OBJECTIVE: To compare the temporomandibular joint changes in adolescent Class II division 1 malocclusion patients with mandibular retrusion treated with Twin- block and Class II elastics.
METHODS: Sixty Class II division 1 malocclusion patients with mandibular retrusion were divided into 3 groups (Twin- block group, Class II elastic group and control group, 20 patients in each group) randomly. Differences of condylar process morphology were compared using cone- beam CT (CBCT) before and after treatment.
RESULTS: Condylar largest anteroposterior diameter and upper condylar height increased af

OBJECTIVE: To investigate maxillary and mandibular rotation type and characteristics in normal and II (1) malocclusion adolescents with different growth patterns.
METHODS: 158 cephalometric films of normal occlusion and 246 cephalometric films of II (1) malocclusion aged between 10 and 13 years old were selected. Linear regression method was used to analyze the correlation between facial height index and inclination of palatal plane, occlusal plane and mandibular plane in normal occlusion, and to establish floating norm diagram. Then maxillary and mandibular rotational types in normal occlusi

After more than a century of conjecture and heated argument, the orthodontic relevance of nasal obstruction and its assumed effect on facial growth continues to be debated. Oral respiration disrupts those muscle forces exerted by tongue, cheeks and lips upon the maxillary arch. The main characteristics of the respiratory obstruction syndrome are presence of hypertrophied tonsils or adenoids, mouth breathing, open-bite, cross-bite, excessive anterior face height, incompetent lip posture, excessive appearance of maxillary anterior teeth, narrow external nares, "V" shaped maxillary arch. The quantitative changes which occurred as the result of this specific regimen of treatment in a sample of Class II malocclusions in the early mixed dentition were compared with like changes in a closely matched sample of untreated Class II malocclusions. Selected parameters were also compared with a comparable group of Class II malocclusions treated with only a Kloehn cervical appliance. Treatment as described does tend to slightly increase the vertical eruption of the upper molar. No maxillary orthopedic effects were noted in the horizontal plane. There was significant inhibition of the forw

PURPOSE: This study investigated the position of the hyoid bone and its relationship with airway dimensions in different skeletal malocclusion classes using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: CBCT scans of 180 participants were categorized based on the A point-nasion-B point angle into class I, class II, and class III malocclusions. Eight linear and 2 angular hyoid parameters (H-C3, H-EB, H-PNS, H-Me, H-X, H-Y, H-[C3-Me], C3-Me, H-S-Ba, and H-N-S) were measured. A 3-dimensional airway model was designed to measure the minimum cross-sectional area, volume, and total a

Lower incisors axis has a "key" position in different cephalometric analysis. However, several critics are directed towards the cephalometric profile and cephalometric landmarks (point, line and angle). The published norms and the cephalometric standards recommended for the optimal positioning of incisors could only be used as general clinical guidelines. Incisor repositioning to achieve optimal facial aesthetics requires taking into consideration the hard and soft tissues of the face, the profile, the muscular dynamics as well as the facial growth. In this work, we propose a new approach of i

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of permanent tooth anomalies in patients attending the graduate orthodontic clinic at the State University of New York at Buffalo.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Charts of 496 subjects (310 females and 186 males) met the inclusion criteria for this study. The mean ages were 16 years and 3 months for the combined gender sample that received orthodontic treatment in the graduate orthodontic clinic between 2007 and 2010. Full pretreatment records (intraoral photographs, digital study models, lateral cephalograms and panoramic radiographs) were used for the assessme

INTRODUCTION: Miniscrew or microimplant-assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE) devices are used to achieve a skeletal expansion of the palate and to increase the arch perimeter.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the treatment of a 23-year-old woman with an Angle Class II, division 1 malocclusion with constricted maxillary and mandibular arches.
CASE REPORT: The patient's main complaint was mandibular anterior crowding. The treatment plan included expansion of the mandibular arch concurrent with maxillary expansion, using a MARPE appliance in combination with a full-fixed appliance to align and level

PORPOSE: To investigate the effect of Insignia system in customized orthodontic treatment.
METHODS: A total of 71 patients with malocclusion undergoing orthodontic treatment in Dalian Stomatological Hospital from March 2018 to August 2019 were enrolled, and divided into two groups according to random number table methods. Patients in non-customized group received Damon Q self-locking brackets, while patients in customized group received individualized brackets combined with Insignia appliance. The patients were revisited every 8 weeks in initial phase and thereafter every 6 weeks. The clinica

OBJECTIVES: To determine factors that could predict Class II/1 malocclusion patient compliance during functional treatment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 77 subjects (aged 11-13 years; 47% girls) presenting with Class II/1 malocclusion. Inclusion criteria were distal molar relationship, overjet greater than 5 mm, and confirmed pubertal growth spurt. Removable functional appliances (62% Twin Block [TB], 38% Sander Bite Jumping [BJ]) with built-in maxillary expansion screws were used. Follow-up period was 1 year. Patients and parents independently filled out the Child Perceptio

Aggressive periodontitis mostly affects young people, causing rapid destruction of periodontal tissue and loss of supporting alveolar bone. The destruction of periodontal tissue induces pathological tooth movement, resulting in various types of malocclusion such as crowding or spacing in the dentition. This report describes orthodontic treatment for malocclusion due to generalized aggressive periodontitis. The patient was a 31-year-old woman who presented with the chief complaint of displacement in the anterior teeth. An oral examination revealed pathological tooth mobility throughout the enti

INTRODUCTION: Moderate and severe bimaxillary protrusion impair the passive lip sealing and the facial and smile esthetics. The extraction of premolars can be avoided by the use of skeletal anchorage to retract both dental arches. This approach brings many advantages such as: prevents premolars extraction; simplifies orthodontic mechanics; there is no volume reduction of a premolar when smiling; control of overbite and gingival exposure. The utilization of this therapeutic approach, when associated with self-ligating brackets, can bring the possibility of spacing the appointments without damag

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the craniofacial characteristics of the Class II malocclusion patients with mouth-breating by posteroanterior cephalometry.
METHODS: To measure craniofacial width of the 12 Class II malocclusion patients with mouth-breathing, and to compared these measures with corresponding measures in a group of normal children.
RESULTS: The width of the maxillary base bone (J-J) was less than that in normal children significantly (P < 0.01). The mouth-breathing children's upper and lower arch width (at first molar and cuspid) were comparatively narrower, and lateronasal width (Lap-L

With an increase in the number of adults currently seeking orthodontic care, the orthodontist will invariably be faced with the planning and execution of treatment for nongrowing patients with significant skeletal discrepancies. Surgical orthodontic treatment may be the preferred mechanical choice in many of the cases, but may not fit the patient's financial or emotional capabilities. It is often incumbent upon the orthodontist to present alternative treatment options along with the risks and benefits inherent in the dentoalveolar compensation of a malocclusion which is predominantly skeletal.
