Percutaneous Lauromacrogol Foam Sclerotherapy for the Treatment of Acute Airway Compression Caused by Lymphatic Malformations in Infants.

Management of LMs still remains a challenge especially for those suffering from complications such as acute airway compression. In this study, we retrospectively evaluated the efficacy and safety of percutaneous lauromacrogol foam sclerotherapy for the patients with acute airway compression caused by lymphatic malformations (LMs) in infants. Five cases of infants with acute airway compression caused by LMs were treated with lauromacrogol foam sclerotherapy in the radiology department from February 2013 to August 2015 at Wuhan Medical and Healthcare Center for Women and Children, China. By CT e

Case report: Long-term local control of recurrent lymphatic malformations using minocycline sclerotherapy following surgical resection in a dog.

Lymphatic malformation is a benign congenital vascular anomaly that is rarely reported in veterinary medicine. Complete surgical excision is extremely challenging because the boundary between the abnormal and normal tissues is poorly defined, which frequently results in recurrence. A 3-year-6-month-old castrated male mixed-breed dog (Chihuahua × Miniature Dachshund) presented with recurrent lymphatic malformations in the left inguinal and peripenile regions. The lesion had previously been surgically excised at another hospital but recurred shortly after surgery. Despite long-term prednisolone

Diagnostic significance of ilioinguinal nodal uptake percentages in lower limb lymphoscintigraphy.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the significance of ilioinguinal nodal uptake percentages in the evaluation of lower limb lymphoscintigraphy. METHODS: Lymphoscintigraphy studies from 161 patients were retrospectively evaluated. Region-of-interest counts from the injection sites at baseline and from whole-body images at 120 min were corrected for count duration and radioactive decay; ilioinguinal nodal uptake percentages were then calculated for each lower limb. Nodal uptake percentages were compared between normal and abnormal findings in the corresponding limbs and among the study-specific

Reversal of secondary protein-losing enteropathy after surgical revision of a jejunal Roux-en-Y loop in a patient after liver transplantation.

Secondary protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) is a rare complication following pediatric liver transplantation (LT), mostly related to venous outflow obstruction of the liver. Here, we discuss a thus far unknown cause of secondary PLE following pediatric LT. A 7-month-old boy underwent LT with biliary anastomosis using a Roux-en-Y jejunal loop. Eleven months later he developed PLE. Routine diagnostic workup was negative. No hepatic outflow obstruction was detected during catheterization. Although the hepatic venous pressure gradient was slightly increased (10 mm Hg), there were no clinical signs

[Research progress on the application of ultrasound technology in the diagnosis and treatment of lymphedema].

Lymphedema is a chronic progressive disease caused by abnormal development of the lymphatic system or lymphatic reflux disorder caused by congenital or acquired factors, early diagnosis and treatment of lymphedema are crucial for controlling the patient's condition. Traditional imaging methods (such as lymphoscintigraphy and magnetic resonance lymphography) have problems such as high cost, radiation exposure, or technical limitations in the diagnosis and evaluation of lymphedema. Ultrasound technology has become one of the core tools for diagnosis and treatment of lymphedema due to its advanta

The molecular mechanism of Gorham syndrome: an update.

Gorham syndrome, also known as "vanishing osteopathy" and "invasive hemangiomatosis," is a rare clinical syndrome whose etiology is unknown and can invade the whole-body skeleton. At present, more than 300 cases have been reported at home and abroad, usually manifesting as spontaneous chronic osteolysis with no periosteal reaction at the lysis site and occult onset, often with fractures, scoliosis, chylothorax, etc. When waiting for medical treatment, the condition is serious, and the prognosis is poor. At present, there is no effective treatment. The main pathological manifestations of Gorham

A Case of Tropical Pulmonary Eosinophilia With Incomplete Response to Diethylcarbamazine Therapy.

Tropical pulmonary eosinophilia (TPE) is a specific pulmonary manifestation of lymphatic filariasis. There is overwhelming infiltration of eosinophils in the lung parenchyma in response to microfilaria. The characteristic features include paroxysmal respiratory symptoms, strikingly high blood eosinophil count, elevated level of immunoglobulin (Ig) E along with high titer of anti-filarial antibody. Treatment with diethylcarbamazine (DEC) has an excellent favorable response. However, recovery may often be incomplete. We present a case of a 36-year-old man with TPE who had complete symptomatic im

Multiple photopenic vertebrae in the bone scintigraphy of a young man with Gorham disease: CT and MRI correlation.

We report a rare pattern of extensive bone abnormalities on the Tc-99m MDP bone scintigraphy in a patient with Gorham disease. This rare condition is the result of vascular and lymphatic channel proliferation in bony structures which induce bone resorption. Our case is a 28-year-old man with a history of biopsy-proven soft tissue hemangioma in the left thigh, encountered with a recent diagnosis of multiple vertebral hemangiomata in the axial skeleton and progressive bony destructions in the pelvis on CT and MRI images, referred for bone scintigraphy. Multiple photopenic hemangiomata were noted

Yellow nail syndrome and bilateral cystic lung disease.

