Diplotaxis muralis as an Emerging Food Crop: Chemical Composition, Nutritional Profile and Antioxidant Activities.

Diplotaxis muralis (L.) DC (Brassicaceae) is an edible plant commonly used in Mediterranean diets. This study investigates its nutritional composition, secondary metabolites, and antioxidant activity. The results show that this plant is rich in fibre and essential minerals. Analysis of amino acids shows a diverse profile, with glutamic acid and aspartic acid being the most abundant. Regarding fatty acids, α-linolenic acid was identified as predominant. Importantly, levels of toxic metals such as cadmium, lead, and mercury were found to be within established safety limits, confirming the plant'

Association of birth outcomes with maternal and infant FADS1 rs174547 genotypes in Japanese participants.

N-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3LCPUFAs) are crucial for child growth and development particularly for fetal growth in utero and brain development and function. This study examined the relationship between birth outcomes and FADS1 rs174547 genotypes in Japanese mothers and infants. The study included 406 mothers and 373 infants, i.e., 373 infant-mother pairs, from a supplementary survey of the Japan Environment and Children's Study. Multiple regression analysis revealed that infants with the CC genotype had significantly smaller head circumference at birth compared to those with

Nutrient Combinations Sensed by L-Cell Receptors Potentiate GLP-1 Secretion.

Obesity is a risk factor for cardiometabolic diseases. Nutrients stimulate GLP-1 release; however, GLP-1 has a short half-life (<2 min), and only <10-15% reaches the systemic circulation. Human L-cells are localized in the distal ileum and colon, while most nutrients are absorbed in the proximal intestine. We hypothesized that combinations of amino acids and fatty acids potentiate GLP-1 release via different L-cell receptors. GLP-1 secretion was studied in the mouse enteroendocrine STC-1 cells. Cells were pre-incubated with buffer for 1 h and treated with nutrients: alpha-linolenic acid (αLA),

Effects of donepezil treatment on plasma and urine metabolites in amyloid beta-induced Alzheimer's disease rats.

Accumulated clinical and biomedical evidence suggests that abnormalities in systemic metabolic processes such as fatty acid and amino acid metabolism can affect the brain function and behavior of various central nervous system diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). In this study, metabolic profiling was used to investigate changes in plasma and urine metabolites following stereotactic injection of amyloid β (Aβ) and treatment with donepezil in rats. Aβ causes cognitive impairment, while donepezil treatment successfully improves memory impairment. Donepezil improves Aβ-induced plasma fatty

Bio-Guided Fractionation and Molecular Networking Reveal Fatty Acids to Be Principal Anti-Parasitic Compounds in Nordic Seaweeds.

Widespread use of antimicrobial drugs has led to high levels of drug-resistance in pathogen populations and a need for novel sources of anti-bacterial and anti-parasitic compounds. Macroalgae (seaweed) are potentially a rich source of bioactive compounds, and several species have traditionally been used as vermifuges. Here, we investigated the anti-parasitic properties of four common cold-water Nordic seaweeds; Palmaria palmata (Rhodophyta), Laminaria digitata, Saccharina latissima and Ascophyllum nodosum (Ochrophyta, Phaeophyceae). Screening of organic extracts against helminths of swine (Asc

Placental metabolic profiling in gestational diabetes mellitus: An important role of fatty acids.

AIM: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is the most common metabolic disorder during pregnancy. Accumulating studies have reported metabolites that are significantly associated with the development of GDM. However, studies on the metabolism of placenta, the most important organ of maternal-fetal energy and material transport, are extremely rare. This study aimed to identify and discuss the relationship between differentially expressed metabolites (DEM) and clinical parameters of the mothers and newborns. METHODS: In this study, metabolites from 63 placenta tissues (32 GDM and 31 normal contr

[Vegetarian diets in the nutrition of pregnant and breastfeeding women].

Pregnant and breastfeeding women who eat vegetarian are a source of much controversy. This is the result of concern that eliminating some or all animal produce may lead to nutritional deficiencies and thus adversely affect the mother's and child's health. The American Dietetic Association's position is that appropriately planned vegan, lacto-vegetarian and lacto-ovo-vegetarian diets ensure a normal course of pregnancy and lactation. However, in practice the balancing of such a diet can pose certain difficulties, especially for individuals without the necessary experience or knowledge about nut

Polyunsaturated fatty acids induce modification in the lipid composition and the prostaglandin production of the conjunctival epithelium cells.

BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to evaluate whether polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) such as γ-linolenic acid (GLA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), as found in the diet, may affect the lipid composition of conjunctival epithelium and whether these modifications affect prostaglandin (PG) production after inflammatory stimulation. METHODS: Chang and IOBA-NHC conjunctival human cells were treated with GLA and/or EPA at 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, or 50 μg/ml for 72 h and then were stimulated with interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) for 48 h. Changes in the composition of neutral lipids and phospholipids wer

[Inhibitory effects and chemical basis of cornstalk on the growth of Alexandrium tamarense].

