The Landscape of Supportive Care Needs Among Prostate Cancer Patients in New Zealand: A Cross-Ethnic Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer (PCa) is a significant health burden within New Zealand (NZ). Survival gains from prostate cancer have created a shift in focus from survival towards quality of life (QoL) and supportive care during extended survivorship. METHOD: We launched a nation-wide cross-sectional survey and recruited three cohorts of 1000 men with prostate cancer (men diagnosed with prostate cancer within 1 year, between 1 and 3 years, and between 3 and 5 years) as well as an additional Māori men group (N = 4000 in total). The survey instruments measured quality of life, supportive care nee

A Case Report on Home-Based End-of-Life Care with Traditional Korean Medicine Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine for an Elderly Patient with Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Managing multiple symptoms in home-based palliative care (HBPC) is challenging. Acupuncture and herbal medicine have been widely used to alleviate symptoms in patients with cancer receiving palliative care, but their role in HBPC for nonmalignant diseases such as Parkinson's disease (PD) remains underexplored. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of an 86-year-old woman with end-stage PD who received HBPC. She suffered from seborrheic dermatitis, constipation, and dyspnea, which significantly impaired her quality of life. Conventional treatments provided limited relief, prompting

Integrated palliative care improves the quality of life of advanced cancer patients.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this research is to investigate the efficacy of integrated palliative care in enhancing advanced cancer patients' quality of life, alleviating pain, and improving psychological well-being through the development of a multidimensional hospice care model. METHODS: This study involved 150 advanced cancer patients who received palliative care at our institution from January 2020 to December 2023. Participants were randomly assigned into two groups: the control group (n = 75) received standard care, while the treatment group (n = 75) received integrated palliative care,

Palliative care principles in ALS.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease associated with progressive dysphagia, dysarthria, extremity weakness, and dyspnea. Although there are some disease-modifying pharmacological treatments available which can modestly slow disease progression, the disease is relentlessly progressive and is ultimately fatal. Patients living with ALS should be supported using the principles of palliative care, and in particular, the use of a holistic approach to support the patients and their families. Evidence would support management of patients living with ALS by a m

Knowledge, attitudes, and representations of caregivers of individuals with major neurocognitive disorders regarding palliative and end-of-life care: a narrative literature review.

BACKGROUND: Caregivers of individuals with major neurocognitive disorders often bear the responsibility of participating in decisions related to the provision of palliative care for their loved ones due to the loss of capacity to consent as the disease progresses. This role is highly significant, as caregivers can influence both the quality of life and life expectancy of those they care for. Since they make decisions based on their knowledge, skills, preferences, and values, It is essential to develop a more comprehensive understanding of theses concepts regarding palliative and end-of-life ca

Telephone interventions, delivered by healthcare professionals, for providing education and psychosocial support for informal caregivers of adults with diagnosed illnesses.

BACKGROUND: Maintaining care for ill persons in the community is heavily dependent on support from unpaid caregivers. Many caregivers, however, find themselves in a caring role for which they are ill prepared and may require professional support. The telephone is an easily accessible method of providing support irrespective of geographical location. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this review was to evaluate the effectiveness of telephone support interventions, delivered by healthcare professionals, when compared to usual care or non-telephone-based support interventions for providing education

Psychiatry: life events and social support in late life depression.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the association of life events and social support in the broadly defined category of depression in late life. INTRODUCTION: Negative life events and lack of social support are associated with depression in the elderly. Currently, there are limited studies examining the association between life events, social support and late-life depression in Brazil. METHODS: We estimated the frequency of late-life depression within a household community sample of 367 subjects aged 60 years or greater with associated factors. ''Old age symptomatic depression'' was defined using the Co

Integration of Patient-reported Outcome Measures in Pediatric Hematology: A Qualitative Methods Study.

Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are self-reported questionnaires that allow patients and families to evaluate health-related experiences without influence or oversight from health care professionals. This study aimed to rate the relevance of existing PROMs for pediatric hematology patients, as identified by a recent systematic review, as well as to evaluate the receptivity of electronic PROM integration into clinical practice. Focus groups and interviews were conducted with children (10) and parents (19) impacted by nonmalignant hematological disorders, as well as with health care pr

Preliminary Study of the Effects of a Dysphagia Support Group on Quality of Life.

PURPOSE: Dysphagia (swallowing difficulties) can greatly decrease quality of life for individuals with dysphagia and can lead to caregiver burden and third-party disability. Support groups have been shown to be effective in improving quality of life in a range of conditions, through allowing individuals to form connections with those with shared experiences and sharing and learning about relevant resources and coping skills. However, no research on the effects of dysphagia support groups on quality of life has been conducted. This preliminary study aimed to determine whether a virtual support

Correlates of improvement in quality of life among homeless persons with serious mental illness.

