Collagen fibrils as skeletal frame in monkey trabecular meshwork.

In an attempt to identify the characteristic skeletal frame of the trabecular meshwork, the three-dimensional architecture of collagen fibrillar bundles (collagen bundles) was studied by applying the NaOH cell-maceration method to the anterior segment of cynomolgus monkey eyes. Collagen bundles in the trabecular meshwork were found to be continuous with thinner collagen lamellae in the peripheral cornea and with the collagen fibril plexus in the ciliary body. The collagen core in the uveal cord was columnar in shape and was arranged parallel to the long axis. Collagen bundles were arranged as

An improved method of intralamellar keratoplasty in rats.

Intralamellar keratoplasty in inbred rats is a valuable method for the investigation of corneal allograft rejection. Present methods of intralamellar corneal grafting are tedious and time-consuming. In addition, induction of neovascularization, a prerequisite to inducing graft rejection, is variable. In an effort to overcome these problems, the authors have developed an improved method of intralamellar keratoplasty. Intralamellar pockets are formed by introducing a 30-g needle into the corneal stroma near the limbus. Approximately 10-25 microliters of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (100 micrograms/m

De Novo L509P Mutation of the TGFBI Gene Associated with Slit-Lamp Findings of Lattice Corneal Dystrophy Type IIIA.

Background: Mutations of the transforming growth factor-β-induced (TGFBI) gene produce various types of corneal dystrophy. Here, we report a novel de novo L509P mutation not located in a known hot spot of the transforming growth factor-β-induced (TGFBI) gene and its clinical phenotype, which resembles that of lattice corneal dystrophy type IIIA (LCD IIIA). Case presentation: A 36-year-old man (proband) visited our clinic due to decreased visual acuity with intermittent ocular irritation in conjunction with painful recurrent erosions in both eyes for 10 years. Molecular genetic analyses reveale

Characterization of limbal explant sites: Optimization of stem cell outgrowth in in vitro culture.

Simple limbal epithelial transplantation (SLET) and cultivated limbal epithelial transplantation (CLET) are proven techniques for treating limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD). However, the precise regions that are most suitable for preparing explants for transplantation have not been identified conclusively. Accordingly, this in vitro study aimed at determining ideal sites to be selected for tissue harvest for limbal stem cell culture and transplantation. We evaluated cell outgrowth potential and the expression of stem cell markers in cultures from 48 limbal explants from five cadaveric donors.

The Effect of Limbal Fenestrations on Scleral Lens-Induced Central Corneal Oedema.

PURPOSE: Persistent corneal oedema can lead to reduced visual performance and longer-term ocular complications in eyes with reduced endothelial cell function. The aim of this study was to quantify the effect of incorporating limbal scleral lens fenestrations on central corneal oedema. METHODS: Twenty young healthy adults (mean age ± standard deviation 32 ± 11 years) with normal corneas wore non-fenestrated and fenestrated (3 × 1 mm limbal fenestrations separated by 120°) OneFitMed+ scleral lenses in both eyes (on separate days) for 3 h. All other scleral lens parameters were held constant exc

[Research progress on imagine diagnosis of limbal stem cell deficiency].

Limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD) is an ocular surface disease resulting from a reduction and/or dysfunction of limbal stem cells. The symptoms of LSCD are non-specific and can be difficult to distinguish from other ocular surface diseases through slit-lamp examination. Impression cytology is currently considered the gold standard for LSCD diagnosis; however,it is a qualitative method with low sensitivity. Nonetheless, emerging imaging techniques offer quantitative diagnosis and staging of LSCD. This review article examines four imaging methods and their associated parameters for diagnosing LS

Amniotic Membrane Transplant with a Special Technique (Motowa's Sandwich Technique) in Mooren's Ulcer.

To illustrate amniotic membrane transplant (AMT) with a novel surgical technique ("sandwich technique") for treating patients with malignant Mooren's ulcer. A case report of a patient with bilateral, malignant Mooren's ulcer who had undergone systemic steroid therapy and topical immunosuppresive therapy to stabilize his condition. However, perforation of cornea occurred in one eye. AMT with a new surgical technique ("Motowa's sandwich technique") was performed to treat this case. On the 1(st) day postoperatively, there was no pain, no photophobia, and visual acuity was same as preoperatively.

Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma in conjunctiva.

A case of primary mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma (marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of MALT according to WHO classification) in conjunctiva, which presented as a slowly growing salmon-colored mass at limbus of left eye is reported. Histological examination revealed a diffuse low-grade lymphoma. Immunohistochemical analysis using monoclonal antibodies showed that the tumor cells are leukocyte common antigen (CD45)+, CD20+, CD3-, CD5-, CD10- and CD43-, which confirmed the B-cell lineage of lymphoma. The case is being reported for its rarity and clinical importance of recognizing s
