importation of tropical diseases. We saw a 24-year-old man who returned from South America with cutaneous myiasis caused by larvae of the human botfly Dermatobia hominis. The larvae were expressed by pressure from 2 lesions, on the neck and the loin, and the pockets were disinfected with alcohol. They closed and healed completely with a day.

[Prurigo and further diagnostically significant skin symptoms in strongyloidosis].

An increasing incidence of strongyloidosis must be expected in European countries as a result of the increasing numbers of immigrants, as well as holiday-makers returning from tropical regions. In addition to gastrointestinal symptoms, dermatological complaints are predominant. Only rarely are cutaneous symptoms the only clinical manifestation of disease. The penetration of filariform larvae may cause "ground itch." In cases of chronic disease, larva currens is the most obvious sign and consists of linear urticarial wheals evoked by larva migration. The most common non-specific symptoms are ra