To provide more information on new algaecide with high efficiency, ecological safety and selectivity, effects of corn stem and leaves on the growth of Alexandrium tamarense were observed. The roles of microorganism in the inhibition were assessed. The inhibitory activities of different solvent extracts from the corn leaves were discussed and the potential antialgal chemicals in corn leaves were analyzed by GC-MS. Cornstalk is shown to have distinctly inhibitory effect on A. tamarense, and the inhibition of corn leaves is stronger than that of the corn stem. 0.5 g/L of the corn leaves inhibit A

A lipid-hydrolysing activity involved in hexenal formation.

Short-chain aldehydes such as (3Z)-hexenal and n-hexanal are formed from lipids through sequential actions of lipid-hydrolysing, lipoxygenase and fatty acid hydroperoxide lyase activities. The aldehydes are formed upon wounding of plant tissues, and are reported to have bactericidal and fungicidal activities. Furthermore, it has been reported that the aldehydes can induce expression of a subset of genes involved in disease resistance and that they are involved in a defence response against insect herbivores. Although several genes encoding lipoxygenases and the lyases have been isolated, and c

Androgen action: molecular mechanism and medical application.

Androgen action in many organs, such as prostate and skin, is dependent on the conversion of testosterone by 5 alpha-reductase to 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone. 5 alpha-Dihydrotestosterone then binds to the androgen receptor to regulate specific gene expression. Inhibitors of 5 alpha-reductase are useful for the selective treatment of prostatic cancer, benign prostate hyperplasia, acne, baldness and female hirsutism, without affecting spermatogenesis, sexual behavior and smooth muscle growth, that do not require the conversion of testosterone to 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone. Experimental models for nutritional myopathy.

Nutritional myopathy is a disease affecting young ruminants. The aetiological factors and their relative importance in disease development have been explored. A theoretical model has been developed and tested experimentally. The disease can be produced consistently using a recently developed vitamin E- and selenium-deficient diet. Disease can occur spontaneously in animals maintained on this diet alone over an extended period. Alternatively, myopathy can be induced in deficient animals by feeding polyunsaturated fatty acids such as linoleic and linolenic acid from corn and linseed oils respect

Evaluation of aphid resistance on different rose cultivars and transcriptome analysis in response to aphid infestation.

BACKGROUND: The rose is one of the most important ornamental flowers in the world for its aesthetic beauty but can be attacked by many pests such as aphids. Aphid infestation causes tremendous damage on plant tissues leading to harmed petals and leaves. Rose cultivars express different levels of resistance to aphid infestation yet the information remains unclear. Not only that, studies about the transcriptional analysis on defending mechanisms against aphids in rose are limited so far. RESULTS: In this study, the aphid resistance of 20 rose cultivars was evaluated, and they could be sorted in

Integrated Transcriptomic and Metabolomic Analysis Reveals Key Genes in Fatty Acid and Flavonoid Biosynthesis in Macadamia Nut (Macadamia integrifolia).

bHLH transcription factors are central to plant development and to the metabolism of fatty acids and flavonoids. Through the transcriptomic, metabolomic, and phytohormone/elemental profiling of two macadamia varieties with divergent fatty acid content, 'Guire No. 1' (GR1) and 'A4', we identified 142 MibHLH transcription factors, classified into 21 subfamilies, of which 14 show collinearity with Arabidopsis AtbHLH members. MibHLH46 was markedly differentially expressed, and its expression strongly correlated with that of fatty acid biosynthesis genes. Promoter analysis further revealed abundant

The role of topical dermocosmetics in acne vulgaris.

Acne is a common chronic inflammatory disease and treatment modalities based on acne severity are well established. The role of dermocosmetics in dermatology, and in particular acne, is becoming more important as more research elucidates the mechanisms of action of products in the pathogenesis of acne. Dermocosmetics have the potential to be used as monotherapy or in combination with medical treatment. Therefore, it has become important for dermatologists to understand dermocosmetics to effectively and appropriately advise patients on their use. The objective of this review was to provide new

Ubiquinone-10 protects neurons from virus-induced degeneration.

Cultured neurons from rat dorsal root ganglia and cerebral cortex were infected with Sendai virus, which gives a productive replication with lysis of most neurons, and with the RW strain of mumps virus, which undergoes defective replication causing degeneration of only 30-40% of the neurons within 5 days after initial infection. In Sendai virus-infected cells the amount of polyisoprenoid lipids was enhanced. In mumps virus-infected cultures there were transient reductions in the contents of cholesterol, dolichol, and ubiquinone-9 in the cultures, whereas the reduction in the ubiquinone-10 leve

Positive effect of inoculation with an Aspergillus strain on phosphorus and iron nutrition plus volatile organic compounds in rice.

We explored the potential of a fungal strain Aspergillus costaricensis KS1 for modulating growth and nutrient mobilization in rice. At laboratory conditions, there was a decline in pH of the medium on inoculation with the strain and the production of citric acid was observed under broth conditions. Similarly, there was higher solubilization of tricalcium phosphate and siderophore production in liquid medium on inoculation with the strain. The effect of inoculation of KS1 was studied in rice and higher growth and yield were observed on inoculation compared to control. The content of phosphorus