In patients with yellow nail syndrome (YNS), highly characteristic nail changes are often associated with lymphedema and respiratory disorders due to pleural effusions or bronchiectasis. We describe a 4-year-old girl with the YNS who also had cystic lesions of the lung, affecting first the left lower lobe and, after surgical resection of the involved segments, also the right lower lobe. We discuss the etiology of the pulmonary cysts and hypothesize that abnormalities in pulmonary lymphatic flow, characteristic of YNS, may have decreased lung tissue compliance and determined the unusual progres

Uremic pleuritis.

Pleural abnormalities of uremia have been recognized for many years but have been given little attention despite their high incidence. Mechanisms underlying pleural effusion relate to filtration forces across subpleural capillaries and lymphatic absorption, either of which can be abnormal in patients with renal failure. Uremic patients have increased susceptibility to many causes of pleural exudate. In addition, a specific uremic pleuritis has been characterized as necrotizing fibrinous sterile exudate that is often hemorrhagic. Spontaneous remission, often with recurrences, or constrictive pl

CT and MR imaging findings of lymphangioleiomyomatosis involving the uterus and pelvic cavity.

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a rare idiopathic disease and this is characterized by a proliferation of abnormal smooth muscle cells in the lungs and in the lymphatic system of the thorax and retroperitoneum. The female genital tract is rarely affected by LAM. We report here on the CT and MR imaging findings of extensive LAM involving the uterus and pelvic cavity, and this was seen as multiple cystic uterine and parauterine masses with internal hemorrhage in a young female with tuberous sclerosis complex.

Congenital penoscrotal lymphedema complicated by sepsis associated with a streptococcal infection.

Congenital lymphedema is a relatively rare disease caused by congenital abnormality of the lymphatic system. Although bacterial infection frequently causes complications with lymphedema, severe sepsis in congenital lymphedema of the genitalia has not yet been reported. We describe a patient with congenital penoscrotal lymphedema complicated by cellulitis, lymphangitis, and severe sepsis associated with a streptococcal infection. This case represents the importance of obtaining a detailed clinical history and physical findings.

[Diffuse cystic angiomatosis of bone. A report on one case followed-up over five years (author's transl)].

The authors report a case of diffuse cystic angiomatosis of bone. The follow-up over five years showed a dramatic worsening which has seldom been observed. The roentgenographic aspect of this rare disease seems always similar, but non specific. The pathologic diagnosis is difficult. The bony involvement is due to a widespread vascular dysplasia, and the final diagnosis relies upon the association with other arteriovenous or lymphatic disorders, or with an abnormal lymphogram.

Exploring the Properties and Preparation of Ethyl Cellulose-Ethanol Gel Sclerotherapy for the Treatment of Vascular Malformations following the 3R Principle.

Vascular malformations, including arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), venous malformations (VMs), and lymphatic malformations (LMs), carry a risk of rupture, bleeding, and significant morbidity. AVMs are high-flow lesions associated with abnormal shunting between arteries and veins, while VMs and LMs are low-flow malformations characterized by dilated venous or lymphatic channels. Current therapeutic options are limited, which often results in mental health issues and diminished quality of life, particularly in younger patients. Sclerotherapy with ethanol-based agents is an effective minimally

Possible Role of the RORC Gene in Primary and Secondary Lymphedema: Review of the Literature and Genetic Study of Two Rare Causative Variants.

Background: RAR-related Orphan Receptor C (RORC) is a DNA-binding transcription factor and the key transcription factor responsible for differentiation of T helper 17 cells. The RORC gene plays a role in lymphoid organogenesis, thymopoiesis, and lymph node organogenesis. The aim of our study was to determine the possible role of RORC in the development of lymphatic system malformations by combining data from the scientific literature and next-generation sequencing of RORC in lymphedema patients negative for known causative genes. Methods and Results: We sequenced RORC in 235 lymphedema patient

Successful treatment of large abdominal lymphatic malformations and chylous ascites with intra-abdominal lymphovenous anastomosis.

Large abdominal lymphatic malformations (LMs) are rare and may occasionally cause life-threatening illness, especially when they involve the central lymphatic system, lumbar trunks, cisterna chyli, thoracic duct, and their major tributaries, forming complex lymphatic anomalies. These LMs are often accompanied by chylous leak in various locations, and treatment remains challenging. We report a case of large abdominal LM with chylous ascites, protein-losing enteropathy, vaginal chylous leak, and lower limb lymphedema successfully treated with microsurgical intra-abdominal lymphovenous anastomosi
