More hydatidosis cases were detected in an immunodiagnostic survey of rural schoolchildren from an endemic area in Argentina by the arc 5 double diffusion (DD5) test than by indirect hemagglutination (IHA) and latex agglutination (LA) tests. Evidence of infection was obtained by clinical, radiologic, echographic, and/or computerized axial tomography examinations in only one of three DD5-negative individuals, and in 2 of 4 students showing a questionable reaction of identity with arc 5 in DD5, who were positive in LA and/or IHA. DR antigen distribution was studied in 85 Blacks with either classical or definite rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Sixty-three were seropositive and 22 were seronegative by latex fixation titer. The frequency of DR4 was 7.41% in our control Black population (n = 162), 22.22% in the seropositive (0.01 greater than p greater than 0.001; RR 3.57) and 22.72% in the seronegative RA (0.01 greater than p greater than 0.001; RR 3.67). A method of immunization has been described which consists of the i. v. injection into rats of large latex particles coated with human gamma-globulin (HGG). The coated particles embolize the pulmonary capillary bed and induce blood eosinophilia, which correlated strongly with the development of lymphocyte responsiveness to HGG in vitro. Sequential histologic studies of the lungs including ultrastructural analysis suggest a delayed hypersensitivity reaction to the coated particles. These studies support the concept that the induction of blood eosinophilia may be mediated by T lymphocytes.

There are two well-characterized antigen-antibody systems which relate specificially to viral hepatitis B. Tests for HBsAg and anti-HBs are readily available and of great benefit to the diagnosis, prevention and understanding of hepatitis B. Tests for HBcAg and anti-HBc are still research techniques which requires further development before they can be used at the level of everyday medical practice.