Longitudinal data from 4,331 homeless mentally ill clients at 18 sites participating in the Access to Community Care and Effective Services and Supports program were used to assess participants' quality of life over a one-year period. At baseline higher quality of life was associated with less severe depressive and psychotic symptoms, less use of alcohol and drugs, and more social support. At 12 months improved quality of life was associated with decreased psychotic and depressive symptoms, reduced substance abuse, fewer days of homelessness, and increased social support, income, employment, a

Facilitating home birth in perinatal palliative care: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal palliative care can offer compassionate support to families following diagnosis of a life-limiting illness, to enable them to make valued choices and the most of the time that they have with their newborn. However, home birth is usually only offered in low-risk pregnancies. CASE: A couple who received an antenatal diagnosis of hypoplastic left heart syndrome and who had made a plan to provide palliative care to their baby after birth requested the option of a home birth. POSSIBLE COURSES OF ACTION: Recommend birth at hospital or explore the possibility of a home birth w

"We are running on the fumes of goodwill" Professionals' experiences of delivering 24/7 end-of-life care to children and their families: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Despite recent improvements, there is still stark inequity in the funding and provision of 24/7 end-of-life care for children, resulting in many families not receiving the support they need. To inform, plan and implement service changes it is important to take account of what works in current contexts and existing models of care, and to learn how professionals 'on the ground' are currently experiencing 24/7 care delivery. METHODS: The study aimed to explore professionals' perspectives of delivering 24/7 paediatric palliative care and their expectations and needs of a new service.

Concurrent Care and Equity: Addressing Palliative Care Gaps for African American Men in Rural Communities with a Serious Respiratory Illness.

Hospice and palliative care are often hard to access for African Americans (AA) living in rural areas with serious respiratory illnesses. These services can improve symptoms, quality of life, and support for caregivers, but barriers remain. Under the Medicare Hospice Benefit, patients must stop curative or life-sustaining treatments for their terminal illness, which limits options for concurrent care. This is a major challenge for AA men, whose average life expectancy is 67.8 years-about 10 years shorter than the national average. They also experience more care transitions in the last 6 months

Caring to Learn and Learning to Care.

The increasing numbers of aging and chronically ill prisoners incarcerated in Western nations is well-documented, as is the growing need for prison-based palliative and end-of-life care. Less often discussed is specifically how end-of-life care can and should be provided, by whom, and with what resources. One strategy incorporates prisoner volunteers into end-of-life services within a peer-care program. This article reports on one such program based on focused ethnographic study including in-depth interviews with inmate hospice volunteers, nursing staff, and corrections officers working in the

A traffic light approach for treatment and supportive care stratification in lung cancer.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Comprehensive supportive care interventions for patients with lung cancer are being investigated in a range of ways, including: early palliative care, prehabilitation and rehabilitation. We review recent literature on supportive care and propose a traffic light system to individualise comprehensive supportive care. Green for those very likely to receive anti-cancer treatment, red for those very unlikely to receive anti-cancer treatment and orange where the chance of accessing treatment is uncertain. Comprehensive supportive care can be individualised based on the group a par

The influence of spirituality on community nursing practice and patient experience.

Spirituality plays a significant role in end-of-life and palliative care, influenced by patients' religious and cultural backgrounds. Facing the reality that one's own life or that of a loved one is nearing its end can evoke feelings of hopelessness, anxiety and depression. Spiritual practices, such as invoking the intercession of saints or patrons, can provide comfort and hope, and a sense of meaning during this challenging and difficult time. Integrating these spiritual interventions into palliative care can support emotional wellbeing and enhance the holistic care of patients and their fami

Older people receiving family-based support in the community: a survey of quality of life among users of 'Shared Lives' in England.

Shared Lives (adult placement) is a model of community-based support where an adult who needs support and/or accommodation moves into or regularly visits the home of an approved Shared Lives carer, after they have been matched for compatibility. It is an established but small service which has been used mainly by people with learning disabilities but which has the potential to offer an alternative to traditional services for some older people. However, there is little research on the outcomes for older users of Shared Lives. This paper presents findings from a survey of 150 older people using

Standards for the care of people with cystic fibrosis (CF); recognising and addressing CF health issues.

This is the third in a series of four papers updating the European Cystic Fibrosis Society (ECFS) standards for the care of people with CF. This paper focuses on recognising and addressing CF health issues. The guidance was produced with wide stakeholder engagement, including people from the CF community, using an evidence-based framework. Authors contributed sections, and summary statements which were reviewed by a Delphi consultation. Monitoring and treating airway infection, inflammation and pulmonary exacerbations remains important, despite the widespread availability of CFTR modulators an

Differences in care burden, burnout, depression, quality of life and sleep quality between family members and professional caregivers of palliative care patients.

BACKGROUND: The main aim of our study was to investigate whether there are differences in caregiver burden, burnout, depression, sleep quality and quality of life between family members and professional caregivers of palliative care patients. Furthermore, we examined the impact of burnout, depression, and sleep quality on the burden of care among primary caregivers of palliative care patients. Additionally, we investigated whether there were differences in these parameters among family members according to gender. METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved a total of 134 individuals, includ
