Value of a chicken-based formula for refeeding of children with protracted diarrhea and malnutrition in a developing country.

Two hospital-made, lactose-free, hypoosmolar formulas were compared for therapy for 61 children aged 10-28 months who had severe malnutrition and protracted diarrhea. The formulas were isocaloric and contained dextrin-maltose, carrots, sunflower oil, minerals, and vitamins. One had chicken meat as the protein source and the other had hydrolyzed lactalbumin (LAD). Initially the formulas were given as a continuous enteral feeding by nasogastric tube and pump. Six patients died from metabolic and infectious complications: four failed to equilibrate and changed diet. The remaining 51 were divided …

Short-Term Changes in Left and Right Ventricular Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Feature Tracking Strain Following Ferric Carboxymaltose in Patients With Heart Failure: A Substudy of the Myocardial-IRON Trial.

Background The mechanisms explaining the clinical benefits of ferric carboximaltose (FCM) in patients with heart failure, reduced or intermediate left ventricular ejection fraction, and iron deficiency remain not fully clarified. The Myocardial-IRON trial showed short-term cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) changes suggesting myocardial iron repletion following administration of FCM but failed to find a significant increase in left ventricular ejection fraction in the whole sample. Conversely, the strain assessment could evaluate more specifically subtle changes in contractility. In this subanal…

Ferric carboxymaltose in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension and iron deficiency: a long-term study.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a progressive disease with limited survival. Iron deficiency (ID) correlates with disease severity and mortality. While oral iron supplementation was shown to be insufficient in such patients, the potential impact of parenteral iron on clinical measures warrants further investigation. METHODS: We retrospectively analysed the long-term effects of intravenous ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) on iron status and clinical measures in patients with PAH and ID [ferritin < 100 μg/L or ferritin 100-300 μg/L and transferrin saturation (TSAT) < 20%] who we…

Stability of low concentrations of guanine-based antivirals in sucrose or maltitol solutions.

Three guanine-based antiviral drugs, entecavir, lobucavir, and acyclovir showed degradation in presence of sucrose in ready-to-use solutions held at 50 degrees C, with more degradation at pH 4 than at pH 6 or 7. LC/MS analysis of the solutions showed isomeric adducts of the drugs and reducing sugars. Sucrose, a disaccharide and a non-reducing sugar, was the source of monosaccharides, the reducing sugars. Sucrose showed pH-dependent hydrolysis at 50 degrees C into two monosaccharides, fructose and glucose, with more sucrose hydrolyzing at pH 4 than pH 6 or 7. Additionally, the three drugs showe
