Introduction: Ankle sprain is one of the most common injuries in collegiate athletes, including runners. The purpose of the study was to examine whether runners exhibited compromised ankle stability, ankle position sense, and single-leg balance. Methods: Thirty-seven individuals (21 non-runners and 16 runners) participated in the study. To be included in the runner group, subjects were required to run greater than 150 minutes per week for the past three months. We used the Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT) to categorize ankle stability, and we used a dual-axis electronic goniometer to ex

PURPOSE: The Y balance test (YBT) is a screen of dynamic balance requiring stance leg balance while the contralateral leg reaches in anterior (ANT), posteromedial (PM), and posterolateral (PL) directions. YBT has been proposed as a screen for injury risk; however, limited research has examined the association between YBT and injury. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between YBT (asymmetry and composite score (CS)) and noncontact injury in a sample of Division I (DI) college athletes from multiple sports.
METHODS: DI college athletes were screened with the YBT during the

Gustilo Grade IIIB and IIIC open fractures of the lower extremity often involve complex wounds requiring bony fixation and soft tissue reconstruction. We present a case of a 32 year-old male who suffered a traumatic Gustilo Grade IIIB open fracture of the tibia and fibula with an extensive soft tissue defect. Reconstruction was first attempted with a turbocharged anterolateral thigh flap that failed due to venous thrombosis. Due to vascular injury, limited reconstructive options were available from the ipsilateral leg. Limb salvage was subsequently achieved with a chimeric cross-leg latissimus

Back and leg complaints were studied by using a questionnaire and medical examination in 183 male conscripts and relating the results to background variables, anthropometry, the isometric strength of large muscle groups, and endurance running. A history of sciatica was reported by 8%, lumbago by 13%, back injury by 13% and low back insufficiency by 63%. Weak trunk extensors were associated with a history of sciatica, weak trunk flexors with back injuries and with current backache at work/exercise. Weak leg extensors showed associations with a history of low back insufficiency and of sick leave

Motorcycles have emerged as a viable mode of transport for millions in the third world. Mufflers (exhaust pipes in some countries) remain a potential "Achilles' tendon" or a designing flaw in the mass-produced, economical motorcycles of the developing world. Owing to the excessive temperature they attain while the hot exhaust gases pass through them and their proximity to the lower limbs while riding a motorcycle, they can lead to burns of varying nature in the lower leg. This is a descriptive retrospective study of muffler-induced lower leg burns treated at our hospital from January 2008 to D

Oliver Sacks, the well known neurologist and writer, published his fourth book, 'A Leg to Stand On', in 1984 following an earlier essay 'The Leg' in 1982. The book described his recovery after a fall in a remote region of Norway in which he injured his leg. Following surgery to reattach his quadriceps muscle, he experienced an emotional period in which his leg no longer felt a part of his body, and he struggled to regain his ability to walk. Sacks attributed the experience to a neurologically determined disorder of body-image and bodyego induced by peripheral injury. In the first edition of hi

Iatrogenic arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is an unusual and potentially fatal complication of lumbar spinal surgery. The presentation of these injuries is usually late, with symptoms such as leg swelling or cardiac failure. It is crucial to suspect AVF in the patient which presents to emergency with lumbar spinal surgery history. The diagnosis is often based on imaging studies such as computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance (MR) angiography. Surgery was the first choice of treatment, but with recent advances in stent technology endovascular approach has become widely popular. We present tw

STUDY OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine sleep quality and presence of sleep disorders in participants with spinal cord injury (SCI).
METHODS: A web-based survey, available online from February 2011 to July 2013, using validated sleep questionnaires, advertised via the internet and locally through SCI consumer organizations in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, was designed to evaluate sleep in adults with self-reported SCI. Demographic characteristics and medical history were obtained from participant self-report.
RESULTS: In our study population, 70%

INTRODUCTION: Open lower leg fractures are the most common open fractures of the locomotor system and their treatment is associated with a number of complications.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the paper was to present the results of the treatment of 68 patients with open lower leg fractures, as well as the complications that accompany the treatment of these fractures.
METHODS: In the analyzed group, there were 45 (66.18%) men and 23 (33.82%) women. The majority of patients – 33 (48.53%) of them – were injured in motor vehicle accidents, whereas 24 (35.29%) patients sustained injuries due to falls f

Of 57 patients with arterial injuries, three died, eight had an amputation and 14 experienced various kinds of late sequelae. Four of the sequelae were due to inadequate primary surgical treatment: 1) A 16 year-old girl developed incapacitating claudicatio intermittens after a traffic accident causing serious contusions to the right leg. Angiography four years later showed occlusion of the popliteal artery, which was successfully reconstructed. 2) A 16 year-old boy had a femoral fracture with injuries to the femoral artery and vein. The vessels were reconstructed and circulation was restored,

OBJECTIVE: Anthropomorphic test devices (ATDs) are used to assess real injury risk to occupants of vehicles during injurious events. In the lower leg, values from load cells are compared to injury criteria developed in cadaveric studies. These criteria are typically developed with the leg in a neutral posture, whereas the ATD may assume a wide range of postures during safety evaluation tests. The degree to which the initial posture of an ATD has an effect on the measured forces and moments in the lower leg is unknown.
METHODS: A Hybrid III ATD lower leg was impacted in a range of postures und

BACKGROUND: Heart failure due to high cardiac output rarely occurs. Few cases of post-traumatic arteriovenous fistula (AVF) as a cause of high-output failure were reported in the literature.
METHODS: Herein, we report a case of 33-year-old male who was admitted to our institution due to symptoms of heart failure. He reported a gunshot injury of the left thigh 4 months earlier, when he had been shortly hospitalized and discharged 4 days later. Since the gunshot injury he had exertional dyspnea and left leg edema, so the diagnostic procedures were performed.
RESULTS: Clinical examination revea

Locomotion is necessary for survival in most animal species. However, injuries to the appendages mediating locomotion are common. We assess the recovery of walking in Drosophila melanogaster following leg amputation. Whereas flies pre-amputation explore open arenas in a symmetric fashion on average, foreleg amputation induces a strong turning bias away from the side of the amputation. However, we find that unbiased walking behavior returns over time in wild-type flies, while recovery is significantly impaired in proprioceptive mutants. To identify the biomechanical basis of this locomotor impa

Transdural herniations of the spinal cord are rare, and those occurring acutely after a spinal cord injury (SCI) are particularly unusual. In this report, the authors present the case of acute posttraumatic spinal cord herniation in a patient who sustained severe polytraumatic injuries. The clinical manifestations were acute flaccid paralysis of the right leg and rapidly progressive sensorimotor deficits of the contralateral leg. The herniation was surgically reduced. Postoperatively left leg paralysis was completely resolved. The authors review the pertinent literature, and suggest that, with

UNLABELLED: Soft-tissue injuries of the foot and ankle can vary from crushing to penetrating mechanisms. Degloving injuries of the lower extremity are the result of an entrapment between a fixed surface and a moving object. These injuries pose significant morbidity and potential complications (eg, infection) to the patient if prompt wound coverage is not initiated. The authors present a case of an extensive degloving injury to the foot, ankle, and lower leg from a forklift accident. With the collaborative effort of the podiatry and plastic surgery teams, the patient underwent serial debridemen
