A case report ist given on a 54-year-old patient with the so called lipid island (xanthelasma) in the duodenal mucosa. Xanthelasmas are very rarely located in the duodenal mucosa. The diagnosis and differential diagnosis of this entity are reported. The relevance of histochemistry and immunohistochemistry for differentiation of signet ring carcinoma cells in the mucosa is discussed.

A 66-year-old female patient developed within 2 years clinical symptoms of hyalinosis cutis et mucosae due to a plasmocytoma with monoclonal IgG-light-chain gammopathy. The clinical diagnosis was supported by light- and electron-microscope studies. The form of hyalinosis cutis et mucosae described by Urbach and Wiethe is a genetic disease with its onset in early childhood. For this reason, we propose the designation "acquired hyalinosis cutis et mucosae" for the case reported here.

Male Fisher 344 rats were solely fed a choline-supplemented diet for 65 to 105 weeks or a choline-devoid diet for 24 to 102 weeks. Different kinds of disease of the gallbladder without stones are demonstrated. The indication for cholecystectomy is given by anamnesis, radiological findings and the exact exploration of the adjoining organs. There is made a difference between absolute and relative indications. Among 6,311 cholecystectomies there are 276 gallbladders without stones (4.37%). The results of postoperative controls are reported, more than 76% of the patients are absolutely free, 16% are relatively free of complaints.

Tissue and cultured fibroblasts derived from one patient with the classical findings of lipoid proteinosis have been used to examine pathologic mechanisms in the disease. Ultrastructural examination of the skin revealed not only extracellular deposits of finely granular, moderately electron dense material, but in addition the dermal fibroblasts characteristically demonstrated marked cytoplasmic vacuolization. Lipoid proteinosis caused specific changes in the brain, larynx, and cervical esophagus of a young adult man. Laryngography clearly depicts the distribution and degree of pharyngeal and laryngeal pathology. Florid calcification, conforming to the classical temporal lobe distribution, is documented by plain films and tomography. The clinical picture and the pertinent literature are reviewed.

The molar ratios of N-acetyl neuraminic acid, hexose, hexosamine, and sphingosine have been determined for the abnormal ganglioside in Tay-Sachs disease that was previously detected as a fast-moving band in thin-layer chromatography, and in two abnormal fast-moving bands of gangliosides from the cortex and white matter of the brain in cases of gargoylism and Niemann-Pick's disease. The fastest-moving ganglioside band in these two conditions contains neither hexosamine nor glucose.
